HI all,

I have been using a zip file to zip and unzip material when needed.
It seems to have been deleted form my pc somehow and I don't recall what the name was.

I need a FREE program that can zip and unzip files. It should have the option to create a zip file by simply right clicking on my desktop.

I have Googled and tried a few but they all seem complex and none have this feature which makes it simple.

I am sure somebody will have the answer so I thank you in advance.

7-Zip's good for unzipping. But for creating a zip I use the Windows facility: right click - send to - compressed folder.

    HI Lyn,

I tried that one and it doesn't give me what I had with the other one I was using. I also tried winzip but that isn't free. I tried jzip and also justzipit.

Just curious what you're trying to do that 7-zip can't accomplish? It's one of the most full-featured zip utilities out there.

I have been using WinRAR for at least 10 years and it works perfect! There is a free trial version, but I don't know what are the limitations!

Winzip isn't free but worth the money (Disclaimer) I do not know the current price,I purchased over a decade ago,For years the upgrades were free but they did start charging for them in the 2000s.I think the last time I paid and upgraded was around 2004/5.
    Program still works great.

Winrar is only for specific types of zip files. I have that one.

Thanks Kim. I will try out your selection and see how I go.

What type is that? I've used WinRAR for all sorts of zip, rar, gzip, etc. files. I've never come across a package that it couldn't unpack.

I use WinZip too, however, what operating system do you use? You might be able to go back to a restore point and get your program back.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Try doing a system restore on your computer back to a time the utility was there.

If it's win7 use the default zip.

Right click the folder you want to zip > Send to > Compressed zipped folder
    Done.

The program I had before was easy. I simply right clicked on my desktop and chose to create a zip file. Then I could drag and drop anything I wanted into it. Now that function has gone, along with whatever program I had.
All the programs I look at now seem to have a different way to do it and, as I am not very technically minded, it is confusing the hell out of me.

I did try a system restore and it says it failed. IF I try to go to an even earlier point, it says it will delete a ton of programs so I am concerned about doing that even though I also created a current point today to cover myself.

I don't know if I am even making sense to anyone.

I think I have got it sorted out finally....it is still very strange and not the way I was doing it but it seems to be working so thank you all for your suggestions. I knew this was the place to come to for help. I guess at 5am it is not a good idea to be using my brain.

Laurence, it's rare I ever have to use a zip or unzip utility at all. I keep a bunch of empty zip folders (I name them ready1, 2, etc.) and when I need to zip something I just copy the files into the empty folder and rename it. Same thing when opening one. Just double click and the file within is right there. I occasionally get one that's stubborn and doesn't want to cooperate and then I use 7-zip, which allows you to open or compress a half dozen or so different types of compressed files.

That sounds good travlinguy. I don't often need to zip things BUT my old file doesn't exist. I have accessed some that have been suggested and I think they will work so I will see what happens. My last task I had to email 10 docs as separate attachments.
