Getting old sucks

I decided that i needed to get back in the gym. So i found a gym by me, signed up and hit it this morning..5:30am.

I forgot how old I am. I went in there slinging weights like I did 2 decades ago. Yeah, im going to pay for that in the morning.

    LOL - and you told ME to get out more? Hahahahahahahahaha.

    Gyms suck - come on out and climb around some Mt. canyons tomorrow with me if you are looking for a REAL workout. I could use someone to help carry out my agates and crystals. Carrying a pack of gemstones the better part of your weight up a 130 degree canyon wall can keep you quite fit, ya know - even at MY age. LOL. Beats sucking in gym air and developing show muscles.

      Cripes Audrey - If I could get there you wouldn't have to come here. I'd kill to be able to hunt those Aussie black opals. A change of snake breeds hissing at me might just be a bit exciting, too. LOL - now that makes for some good reflex tests no matter what age you are, eh? Hahahahaha.

      Open terrain has so much more to offer than a gym - and all it costs is the price to get there - out here I have mountain trails a mile down the road if I want to walk to the climb. It's fun to watch newbie climbers. They always go just a tad too far up thinking that downhill will be a piece of cake. But when the angle of that hill is steep enough (130 degrees is not a joke - or the extreme here) the climb down takes their knees out from under them almost every time. It's always an ego rush to have to stop and wait while the youngin's get their acts back together to keep going. And it's kewl to see that there's no belly fat, too - a sure sign of physical infirmity. Then there's the parts that have nothing to do with ego or getting fit - just the enjoyment of nature, the land, the peace, the adventure, the fresh air, finding incredible gemstones, caves, grottos, hot springs........

        That is no joke about climbing be a workout. I can remember hunting on my grandfathers farm when I was 12 or 13 years old... and there was a ton of knob climbing to do to get to my deer stand. What a workout... especially with all the layers of clothing on 3 pairs of long underwear, jeans, sweater, and 2 pairs of cover alls. It was like being the abominable snowman.

        But you are so right... being out in nature like that is one amazing experience. It makes you really appreciate just how beautiful this planet is and how lucky we are to be able to live in it.

    I've never understood why people will pay for good money to use a gym.
    Why pay to use a machine so you can go for a walk, a jog or a run?
    Why pay to use a block for 'step' exercises when you can do the same with a tree stump while on your walk, jog or run?
    Why convince yourself that actions (like bench presses) that you will never do in your day to day existence are worth paying for - even if you only do a few minutes every other day?
    I could go on but it amuses me to watch the performances at our local gym - fortunately most people my age have grown up disgracefully and simply don't care any more. We've seen it all!
    In my lifetime I am prepared to believe that many things that are claimed to enhance your life have, at some time, been exposed as life threatening - and vice versa.

    Look at smoking - remember when that was 'healthy' and good for your lungs and nasal passages?

      I'm in my early fifties, had some major health issues a few years ago and some arthitis issues now. You are right. I don't do bench presses in my day to day existence.

      I do put my dock in the and out of the water, hold back a rototiller, help my neighbor put in his boat hoist and alot of other day-to-day chores that require lifting, bending and crouching.

      I do a core workout of bench presses, squats, deadlifts and pullups.

      This allows me to continue to do the daily chores and maintainence that is sometimes required of me, including helping my 81 yr old Father with maintaining his place(and believe me, he always has strenuous projects for me).

      Always good to know I am entertaining the other people in the gym, including the 20 somethings who can't do most of the exercises I do.

      The down side is, I'm the first person asked when anyone needs something moved.

    I dont really have a choice but to go to a gym. I dont live in the boondocks, florida has no real hills. Walking? Yeah, there is a traffic jam in my apartment complex's parking lot, do you think the street will be much better? I live next to a fairly busy road, there are flowered crosses all up and down that road in the medium. They arent there just for decoration.

    I work in an office and get off just in time to work on my sites and maybe take a shower before bed. The gym is much more efficient.

    I can still move the same amount of weight, just not as many times and i damn sure dont remember being this sore when i was 20 and doing this after a long night of partying
