This is an "upgrade?" (iPad blues)

Updated to iOS 7 for the iPad today.

I'm sure there are some useful changes to the internals of the OS, but what they did to the interface is obnoxious. It WAS beautiful. Now it is so dumbed down it looks like a cartoon drawn by a 4th grader. A not-particularly-talented 4th grader at that.

Why do they have to take such a useful piece of tech and make it look like something out of a children's book? Are there that many simple-minded people using them?

WOW, I was wondering when people would start complaining! It didn't take long! Rush limbaugh mentioned that and didn't seem to care, but I thought of all the times they did that to windows, YIKES!

When my mother got alzheimers, it seemed that she depended more on the visual functions than other things. SO, with programs, she used ICONS! EVEN if the icon were substantially similar, but different, she was STILL confused. Of course I learned the way the forms were structured. Changing the paths frustrated ME. With some things, the path seemed to change with EVERY release!

I don't know PRECISELY how the apple GUI was changed, only that it was changed noticeably. My mother, when she had alzheimers, and I NOW, are probably on two extremes of the average user. Maybe the companies should come up with a clue and, when they become popular, STICK TO TRADITION.

Because they change icons and paths, documentation also becomes more complex. I mean a simple task could go from 1 short page to 3-5 LARGE ones.

As for simple minded people? WHO KNOWS? Maybe they figure that since more kids are using them, they should make it look like a kids toy. Did you see the map feature they had earlier? Some of the pictures were HORRIBLE! I mean some streets looked like an atom bomb blew up the town, and they led into the ocean! LITERALLY! Look at these!

I'm reporting you Paul for breaking the #1 rule.

      You should know better.

Anyway, I thought everyone loves cartoons and you must have known I'm simple.

Oh sorry, you said simple minded.

In all fairness, I'm missing things from the old version but I'm giving myself a few weeks for it to grow on me.

Yep, l have been researching it for a project and eventhough the website carried on about how wonderful it was, l thought that the graphics sucked.

Seems like they cut back on appearance for more memory, for videos, etc?

Glad l am not in the Apple camp, would rather buy Samsung, unless they drop the ball and go the same way?

Agreed. I don't understand the whole "flat" design craze. It reminds me of the dull, "amateur" looking graphics from the Windows 95 - 98 era.

The glossy/3D style from previous iOS versions looks waaaaay nicer, IMO.

Edit: just out of curiosity, I typed "flat design is" into Google search to see what the autocomplete came up with. The resulting screenshot should give you a pretty good idea what the general public thinks about "flat" design!

Honestly, the icons for Workbench 1.0 (AmigaOS, circa 1985) were better than these. And seeing them overlaid on any decent background just emphasizes their ugliness.

Most of the other visual changes are minor annoyances, but the omission of everything after the root domain in the Safari location bar is an actual inconvenience at times. It's also potentially a threat, given that you can't hover over a link and see where it goes.

Hmmm, sounds like Apples first Vista OS, bound to happen eventually, especially when Steve Jobs passed away.

But in all fairness, l am doing flat designs for the iPhone series of phones, and eventhough l am in two minds about it it is a lot easier to draw than a photoelectric one.

But l have to admit l wouldn't try to do the icons, to much work!

No doubt some 25 year old marketing exec, had this great idea? I can hear him say, we need something new, or a design that poops, etc.

The sort of people that paint their kitchens some obnoxious color, because it is the latest fad, and 5 years later finally realize that it is horrible and doesn't work!

Or they might be going the Windows way of creating a great OS then a crap one, it must increase sales overall???

There are some useful changes but I don't like the graphics. I miss the old one. Everything looks flat to me. I don't know if it just takes getting used to but it's already been days since the upgrade and I'm still not liking the interface. At the end of the day though, I still prefer iOS over Android. :p

It might be because it's kids they are trying to addict to the application because that's where the money is and will stay as they get older. For fun, (and in keeping with my character responses) - you can look up US registered mind control patents/microwave, sonar, etc, also.

Copying Windows 8 flat design perhaps?

Anyway, I just bought a nice little Android phone for $59!
Why do people spend 12x times that on an iphone?

No clue. I wouldn't use an iPhone if you gave it to me. Love my iPads, though.

I got a Samsung Intercept a few years ago, and it does everything I want a phone to do. Voice and text messaging, voicemail, and music player. Everything else is bonus. And there's a lot of bonus. Including the ability to get cheap OEM batteries and use external power supplies that don't require proprietary cabling.

The only thing that has me thinking about a phone upgrade is the quality of the cameras in the newer stuff. Some of it (like in the latest LG models) is really nice.

BTW... If you want a solid backup battery for an Android phone, check out the Romoss units. Solid price/performance ratio. You can use them for an iPad or iPhone, too, if need be, and the Apple cables come with the units.

Hmmm... I wonder if I can use them to power my cameras? That would be seriously cool, and worth buying another of the midrange units all by itself.

Gotta check that out after I get the next issue ready.

      Paul

Edited to add: The Romoss units have a cool extra feature that will be handy for travel: A built-in LED flashlight which is quite bright enough for most situations where you'd need one.

      Andrew,

The Romoss 5200 mAh unit online was cheaper than the 2000 mAh myCharge battery locally, if memory serves. The 10400 mAh Romoss is under $40 at Amazon. For comparison, the OEM battery for my phone is 1500 mAh. So, the Romoss 10400 is good for 2 to 4 weeks, with proper conservation.

Cheap connectivity insurance, to be sure.

I'm planning a few road trips for this winter, so portable power is something I'm looking into.

I'm playing with the idea of mounting two GeekSquad UPS units in the trunk, and figuring out how to run an inverter to them to charge them while driving.

If I find a campground or piece of scenery I like, I want to be able to stay there for a week or two without needing to run off to charge the gadgets to get work done.

Three days in and I'm not liking what I see. My Iphone 5 already had a hard time getting through the day (battery wise) and now I can hardly make it to 5pm. I don't use it that much during work, deactivated all notifications (which I would like to have) localisation, wifi and all that extra crap, I also close all my apps (which now take much longer to do) and am still waiting on the advantages of the updates to hit me in the face.
