Hi everyone. I've been a minor student of web design and internet marketing for about 8 years now. I've taught myself a fair deal about all aspects of the industry and had mainly been teaching myself in order to help grow a hobby site of mine.

However, recently I decided to get out of my former career as an arborist and I managed to get hired on by a local internet marketing guy as a sort of all around guy.

I'll tell ya, sitting in an office all day is quite a change from hanging from a rope with a chainsaw in hand. It's a whole different vibe.

My boss recommended this site as a good place to further my education in the online marketing aspect of the job. I'm already a pretty fair hand with the technical side of things including PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3 and Photoshop.

It's the applied marketing aspect that I feel I need to expand my knowledge of. I'm familiar with Keyword Research and Planning and proper SEO techniques, but there's so much more to internet marketing than that.

I guess what I'm looking for right now is direction... I have a solid foundation but really very little practical application apart from my hobby site. (I've built it up to the point where it's getting 30,000 visits per month)

I've got some plans for monetizing the hobby site beyond adsense finally... I never intended for the site to become a source of revenue, but no sense letting a potential source of cash get away right?

Anyway, I'm getting off topic here... the reason for this post is to introduce myself to the community and ask some of you veterans what you would recommend in the way of direction.

As a total newcomer to the internet marketing game, I'm kind of torn with where I should focus my studies.

Should I focus on Blackhat methods? Whitehat? Somewhere in between?

Which methods work the best for you? Everyone wants fast results...

Does spamming links in comments actually work in anyone's favor? What if the site has the no follow attribute?

What are the best blogs to follow?

What about automation? Are there any tasks that you find yourselves doing repeatedly that could benefit from an automated solution?

These are just a few questions of many I have.

I'm confident in my ability to do anything I put my mind to, but I'm not so conceited as to think I know it all. I like to learn and the only way to do it is to ask.

Hopefully I'm not coming off as too noobish. I just tend to get full on into any job I do and so far I'm enjoying this new one and have learned a lot in just 3 weeks of having started.

Thanks for reading and thanks for providing such a great site. Nothing beats a good forum.

Oh... and what's the scoop on The War Room deal? Is it actually worth $37 bucks? I've got no products to promote and my hobby site isn't anything related to helping people make money online or anything. It's probably nothing anyone here would be interested in. Very small niche. I don't want to spam a link or anything, suffice to say it's nothing a WSO would benefit.

I'm basically whoring myself out for peanuts right now due to my lack of concrete experience so $40 is basically a tenth of my weekly pay. I can't afford to spend lightly anymore. I'm used to making a little over twice that for climbing trees... I just hate doing it and would rather earn less for doing a more skilled mental job in order to gain the experience.

Damn... I just laid out all my cards didn't I...

Welcome! You sound more intelligent than the usual folk that come in here expecting to make millions with a push of a button with no skills or experience. You also seem to have more skills than the usual person who comes into this.

What kind of direction are you looking for? Are you looking for a coach? A program? Business models? Inspiration? Motivation? Validation? I can't give you direction right now since the only thing I know about you is that you were an Arborist cutting trees, and someone who knows a decent amount of coding languages. That, and research methods and SEO...as well as the jargon of white hat, black hat, and grey hat.

Spamming links in comments DOES NOT work for ANYONE. It MIGHT have worked YEARS AGO, but it doesn't anymore. You might get a fluke sale from a retard who doesn't know any better...but it's nothing to build a business on...and it is let's say, morally questionable. For SEO purposes, that method is dead as well...especially on no-follow attributes.

I wouldn't follow any blogs unless they serve as points of syndication for your content...or serve as a means for inspiration to generate content. Following them for information is a consumer behavior...not a capitalistic behavior.

Automation? Doesn't exist. Outsourcing tasks? Yes, all the time, but that falls under management...not automation. And no, you're not coming off as noobish, it's nice to see someone else who is articulate.

No, the War Room IS NOT worth even the tiny $37 investment. The only real value I received from that was the ability to have more inbox space, which is pretty pathetic. You're not missing out on any information or intel that's tucked away in the War Room. Trust me. It's just a collection of bullshit not worth the servers their stored on. People will disagree, but those same people aren't making money.

And whoring yourself out is what you have to do to build up your network and portfolio. Just make sure that you build up your portfolio of "concrete experience" as you complete jobs. Also, demand more money as you get more work. Pricing is based on supply, demand, and whatever the market will bear...which is code for "if I can convince people to spend X amount...then it's worth X amount." It's a professional BS artist's favorite phrase apart from "guaranteed"! LOL

    Welcome again.

Thanks for the warm greeting and I appreciate your frankness regarding the War Room. I had an idea that it might not be all that it's hype would lead you to believe.

So far as for what I'm looking for... I guess I'm really not exactly sure. I've read so much on all aspects of Internet marketing, but just spending a few weeks with this guy I work for has shown me all sorts of new angles I didn't even know existed.

One of these angles is automation... that is... finding a task that people find themselves doing online over and over and automating it. I have access to software that enables me to easily create bots for such things, but I don't know what I could use it for yet... I'd like to make some sort of bot that others would find useful enough to pay $20 or $30 dollars for and market that.

I'm also wishing I had made this introduction in the Internet marketing forum as it doesn't seem to be getting much notice here... ah well... live and learn. I've only just begun to dig around this place to see what it has to offer.

