    I knew most of them as a kid, but then I had a globe of the world on my desk for years.

    I'd like to see an American kid name the 6 states of Australia!

        SAD! I was bad with geography, but not THAT bad. Of course I could NOT tell you about the british areas, etc... And I couldn't do the australia challenge either. But I could find the countries on a map.

        I recently watched a film where they asked AMERICAN college students about thanksgiving. YIKES!

      I actually used to know a few of them, but I don't think the average school in the US teaches such things! Did you know there was a kind of united states of europe long ago? The confoederatio helvetica. They even speak FOUR languages! THAT is why Switzerland's ISO2 desgnation is CH, and why it is on their money. Can you name all of THEM? AND, FOR THE WIN, can you describe all the banners? WhenI said they existed long ago, I am NOT saying they disappeared. They are places like Basel, and Bern, and Zurich. And NO, I am not saying I could do that. BUT, I thought it was a nice challenge to meet yours!

      Oh well, I guess the brits can't say so much against the Americans lack of knowledge of other countries. Truth be known, schools seem to teach only that there are 50 states in the US, with a reference to one possession that many may think IT is a state, and a reference to a district so strong that people living THERE seem to think it is a state! There are like 6 or so OTHER possessions that some may never even have heard of.

      But GEE, in my life I have probably heard of over a dozen countries disappearing and over dozen appearing. Some changed their names a LOT, but remained substantially the same, from what I have heard. SOME kept everything, and changed a LOT.

    I guess I don't see the big deal. I can't think of a likely modern day scenario where being able to properly label the globe makes a bit of difference. All anyone really needs to know is where they are and where the need to go. Google does the rest.

    I'm completely willing to admit that I can't, for the life of me, find Middle Earth on a globe. You'd think it'd be somewhere along the equator, but it isn't there.

      I went to one map site on the internet once, and I think it WAS google, that had the instructions BACKWARDS(NOT REVERSED, but like MIRRORED!)! I mean it was like turn left on street a, and right on street b when it should have been like right on A and RIGHT on B! I only had THAT happen to me once or twice, but it was EARY! I mean if you followed any street in a particular directio it sai, you would never find the other street.

      ONCE, it said to go in one direction on a freeway when it SHOULD have said to go the OTHER way. Admittedly, as the crow flies, it was VERY close to being correct, but going north and finidng that you now have to drive a LONG distance to turn around and go to a turn you were only a mile away from is upsetting at best.

      Even GPS systems! Try using it in parts of downtown chicago where the trains interrupt the satellite signal, or milpitas california where the turns are SO close, on the freeway, that it tells you to turn onto a street just as you pass it.

      At least GPS systems and, to a lessor degree, internet maps, USUALLY work fine.

        I was kinda referring to booking a flight, pulling up maps, ect. I rarely see a need for driving directions from Cleveland, Ohio to, say, Mogadishu. However, I can see how my point was muddy. The rum is winning the ratio battle with the eggnog at this point in the evening.

        You are SO misinformed. The entrance to middle earth is in S. America. The S Pole story was a diversion. You never hear of the real entrance because the only people who have gone in have never come out. The tribes don't let them go because they don't want everyone and jack down there.

          The South Pole was originally a diversion...until a tunnel was dug from the South Pole to South America. (All because of a clerical error).
          Now, the South Pole is the exit. Unfortunately, nobody can ever get all the way through the gift shop. Antarcticans are notoriously known for their massive gift shops. Lots of winter coats are sold...very few Hawaiian shirts.

          They are having a sale on coats right now. But they are mostly in Hobbit sizes. Tell Riffle, he may be interested.

        I wouldn't draw doodles, but I guess I would do the same. A lot of countries were often shown as part of the USSR until it broke up. When that happened,some even changed names. As for Australians? Paul Hogan said one reason he got into acting was because so many asked things like how long he, an Australian, was speaking english. I guess they got it mixed up with Austria.

    American kids don't know the states, I'm rather surprised anyone out of the US would care enough about our states to actually know them. They did seem to have a handle on Nebraska ("Nobody cares") at any rate.

    Europe is a different story. Those are all countries and not just areas within one country. Americans still don't know them, though. I don't think it's fair that Transylvania isn't still there. That's my favorite country over there and it's just gone.

    A lot of the Americans did better than what I could and as for placing American states on the map well let's just say I wouldn't have a clue. Still at least I now know where Texas is for all the good it will do me.

    These Brits have no need to apologize. My wife works at a high-school here, and those Brits would have scored in the upper 10% of the school on that test. I've actually seen many of these tests filled out by high-school seniors, and they're not nearly as complete as these.

      Agreed.

      I was stunned to see how well they actually did begging the question as to the point of the article...

      Regardless, I'm sure many people can live a happy and prosperous life without having knowledge of any one state.

        The tunnels are in S. America, not Africa. I think you better buy a better map - you're gonna get lost for sure.

        BTW - there really are tunnels in S. America - that part I'm not making up. People that go to explore them don't come back and it's fully believed in the exploration circles that the tribes down there just keep people from returning to keep the artifacts from drawing in major exploration firms. The tunnels cover from hundreds to thousands of miles. On top of new archaeological findings around the globe, they may be around 30,000 years old. Just a factoid that I find pretty interesting.
