The chance has recently come up for me to move back to he UK, where I grew up, from the US. Now I have a small at home business here, registered for tax purposes. How do I go about moving it back home?

Consult an attorney but this is my first thought:

Create a new business entity in the UK with the same name or similar.

Have the new company merge with or buy out the existing US based company.

Dissolve (formally) the US based company.

I think you can still have the business registered in US, except you need to be careful if you have to pay dual tax if also working in UK.

Here's my take on this. I think that the first suggestion is a good solution for you. Create a second company, "buy out" the first company, then dissolve the first company. However, might I suggest that you register the second company in the Bahamas or in the Channel Islands for tax purposes. There have been a lot of niche IM companies which have made it big do this same procedure. And you don't have to personally visit the Bahamas or the Channel Islands to register a company. (But of course, any reason is a good reason to visit the Bahamas.)

But do check with your lawyer first.
