  He's the first costumed Super Hero with superhuman abilities (The Phantom is the first costumed hero).
  
  He has the most developed Mythos.
  
  The publishers decided to kill him off years ago. It made national news. I mean in the real world. It made headlines. The story of how he returned to life lasted a year, and crossed 5 main comic titles (all about Superman) and several other related titles. It was a marketing coup.
  
  The Superman "S" Insignia is the second most recognized symbol in the world (The Christian Cross is the first)
  
  More comic books every month include the character than any other comic book character. (Batman is a close second)
  
  Superman is the most powerful of all the Superheroes, in any form. Martian Manhunter may be close.
  
  The Man Of Steel Movie is going to be Epic. I just read a complete story review...scene by scene...and it will blow you away. (Don't ask me how I got it).
  
  The name Superman is so recognized worldwide that the comic is translated in nearly every language.

I'm not so sure about that. Have you seen the detail in the Batman backstory? "The Death of Superman" sequence, by the way, was around the same time as "The Breaking of the Bat," which was similarly long and convoluted.

I will point out that, in "The Dark Knight Returns," the Batman kicked Supes' butt.

Superman has more recurring characters, that's where I got that about a more developed back story. You may be right, but Superman has been a more popular character longer than Batman (over the entire history of the characters). But not by much.

I'm a real Dark Knight Returns fan. I remember buying the graphic novel, and reading it twice that night....until 3:00 in the morning. Fantastic story telling. And I can remember much of the dialog. The sequel Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again was a disappointment though.

You said "I will point out that, in "The Dark Knight Returns," the Batman kicked Supes' butt."

May I remind you that this was a very weakened Superman....and Batman was wearing an exo-skeleton. Plus he had Robin and Green Arrow on his side. And something that was not in the graphic novel, Superman had been drinking that day and also had a cold coming on. So there!

Gosh! That p1sses me off when people wrongly state that Batman beat up Superman! Gosh!

By the way, did you see the animated version of The Dark Knight Returns? It was very faithful to the books,and I really enjoyed it.

And now let's talk about manly sports...and girls...and fast cars...you know...big boy stuff.

Claude, I'm not about to get into a fanboy dispute so I'm going to let most of this go. :rolleyes: However, don't let your DC preference cloud your judgment. Any discussion of backstories must include Spider-Man.

As for strength, Hulk and Thor are in the discussion, unless we're including just ridiculous characters such as The Beyonder, Galactus or The One-Above-All.

Dan...From one fan to another. I don't really have a DC preference. I love the idea of the Super Hero, and I used to collect comics. At one time I had Daredevil #4-169. I'm just excited about the movie. When Captain America came out? Iron Man? Thor? Same thing.

Superman has been out for far longer than Spiderman. Spiderman has almost always been a better seller (comic titles that is) than Superman. Spiderman has a great back story. And most of the Marvel characters are far more relatable than the DC heroes. But I've always had a love for the idea of Superman.

As far as power levels. They change with whomever is writing the book. Superman has gone from being able to leap an eighth of a mile to being able to push planets and travel through time. Then his powers were lessened...then increased.

Hulk and Thor are Awesome.....but these are all characters that depend on our imagination. Can you even imagine being able to lift a mountain? I can't. At his most powerful interpretation, Superman is probably the most powerful comic hero. But I give you that there are several heroes in the same class. My favorite "Godlike Marvel being"? The Over-Mind. Maybe The Stranger, maybe Galactus. I just enjoy the mythology.

If this were 1,000 years ago, we would be debating who was more powerful...Thor or Neptune.
And I would enjoy it just as much.

Thanos...just saying the name...makes me shudder in fear.

Dan; I knew you were having fun. You just can't read the snarky elitist geeky smirk I have on my face as I'm replying.

By the way.....My two favorite heroes really are Batman and Superman.

But it's because of what they are to me...

Batman is the epitome of what you can do with willpower and determination.

Superman is always a good guy. Always. He always does the right thing. He never takes the low road. He is pure in his desire to do good.
Even without Super Powers...I think he would be a hero.

He is Iconic. I think if we all suddenly had (through some magic) his abilities...there would still be very few people like this character.
There is something Majestic to me about Superman.

Anyway, I can't wait for the film. Today I got the soundtrack on CD. My patient angelic wife had to listen to it in the car as we drove around town tonight shopping. It's inspiring. Zack Snyder really knows how to do a Superhero movie. So I'm a little excited about this movie.

Oh. Wait. We don't hold fantasies of actually being the characters...

I enjoyed "The Dark Knight Strikes Again." Completely different sort of story and artwork, but it was a good read. And, like the recent movies, it was a true Dark Knight story. Not like the Adam West or Michael Keaton versions. They were fun, but they weren't the same. There's nothing "fun" about the Dark Knight.

