Best optical illusion ever?

I don't find most optical illusions all that impressive, but this is just crazy. The squares marked "A" and "B" in the image below are the exact same color. Don't believe me? Open up the image in any image editing program and use the "color eyedropper" tool and see for yourself.

Now be honest... did you think "there's no effing way that could be true", before you went and verified it for yourself? I dang sure did!

(And just in case the mods are wondering, this image is licensed to be freely reprinted, as noted here).

This is old, but wonderful. Really tricks the eyes.

I can normally understand the illusion when i see it.

This one I don't, does anybody know how it actually works
( as in why the illusion is present )

With the darker and lighter squares around the "supposedly" different coloured squares trick the eyes.

When the colour is classed as light, the darker colours around it are darker.

In this case, it's the presence of the shadow that makes this trick so believeable, as the shadow is able to significantly darken the dark squares to make the middle one "light" without our eyes saying "hey, you cheated!" because shadows are real and expected in our every day perception.

I'm typing this before I see what Kanigan found. probably video editing alone. But using twins is how this would be done live.

And the people in the video are part of it.

That's better than a guess. Now I'll see what Kanigan found.

Later; Like I thought. Smart inventive college kids.

The show Brain Games on the National Geographic Channel shows a lot of this.
The part that amazes me the most is that the brain is tricked even when we know exactly what is going on.

For example, they will show someone making the sound "B" over and over again, and then they change the video to someone saying the "B" sound.....but the audio is now playing the "P" sound!
If you look away, you'll hear "P"....if you look back, you'll hear "B". Your eyes will literally tell your brain what to hear. It's sooooo weird.

Ken; Missmystery explained it well, and if you can look at the "B" square, and ignore the surrounding area (very hard to do. I can only do it for a second or two), you'll see the "B" square get lots darker. I love this kind of stuff.
