To those of you who spend the majority of your day on the computer, do you ever have back problems? Lately I've been having some problems with my lower back, but it's not really painful. It's just a noticeable feeling that something's wrong. How do you guys deal with back problems? Do you get up and stretch from time to time, or do you have a set number of hours that you dedicate to spending time on the computer?

I've been trying to watch more television just so these problems will go away. It's helped a little bit, but not much.

    Joshua, you should make sure that the ergonomics of your workplace is alright i.e. you must be able to work in a comfortable position at all times. You should also take breaks from time to time.

    It is now mandatory in many countries to make a risk assessment of a person working with computers and monitors to make sure that the ergonomics are correct. If you are as young as your avatar looks, you better be very careful. You shouldn't be getting back problems at thiat age.

  • Just get up more and strech! Make sure you site up straight in your chair. I hope that it gets better!

    Joshua - men aren't built like women and they suffer more when they sit too long. Women's center of gravity is in the hip area - men are centered at the shoulder area.
    If your back starts to get tired, lay on the floor and pull your knees up to your chest. Then just let yourself relax and imagine yourself melting into the floor. Once your back relaxes (a few minutes) - keep your shoulders straight on the floor and keep your knees even with your hips - twist so your knees touch the floor to one side - the twist the other direction.

    Of course it wouldn't hurt you any to get up and walk, dance, ANYTHING moving instead of watching tv.

      I got degenerative disk disease which led to spinal stenosus (sp) from sitting to long at the only desk job I ever had. That's what that lower back pain you're feeling now can lead to.

      Yeah, I started walking today. It's helped a lot (plus, the weather's no longer abhorrent so there's no excuse not to get out and do something).

      I think I can attribute most of this to a soccer injury in the 9th grade. If that's the case, I'll probably have to deal with this for the rest of my life.

        I feel your pain. Two torn disks in lower back L2 and L3. Try switching to a medicine ball and get rid of your desk chair. This will help strengthen your core and make it easier to sit.

          I used to have the same problem.

          What I did to improve and avoid the problem are:

          1. Bought an ergonomic chair that supports my back to give the correct posture
          2. Take a break every half to an hour like taking a drink from the fridge
          3. Every night taking the waist tonic that is sold in supermarket
          4. Take 5 mins to do exercise relating to my lower back (strengthen the back muscle)

          So far it has been more than 3 years, no complain about back pain.

    I use a mesh lumbar supporter that slips over the back of my office chair. It works wonders. My back does not hurt when I am sitting at my desk any more. I fell down the stairs twice on some unsecured runners. You can get some ease in the pain by taking hot showers and doing some stretches. There are some lumbar stretch videos on the Expert Village.com website. Just type in lumbar stretches. Hope that helps.