If you want to talk about pure power, look at Dr Manhattan. Or Marvel's Jean Grey (in full Phoenix mode). Or Image's Supreme. Or Valiant's Solar. Or the green version of the Silver Surfer.

Or, or, or...

No, I haven't seen the animated DKR. I'll add that to my extensive list of "Things I should probably see." Mind you, it took me more than 2 years after buying "The Watchmen" before I actually watched it. If it had been an Aliens movie, it wouldn't have been two weeks...

That's one of the main appeals of The Dark Knight Returns. The idea that willpower is stronger than an aging body. That if you are obsessed, you can do anything. There are quotes from the book, that still give me chills just reading them.

Abdoue: The character Superman was originally (back in the late 1930's) able to leap buildings, was very strong, and fast. The reason he began to fly was when the animated features (far better than cartoons) were created, in the 1940's...it looked silly having Superman leap over and over again. It was easier to have him fly. The character in the comics followed suite. They kept adding abilities to Superman, until he became literally a godlike being. Then they created Kryptonite as a device to give him challenges. In every live movie (even the serials in 1948) he could fly.

If Wolverine & Superman were real? And they fought to the death? Superman would blast him with heat vision...and Wolverine would be ashes.

One of the writers of (I believe) Batman comics said that Batman is "The most dangerous man in the room. Even when Superman is in the room". I eat this stuff up.

When Batman was sending for Carrie Kelly as Robin, Alfred asks "What if she's doing something better?" Batman says "Nothing's better".

It's been 20 years since I read the book. This is from memory.

Paul; One of the things I enjoy about comics is when two mismatched heroes fight. Like The Hulk VS Daredevil. Or Captain America VS Thor. The fights have to seem reasonable, and they almost have to be a tie. And both heroes still have to be heroes.

Batman VS Superman in The Dark Knight Returns? Superman could have simply fried Batman with a blast of heat vision. Superman could move far faster than Batman could react to. I loved the story, and loved the battle at the end. Superman was trying to arrest Batman. But Batman was trying to hurt Superman. Superman was being very gentle with Batman. You should get the Animated DVD of this. It's almost as good as the comic series.
Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Batmen Year One....Three best comics in history, in my opinion. I haven't read most of the more recent Batman graphic novels

When I was a kid, I read a newspaper article about a pilot (I think) that some called Captain America. I thought it was real. I wanted so badly for it to be real. I was maybe 8 or 10 years old.

I'm a big Joseph Campbell fan. He talked a lot about heroic myths.
Adults that really like Super Heroes... I wonder what that says about us?

The Batman wasn't trying to hurt Superman in that story. He was trying to wake him up. And, as you saw at the funeral when Clark heard the heartbeat, he succeeded.

Superman had allowed his code of honor to be turned into the currency used to buy him out. The Batman showed him the way back.

I enjoy a good Superman story, but the writers usually push the honor and nobility of the character to the point of being simplistic. That's one variation of the hero myth that's popular, but it's always struck me as being the easy way out. People just aren't that simple.

They don't call the Batman the Dark Knight just because of his costume. He's driven by revenge, and his modus operandi is fear. He is a much more complex and flawed character than the caped Kryptonian. To me, that makes him much more interesting and believable.

I'm happy to suspend disbelief for the benefit of a good story, but pushing it too far always strikes me as escapism.

When some friends took me to see "The Dark Knight" for my birthday the year it came out, they were agog about the thing. They'd never experienced a story of the "real" Batman before. When they asked me what I liked most about the movie, I said, "Heath Ledger did something I didn't think would ever be done. He played the Joker from the stories, and still made him believable."

Darn you Paul! You made me dig out my graphic novel and reread the scene. You are right I was....Less Right.

I agree with everything you said. When Heath Ledger's Joker slammed that guy's head into that pencil.."Ta Da!" my heart skipped a beat. I thought "Wow! That's the Joker". To me, The Dark Knight was the perfect Batman movie. Heck, it would have been a fantastic James Bond movie.

Yeah, Superman stories tend to be simplistic. Have you read Kingdom Come?
If not, I know you would love it. That's a more complex Superman.
And the Alex Ross artwork is amazing.

Paul; I've given almost the same question some thought. Superman is more of a fantasy figure.
Most people see him and think "Wouldn't it be great to be able to fly like Superman". But most don't identify with his story.

And nobody (sane anyway) thinks that they could be him.

Batman is far more complex. He created himself. He became Batman.
Is he possible? Sort of. Maybe as possible as Iron Man.

But as a character, Batman is far more complicated and interesting that Superman.

I think (only based on reviews, reading the story, and watching the trailers) that the Man Of Steel movie tries to give Superman some depth, and makes a great science fiction story more than a super hero fantasy.

