Are Canadians nicer than Brits and Aussies?

They say Canadians are really nice. Are they nicer than Brits and Aussies?

Bonus: Did Canada invent hockey so they could fight and get out their agressions from being so nice?

    No, that is a myth. What does nice even mean? Polite and smiley? If so, it it is still cold like the sun shining bright on a winter day.

    Are Canadians nicer than Brits and Aussies? Pure nonsense.

    Street artists I know prefer to set up shop in the United States over Canada because Americans are friendlier to them, more respectful, and buy more things from them.

      Street artists I know prefer to set up shop in the United States over Canada because Americans are friendlier to them, more respectful, and buy more things from them.

      No real surprise considering most of their city's are below ground, spending a good part of the year in freezing cold and snow, with the odd, bear to tear off your limbs if you don't hand over the Big Mack, would make anyone grumpy?


      In Australia we only need to worry about the Kangaroo's having a go, which are taller than most humans. But thankfully we only see then at golf courses!

      At least we have some lethal clubs to clobber them with, it's the flesh eating wombats and especially the cute and cuddly Koalas, that are the real threat! He, he!

    We can be jerks like anyone, we just use common courtesy and common sense.

    Like hold the door so it doesn't shut in the face of the person behind you when entering a building.

    When you pass someone and you make eye contact, then give them the dignity and respect of acknowledging them with a simple head nod or greeting.

    If two people show up at a 2-4 way stop at the same time, wave the other to go first.

    Simple stuff like this is very common (where I live anyways) and it is more unusual to not see it happen.

    I find things like this give the appearance of being nice or friendly to those who visit or see us in their countries.

    I see people do these things in the US, but it is not the norm from what I see.

    So I assume this is why people think it's so nice and friendly here.

      Behavior in big cities is different than in smaller cities, towns, and countryside. Here in Vancouver, usually when someone is nice to me here out of the blue, it is to sell something, beg for money, or try to convert me.

    @TB, Vancouver has never been the friendliest of cities. I lived there in 1975-1976 and even then, the locals were very unfriendly to "eastern Canadians" so in 1977 I left and moved to Ontario and have been here ever since.

    I currently live in the Niagara region. The people here are friendly and warm - but I live in a smaller city - that really does make a difference, I think.

    It's probably the same in most countries, the bigger cities aren't as friendly as the smaller ones.

    I love Brits and Aussies - I love their humor and wit - and their lovely accents! and I don't think as Canadians we are any better or worse - just different

      Hey, I'm nice! Don't you Guys think so? lol. I'm a Pommy Girl (English) as my Australian Dad says. And he's nice too, so that covers Brits and Aussies. Hmm, I don't really know any Canadians, you Guys will have to say hello.

      But everyone should be nice, we all get further if we are nice to each other and help each other.

        This is the Off Topic forum. Theoretically such information could be applied to marketing. If people are less friendly in one region, maybe they'd be a better market for whips and crossbows, while folks in a friendly area might prefer roses and fluffy animal toys.

    That's the way I see the Aussies. I've met many and they are a light-hearted, fun loving bunch of people.

    I can't tell the difference between a Canadian and an American much other than the accent, to tell the truth. When I lived in MI before the border was closed down we used to go back and forth a lot.

    Brits tend to be stodgy and egocentric. They're polite and "orderly" when here just vacationing or site seeing, but when they decide to move in - YIKES. They seem to want the US to be just like Britain, and make a big stink about it whenever the chance arrives. To be fair, while I met most while they were vacationing on mainland EU, I've only known 3 of them over here - and ended up telling every one of them "if you want a place just like England - then go the hell home". LOL Also to be fair - they were all from major cities - and I think TB is right. People from large metropolises are just kind of hampered from the get go. I think the younger Brits are losing that formality edge and loosening up a bit, though, too.

      What an incredible generalisation from meeting 3 people you call "Brits". Were they English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh because by that definition you can't even have met every type of Brit.

      Actually, as someone that's lived here all my life, formality vanished in the sixties. Now it's just lawless.

      Well you're talking about 3 people so that's skewed anyway.

      I wouldn't want it to be like Britain and I'd never ever say that either. I wouldn't say it because I'd be a dickhead for moving there. So you actually met dickheads and there are Canadian, Aussie, English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh dickheads too.

      So I think it's safe to say you were unfortunate in the absolutely minuscule panel of "brits" you met and formulated an opinion of. It is not indicative of the other 70,000,000 or so, even if you do think they are.

      Please don't think you've remotely offended me either. I'm just saying what I thought having read your post.

      It's certainly not true of me anyway. There's no formality in using the word dickhead in a post and on the 3 trips I've had to your country, I loved it and I'd happily live there just as it is. So long as it doesn't become like London.

        My only experience with Brits is very different than Sal's.

        I met a group of twelve Brits while vacationing in Jamaica and on the Booze Cruise. They varied in age from in their sixties to their forties.

        OMGosh, talk about friendly, witty, and funny! They kept us cracking up the whole cruise and even invited us up to their room to continue our "festivities" when the boat docked.

        Based on my small sampling of Brits, I love 'em!

          Some of the friendliest people I've met were in Newfoundland - although I'm not sure the rest of Canada count them as Canadians.

          I've only spent a brief time in Vancouver, so I can't vouch for the character of the locals, but the breathtaking scenery on the drive up to Whistler would have been worth any rudeness.

          Where I live, I've got to know hundreds of people from a wide and diverse range of countries and cultures, and while I've noticed some particular national and cultural characteristics, ultimately people are people. We're all just looking for a connection. I've found if you're willing to be friendly, smile and engage them in conversation, most of the time you'll get a friendly response.

          But, as Richard points out, dickheads recognize no national boundaries.

    There are wonderful people and anal orifices in any group of people - and quite often the same person can qualify on both counts in the right circumstances.
