This is everything that's wrong with music today all wrapped up in one short, half-time show.
Seriously, are there really people who like this shit?

I wasn't impressed with it at all, myself.

I thought Beyonce did a fine job. I'm not a fan of her's and can't name a single one of her songs. But I think she has a great voice and put on a fantastic show. I thought it was much better than watching Bruce Springsteen "crotch-slide" into the camera.

The one thing that bothers me about these shows are the fake fans around the stage.

I think "put on a fantastic show" is the definitive phrase.
The show is an excuse for the music.
      The music is secondary.
Sure, she has a good voice but it's what she does with it that's shit.

It's supposed to be a show, not a concert. And it needs to appeal to a wide audience. There's now more women that watch the Superbowl than watch Miss America. And people from 6-80 years old.

I do agree that I'd really like to hear Beyonce belt out some old blues classics, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate her voice.

          That's the whole point Kurt.
When first started I was surprised. She was starting to wail on some blues then stopped and turned it into an over the top super Vegas glamour and glitz fest.
The SHOW made her voice moot.

You won't change my mind and I won't change your's.

However, as a marketer on a marketing forum, the point really should be, did the halftime show make money for NBC and the NFL? The numbers will tell the real story.

BTW, those Vegas "glamor and glitz" shows make hundreds of millions of dollars, not counting their ability to draw the women while the husbands gamble.

And finally, as a true sports fan the halftime barely matters to me.

I know this wasn't posted for me,but right here you hit the nail on the head:
              BINGO!
Neither of us can prove it,but I feel that the game itself is what makes the money for NBC and the NFL.

If you are going to have a singer, but her onstage with her voice and some musicians. I don't want to see a show,I want to see talent.
But if I have to see a show, I don''t want it to be something I feel I need to censor for my kids.

NEWSFLASH: You don't "HAVE TO" see the show. If you don't like it, change the channel. They have things now-a-days called "remote controls". You don't even have to walk all the way across the room to change the channel. Just press a little button and you're all set.

The Puppy Bowl has been on the whole time. I'm sure your kids would like it, I do too.

Yes Kurt, that is pretty much word for word the reaction I expected from you.

Of course part of it is my mistake because if I want to watch the Superbowl without missing any of it,I DO have to mostly see the "show within a show" if that is what you want to consider it.

But whether I want to watch it or not, or if I never watch it, that doesn't change that the OP is right.

Other than that I agree with your statement that it isn't suppose to be a concert.

I edited to add the bold just for effect.

          And Kim,

I knew you were going to bitch and moan about the halftime show before you ever posted. So I guess we're both psychic.

No, the OP isn't "right or wrong". It's an opinion and a matter of personal taste. There's no right or wrong about it. I don't like much of the music either of you two post, but that doesn't mean the music is "bad".

            Actually you didn't,because I wasn't going to,and didn't, I just commented on and with someone else's OP.

As far as our musical tastes, that's fine I like some of yours and I don't like some of yours. Different strokes for different folks.

I say it all the time,if we all liked and agreed on everything what a boring place this would be. At the end of the night both of us are going to bed and not worry about each others opinions.

After all, sharing the same birthday makes us both cantankerous anyways.

I agree, although I admit I didn't even watch the halftime show. They've sucked for years, IMO, so I channel flip. Today I watched Impractical Jokers during halftime.

I still catch a few bits of the halftime show as I check back to see if the second half has started. The only drawback to that is sometimes you miss a little action. Today I missed the Ravens returning the kickoff for a touchdown, but got there in time to see the replays. Oh well.

Seems like a few years ago (not that many) a songwriter wrote a SONG - lyrics and all. Now so many of the more popular tunes appear to be someone writing one sentence....and the artist singing that one phrase over and over and calling it a "song".

I guess we're in the age of repetitive music but it's sort of boring for me.

First, I guaren-damn-tee you CBS SURE AS HELL chose the talent.
      Current, yes.
      Relevant, no.
But, you are right about one thing. And it's the most disturbing thing of all.
"It" is what is "It" at the moment. So, what you're saying is, quality is not an issue. It's what is "it" that matters.
I referenced that in an earlier post.

FALSE! CBS did NOT choose the talent.
Since the Janet Jackson wardrobe debacle, the NFL tells the network who the LEAGUe
Has hired for the show. I heard an interview with CBS chair Les Moonvest
        stating that fact.
It is indeed relevant to current pop culture, Every 20 and 30 somethings I spoke to about it thought it was great. So quality is in the eye of the beholder.
How can you make the assumption that the " majority" are not free thinkers?
I think it was a successful presentation to their TARGET market,
Which is males 18-40, who have the most discretionary income.
I personally thought it was soft core porn, and she is a mediocre singer at best.
If I had young kids in the house, I would have changed the channel or sent them out of the room, BEFORE the show started, Knowing Beyonces M.O.

Yes, Beyonce is not a great singer.
Yes, It was like a strippers show.
But it is what is "it" at the moment.
And CBS did NOT choose the talent, the league did.

I thought it was a great game, and even though CBS is my least
Liked football crew, they did just fine
Actually Madonna's performance is one of the top 10 performances according to billboard. And practically all of the top 10 Super Bowl performances of all time according to billboard were performed by people and bands decades out of their prime. The number one spot held by Prince - 2 decades after his biggest hit. So it doesn't have to be an "it" at the moment to be entertaining and widely popular. Actually it's usually quite the contrary.

I'm willing to stake money on this one being considered one of the worst Super Bowl half time performances ever.

Sometimes you have to go against the grain.Just because some people enjoy trash doesn't mean you have to sit back and stay silent.
And you basically hit my biggest objection here:
"Yes, It was like a strippers show."
    You call that relevant?
It is a real sad world we are in if people think that way.
I am used to mediocre talent, that's mostly all that is out there these days, but even though all my kids are grown,my grandchildren aren't,and I personally found her "show" disgusting.
I speak for myself,no one else.
As far as they game itself, it was a great game, and I usually don't watch them.

@ Dennis- Relevant to what is popular now. And the majority of the audience are NOT football fans.
@ Kim- Have you watched TV lately? That was tame compared to many. This is the time we live in. Sure, It would be nice if the world had some discretion left. The desensitizing of society goes far beyond the super bowl. Nor is it the responsibility of the NFL, CBS or any other network or entity to make YOUR personal choice. They are in business, providing content and selling advertising. Even if it is perceived by some to be offensive.

You must miss a lot of my posts Big Rob.

I am always ranting about the trash on tv.
I am always ranting about the dumbing down of America.
Some people think I am always ranting, period.
Problem is I actually care about America

No one is asking to make MY choice, I am asking that society go back to actually having some ethics, morals and integrity.
I know that is asking for miracles, but all it takes is one person at a time.

Note: I also understand that if society did not watch this crap and clamor for more the stations would not be feeding the public crap.

I think several of us are saying the same thing.
Bottom line for me is that I posted that I basically agree with the original poster, lcombs, that the half time show was not talent.
You think it is, more power to you.