Oh, and I want to say publicly that I thought Superman Returns was a good movie. As good at the original Superman with Christopher Reeve. There! I said it.

  Yes, I have. And yes, it was.
  
  Remember the Elseworlds book in which the Kryptonian orphan was adopted by the Waynes and became the Batman? That was a really cool twist on the old story.
  
  Or the one in which Bruce became the Green Lantern? The title, "In Darkest Knight," was a fun play on the poem/oath Hal had to say in the old books, as he did his daily recharge of the ring.
  
  (Trivia question: Without Googling, can you remember that bit of dramatic doggerel?)
  
  Or how about Father Wayne in "Holy Terror?" That was a brilliant - and somewhat chilling - bit of story-telling. In its own way, it was as dark as "Night Cries."

Claude, I don't know if you're a drinking man, but we should get together for some beers. I have an entire universe of characters in my head that all tie around a common theme. My wife nags me that I should put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). I'd love to get your opinion.

Ya know, something just occurred to me. I have no idea if it's got any real merit, as I haven't given it a lot of thought, and it's a ridiculous oversimplification. Still, it's interesting enough that I may spend some time mulling it over later.

Becoming the Batman would require massive dedication, hard work, and single-minded focus, but he is possible. That's something Bat-fans have always acknowledged.

I wonder if it's likely that some of the folks who prefer Superman choose him because they know they cannot become him, so there's no expectation they try?

Looked at another way... Superman's power is the result of accidents of birth and circumstance. The Batman is a creature of choice, fueled by willpower.

As I said, a gross oversimplification. Still... Interesting.

Now I haven't seen the film. But those must be made out of kryptonite or somethink because I can't really see the point in that.. LOL

Just saw it...

Wow...WOW! Near perfect. Certainly the best Superman movie so far (and I've seen all of then a dozen times or more).

A couple things I didn't like...but that may come later. No spoilers.

I'll see it again tomorrow. Not a kid's movie.

Very little humor. I'd compare it to Avatar.

I saw it in 2D. I don't think 3D will make much difference.

There is a new Superman in town.

  Yea, I'm ruined as far as 3D goes.
  
  When Star Trek came out, I caught it in regular 2D. The theater didn't have a 3D screen. The next weekend I saw it in 3D and it was an order of magnitude better!
  
  So, unless you don't want to start a more expensive movie going lifestyle, I can highly recommend 3D.

I saw it again Sunday. About every 15 minutes is a sequence that grabs you and shakes you. The movie is an awesome spectacle.

They took Superman from a fantasy character to a science fiction character.

Perfect casting in all parts.

Most of the audience sat through all the credits.....coming down.

The movie broke that all time June opening weekend record for ticket sales.

Movie was so so. It was more action than explaining who the characters actually were.

I may be crazy, but I liked Superman Returns a bit better.

However, this origin story was great, and explained everything great.

Superman Returns (in my opinion) was a good movie. But it was very much like the first two, with Christopher Reeve. Most of the movie was about the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane. It was almost a "Chick Flick".

Man Of Steel? It was written for most Superman fans, young guys.

It was a 2 hour and 23 minute assault on your senses. It appealed to males far more than Superman Returns.

But I thought both were great movies. Of all of the Superman movies, I thought this one was the best. They took Superman from a fantasy story to a science fiction story.

They have already started working on the second one.

I saw a model years ago in a Supergirl costume. It was the hottest thing I saw up to that point. My wife wouldn't go for it, unfortunately.

I saw Promotheus in 3d and I taught it was gimmicky. I didn't think it added much to the movie.

I wear glasses so it was very awkward to have two pairs and my head started to hurt every 15-20 minutes.

OK, Boys and Girls!

I just saw Man Of Steel for the third time today. And this time in 3D.

The beginning of the movie (on Krypton) benefited greatly from the 3D. But I didn't see a huge difference between the two versions after that.

The movie wasn't originally filmed in 3D and most of the action sequences don't really lend themselves to a 3D experience.

I've seen dozens of movies in 3D. This is the first time, I didn't immediately see the benefit.

I honestly think its because the action is sooo violent, and the motions so sudden, your eyes (at least mine) didn't register a different perspective most of the time.

Yes, I saw Man Of Steel three times this week. I'm 7 years old. :rolleyes:

Caught it over the last week--the action is fantastic! They really ramped it up this time and showed what Superman was capable of. The flying scenes...wow. Just chills. Also: Henry Cavill is miles away from Brandon Routh; there's no doubt about it. That body is what the Man of Steel has always needed to look like \m/.

(Potential spoiler): What did you guys think of the ending though? Thought it wasn't very well handled, for the impact that it had to the Superman code...cutting from that scene to some cheap joke about how hot he was felt very lame to me.

Watched World War Z today with my wife.

This isn't a joke.

