Toshiba Laptops are the most reliable, (l did a lot of online research before buying).

Toshiba Satellite, windows 7, (avoid 8 it is crap) i3, 4 gigs of RAM, 320 gigs HD.

Cost me about $600, but if you are doing high end game playing or graphics, then go up to at least i5!

Apple laptops are neat if you want the all-in user friendly package and are into some photo/video editing... However, the operating system in itself is quite closed and in general, Apple products are quite expensive.
Under the hood, they're no different from any other (high-end) laptop. They use premium component, but limit your choices.

To answer your question, we need to know what you're going to use it for. Surf the web, read some e-mails, watch some youtube videos? Are you going to to transport it a lot or will it stay on a fixed location? Are you going to watch/show movies on it? Are you going to do photo/video processing on it? Do you want to play any games on it? Which ones?

As for the quality of laptops, this differs, but right now, next to Apple, Lenovo, Asus, Dell and HP are renowned for being reliable. (source: Most reliable laptop makers revealed - PC Advisor)
HP and Dell have come a long way, Lenovo's always been known as a sturdy (but boring) brand. Acer is usually your bang-for-buck brand, it's a bit hit and miss for that one.

Do note, quality often represents itself in price. However, if you can give us a general idea of what you need or what you do, I could give you some general tips.

            I second Asus!
They do have great components and are a no-bullshit brand (pardon my French).
            Specifications to consider nowadays:
            * Processor (raw calcuclating speed for your laptop): go for a min. of an i5 clocked around 2.6 Ghz
            * RAM memory (workload memory for active applications): since most processors and OS's are 64 bit: 4GB
            * Hard disk drive (storage space): depends on you, really, but at least 500 gb is a comfortable amount to store your files
            * OS (your operating system): This is really personal preference. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are the current retail options. Windows 8 is a lot like Windows 7, but with the Metro interface. Some people love it, some people hate it. The point is moot, since with the soon-to-be-released service pack, windows 8 will have all it's power, but with the metro GUI disabled by user choice.

All of the above should put you in the $400 - $700 price range. Other factors that determine your price, is a graphics card, and the size of the laptop (15", 17", etc).

If you're hesitating about a certain type, don't hesitate to send me the brand and the type and I'll ook up the details for you!

            ASUS is good.

Wtv you do don't get HP, I had an HP laptop it broke after two years. I have Pentium IVs that still run after a decade.

Get an ASUS. They make their own parts which are generally favored by people who make their own computers over Hewlett Packard parts or whatever.

I own a Toshiba laptop and I can say that it is good. Try window shopping sometimes at the computer stalls or view some online computer seller to canvas about the price of the gadget. Specifications and features differs from one brand to another so you have to be very careful about this and read review first before purchasing. I will end my long comment here. Haha. Good luck.
