Freshly studied documents on Canada's disgraced Indian residential school system suggest more than 3,000 children died while in the imposed care of such facilities, stamping a harsh number on the cost of an often overlooked smudge on Canada's history.

You are absolutely correct: it was an extremely disgraceful and discriminatory program perpetrated by a partnership between certain church denominations and the Canadian government. The goal was to strip the native population of their heritage.

Many of those innocent children were literally dragged away from their families, and the parents and family members had no say in the matter. I have talked to a few of the victims, or heard their stories, and their experiences were horrifying, to say the least.

  • I would imagine similar programs in the States produced the same results and 'successes'.

There's no doubt that the "white man" and the gov did less than honorable things to the "red man" and not just the children.

And before anyone accuses me of being racist, don't. The blood that flows through my veins is comprised of both.

We had something similar happen in Australia. Thousands of children were stolen from their families and rehoused in white families. The stated intention was to give them a better start in life being brought up in a "civilised" environment. The real intention was genocide by stealth. To try and breed the aboriginality out of them.

Sadly, many of them were abused, physically, sexually and mentally.

One of the first acts of the new (at the time - 2008) Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, was to make a formal apology to the "stolen generation".

I hope the Canadian Prime Minister has it in him to do something similar.

Wonder who will be apologizing in the future for what is going on with American kids right now. The only thing the leaders here have learned is how to be just as corrupt, and more so, than other govs in the past.

It happens everywhere, wherever there is zealotry and/or conquest involved. I'd go so far as to say the 'tribe' mentality is human nature, like it or not. If you're not a member of the tribe in power, then you'd better do your best to hide under a rock, because they are coming to get you, somehow.

I've often struggled with this question. It looks to me like human nature can be compared to a river. In a river currents often flow in different directions.

I'm descended from peoples who were at war with each other (maybe that is why I sometimes feel like I'm at war with myself).