As we were walking into the theater (after an hour drive), I mentioned "I wonder if Brad Pitt has been in a zombie movie before?"

My wife looks at me in horror and says "You mean this is a Zombie movie"?

She thought it was a movie about the last world war...you know..... "World War Z".

A few times during the previews, I started laughing. That was why. And every time she would feel my body start laughing...she would punch me in the arm. It was a great day.

Movie had some good lines, and great effects (at least I thought), but it didn't compare to Man Of Steel. At least in my humble opinion.

Oh, by the way, tell your wife not to feel too bad because I thought the exact same thing as it being the end of the world movie. Seeing it has been on my list but I just haven't made it there yet.

  But the novelization of the movie is very good. There are several scenes in the book that aren't in the movie. A few point in the movie, that I thought didn't make sense...did, after reading the novel.

I'm glad to hear a positive opinion about the 3D. The last few movies I've seen in 3D were big disappointments and I'd pretty much given up on them. I'll give it one more shot and go see "Man of Steel". Superman is still my favorite superhero. I probably read every Superman comic book printed from about 1964 through 67 or so. I remember collecting from my paper route customers and running to the drugstore to get the latest issue! I think they were 15 cents per copy then and I was making around fifteen bucks a week delivering papers. I was one rich kid!

I remember when comics were 12 cents each. I would walk a few miles to the grocery store, gathering pop bottles along the way. I would end up with maybe $2 in returnable bottles. I'd buy a stack of comic books, a bottle (no cans in those days) of pop and maybe a cigar (big stuff for a 13 year old kid)

I would walk to a park in town, and spend a few hours reading. Nice way to spend the Summers.

I did that too before I got my first paper route at the age of 12. When the one next to mine came available, I took it on too. I sold tomatoes that I raised myself in our garden door-to-door at 6 or 7 years old. A few years after that I went fishing and then sold the fish. Most years I sold my Halloween candy. I guess you could say I've been self-employed at something for over 50 years. When a kid today tells me there's no way to make money until you're 16 I just laugh and then give them a long list of things they could do.

I thought there were some outstanding things in Man Of Steel, such as character development...loved the childhood flash backs , plot, visuals. There are also things I didn't like so much... The fight scenes between Superman and the other Kryptonians... Started to look like the same thing over and over...like the same three basic effects were used over and over...punch a guy so hard he flies through 3 buildings...run supersonic speed into guy and busts through 3 buildings....fight guy in mid air bodies crash land into pavement, pavement scrunched up and breaks apart.

Then there was a lot of space stuff...technology being used that was hard to identify with or logically conclude what it was or why it worked.

And I thought Zods death scene was dumb as hell. I expected something more clever...like maybe the thing with his cells gave him some advantage or something.with all the previous fighting he and the Krypts did... The final blow was just too easy. I have no problem with superman killing someone...he had no choice in that last moment.

Overall I felt I got my monies worth of entertainment. It is a good movie....just fell short of what it could have been if they hadn't got lazy with a few things.

Watched this a couple nights ago.

Very much an "assault on the senses" as Claude shared. Overall I liked it.

The beginning was a bit jarring with the smash cuts from present to past scenes. I often wondered what was going on. No problem with non-linear plots, I watched Sin City a million times, but these scenes tended to play out too fast.

No one will ever beat Marlon Brando's monologue as Jor-El. However, I enjoyed Russel Crowe in the role.

Anyone, absolutely anyone, could have played Zod. I still don't understand his motivation. The gene thing was just too abstract for me. It didn't make me care about it.

Interesting thing about the "bug" spaceships of Krypton...I kept thinking of the movie Dune. Lots of black, strange steps, people in weird costumes.

The violence did get quite repetitious, although I didn't get bored of it the way I did with Star Trek: Into Darkness's final scenes.

The first Superman was the first movie I remember watching, on a rental Beta VCR when I was 6. Yes, you could rent VCRs back in the day. It was at someone's birthday party in 1980. So this new version won't be dislodging Reeve's. But I did enjoy it.

I think they selected good actors for Zod, Jor-El, and Johnathan Kent. I'm a huge Michael Shannon fan, but yeah, anyone could have probably played Zod. Everyone else was, "eh" - including Superman. Had the body for it, but he looked confused 90% of the time. I would have rather watched his childhood first, got that out of the way, then enjoyed watching Superman be Superman. Instead I feel like your watching a super human do a couple good things, but he did them as Clark Kent instead of doing good things as "Superman."

Personally I don't really like Superman. I started reading DC comics in the early 90's so maybe thats why. I really like Lex Luthor as a character, and if Cranston or Rosenbaum pick up the role for Lex I'll be sold.

LOL in a group interview I got asked what superhero I'd be. I'm a bald business guy so I said actually a supervillain, Lex Luthor. Got the job.
