I like to believe those who succeed in I.M. employ an ample amount of... automation, so he's really no different, with the exception he quit... probably from boredom!

I'm sure this happens a lot. Heck, I was at one job where a few people asked me for some reports, to be pieced together through ADHOC SQL. LONG, BORING, POSSIBLE ERRORS, ETC.... By the third request I decided to standardize it, and add new data they MIGHT want. Eventually I was asked to add a few things, and I said it is on the %^& TAB, and has been for WEEKS! When I left, that was one thing they specifically asked to be told about. It may be running even today, a couple years later.

Of course, technically, that is my job, but they pigeon holed me into another niche.

On y last job, I created several programs that did the same. Luckily I'm not tied to any discipline, O/S, or technology, so it is likely I won't be affected THAT much in the end.

Outsourcing does the same thing - but can be a headache in its own right.
