The US Has Been Dethroned

I heard on the news this morning that we no longer hold the number one spot for obesity in the world. This honor now belongs to Mexico.

Their percentage of obese citizens is 32 while ours is only 31.

So are we getting more health conscious or is Mexico becoming less health oriented?

What do you think?

    I don't know - I'm only a foreigner and I don't understand these things, but might it be some of the Americans slipping quietly across the border as illegal immigrants who have apparently made Mexico's relative proportion increase?

      Haha!

      I think it would be more likely that skinny Mexicans crossing our borders as illegal immigrants have apparently made our relative proportion decrease.

      Oh - no, no, no. Alexa -when they say "obesity", they aren't talking about a little chub. They are talking about knee snapping mounds of fat - resemblances to poorly clothed hippopotemuses. (hippopotimi?). Those people aren't "quietly slipping" ANYWHERE!

    At 31 percent I don't think we have gotten any more health conscious. Perhaps Mexico got a large influx of fast food restaurants lately.

According to Medical Daily, healthy diets are becoming less affordable, prompting individuals with low incomes to consume more unhealthy foods, such as fried foods and soda.

          On the local news tonight they cited people moving to urban areas and an increase of the middle class who can now afford to eat fast food and convenience foods.
          Also the report is based on 2008 data.
          Also on the news they noted that the US is down to 29th place for longevity. The blame was primarily on (in no particular order_ Heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes, and cancer. Also car and motorcycle accidents.
          Funny how they can come up with a cause(s) for cancer and eliminate or decrease those causes, like asbestos and smoking and cancer rates still go up.
          Funny also how they don't look at some of the chemicals in the foods we eat that are supplied by the mega corporations.

          Yes, I also read somewhere that providing siestas actually increases employee morale and productivity. If one is being more productive, they are working more and if they are working more, they are burning more calories.

          I'm not sure the makers of 5 hour energy would like it so much though, as a lot of their ads deal with getting rid of the 2 o'clock feeling. Having a siesta would surely do away with that feeling. I also wouldn't mind 5 Hour Energy being done away with either. :p

    Speaking as someone who formerly fit into that category, might I suggest that the proper way to frame this is that the size of (and opportunity in) the Spanish language weight loss niche has increased as well.

      Ha! That's great! Except I wasn't even aware that we disagreed on everything else.

      Yeah, the solution is far from an easy one. It is up to the people and if they wanted to change, they would have already, I think. And everyone knows it is much easier to put weight on than it is to take it off.

    this could be wildly optimistic on my part, but its a percentage increase measured against total poulation - i dont think there's much doubt that US would have the highest total number of obese 'individuals' ..?

    Actually Thomas Edison rarely, if ever, slept more than four hours at a time.
    He usually slept about 2 hours four or five times a day.
