Question About Optical Mouse

My old optical mouse died and I'm using a spare ball mouse that is driving me
crazy. Now I know why they stopped making these things.

Question. When I replace this mouse with my new optical (getting it this morning)
do I first have to shut down my PC before I replace the mouse?

The reason I'm asking is because I seem to remember that if the mouse cable
came loose from your PC and you put it back in, it didn't work for some reason.
You had to shut it down. This was a while ago with an older computer. Is this
still true with Windows 7 or can I replace the mouse without shutting down?

It Depends on the mouse. just look for the PnP sign on your mouse package which stands for Plug and Play. which means you can just plug the device in and it starts installing the drivers and gets ready to use without restarting the machine. If it doesn't have "plug and play" written or any sign of it, better get a better mouse or you'll have that tough time again.

    Good luck!

Should not be necessary. If your new mouse is USB then you could just plug it in and the thing should start working immediately.

Are you telling me you never power off your machine?

Every USB is an PnP Device.
What if he has an old 8 pin input socket?

I think you are referring to the PS/2 6-pin mouse. Do they even make those these days? It's been long since I've seen one.

steve, i lol'd when i read ur question.

just plug it in and try it, it's a mouse, ur not installing a hard drive! takes longer to ask the question that to just do it. what's the worst that can happen if u don't shut down, plug it in and it doesn't work? u shut down and plug it in...an almost inevitable solution lol.

btw, i bought ur plr pack...great content, much appreciated