I found an interesting thread about what to do when your desperate for cash last night after posting and after reading a few posts in that thread I came across an idea for an Room that I immediately started writing up. I got about 1500 words deep before I passed out but I'm eager to get back to it here shortly.

I think my problem is knowledge overload... it's like... well... like right after Halloween when you have all that candy and you have to choose what to eat first. You end up eating one of everything and pretty soon you're all bloated and groaning and kicking yer self in the arse.

My phone is about to die so I got a cut this short to go charge it... A little more about me...

I'm the atypical computer geek... you'd never know it to look at me but I'd rather be reading a book and learning something knew I can market than out partying with friends. Computers have always been an interest and since I could never get one as a kid I guess I went hog wild as an adult after I got one. As soon as I learn a new trick I'm soon after talking to folk and trying to sell my skills. Painting... drywall... tile... I've tried my hand at many trades and sold my own fair share of jobs. I sold my first tile job after helping my Uncle out and learning the basics. I talked to a lady at 7-11 and she mentioned wanting to get her kitchen tiled so I gave here a fair market price and sold the job. I immediately went to a Home Improvement store and got a flier telling me about the few things I needed to know but didn't. I did the job and ended up building the lady two closets and more...

I'm a hustler but over the last year or two I've kinda lost everything and run through my savings. I'm at square 1 and trying to change my focus from the blue collar trades to the white collar world. One thing I don't much like is selling myself as a Web designer. It's annoying as hell. People want the world for a dollar and I can have a perfectly good looking thought out design shot to he'll by some guy that wants an animated gift of a flashy star on the page... bugs the cap out of me dealing with those clients.

Anyway... I'm down to 10%... gotta run. Thanks again for the reply and I hope to hear more.

      Git'r'dun!

(Edit: I'm checking out your blogs and you've got some great tips... thanks for replying again... I found a little more direction just from a few of your posts)

You could possibly do that with the software bots. That would fall under product creation/vendor marketing. There are 3 fundamental business models to choose from or work within the internet industry:

        1. Sell Services
        2. Affiliate Marketing
        3. Vendor Marketing

That's it. Everyone from Facebook, Amazon, Google, to little ole college kids building email lists fall within those 3 models. You're either selling services...selling someone else's services and/or products...or selling your own products.

Sounds like you have experience with creative employment...which could be a vertical market (niche) all in itself. I know what you mean about being atypical...I hated computers and was a wild child, so sitting still in front of a computer for hours shocks everyone I know and grew up with...including myself.

Glad you've found my posts and articles helpful. I find it funny that no one else has even left a response to your thread except me...and it's been viewed over 100 times. SMH.

Let me know if you need any help, I'll be glad to give it, free of charge too. lol

Spamming links in comments doesn't work; that's true. However, it doesn't do any harm to leave a link in a post that's topically relevant to whatever you're linking to. Personally, I wouldn't spend more than 30 minutes a week searching for such posts, though.

The one other significant thing that the War Room offers is that you can pick up a great many WSOs for free, and without being forced onto anyone's opt-in list. True, most WSOs are crap, but some are interesting or even useful.

One thing you might want to consider is getting a Google Adwords certification. Coupled with experience working for someone else in Internet marketing, you could probably hang your own shingle before too long.

      Good luck.

I was aactually adwords certified before... Google recently tossed out everything old in favor of new and I need to retake the test. At least it's free this time.

I'm also glad you described what a vertical was... I was doing something at work yesterday where the term Verticals came up and I thought it referred to Skyscraper ads... go figure.

Now that I know it means niche it makes a lot more sense. As you can see... it's the little things that elude me sometimes.

Thanks for the advice and I checked out the Graphics River and signed up. Figure I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Any advice on what sorts of work sells best there would be great! I'm thinking of icon packs or something to get started. I still need to browse around a bit and I'm gonna see what the top 20 sellers are doing to get some ideas too.

So far as tips on creating a thriving site...

Long hours... dedication... and a true enjoyment of the subject matter go a long way. My site happened to fill a niche that was relatively new at the time and I spent many a night just hanging out in a chatroom people in that niche frequented and drawing in new members. After a while word of mouth started taking over and the membership grew and grew. I really saw my biggest increase in traffic about a year ago though... I started getting into SEO then and did some keyword research. I picked a keyword combo that seemed to have a lot of searches every month and registered a domain with that long tale search term and pointed it to the domain. About 6 months later I had forgotten about it... until my analytics suddenly spiked up three times normal. The domain had kicked in at last. I ended up selling a half share in the site for two grand about 3 months ago in order to solve a major problem I was having and now I have a partner who is motivated to help me griw the site and better monetize it. I had a plan we're going to implement here within the next week or two that might start off slow, but has pretty darned good potential within a year or so if there isn't a riot over it.

I'll be literally creating a whole new career field with it.

We've also just started a supporters subscription plan that should help out in covering the hosting cost. In 8 yrs of running the site I haven't shucked out a dime of my own money. I started it on free hosting and with a free forum and within 3 months had someone offer me the funds to purchase two years of real hosting so I could use PHP and whatnot... my ISP had some crappy webspace that didnt allow anything so fancy and I wanted to be able to install my own forum software and such. Down the road I had another member cover a vbulletin license and then another cover the upgrade to vb4 cms... Over all those years I've just asked for donations when the hosting bill came due every two years and never had trouble raising the cash. The closest call I had was this last time when I had to upgrade to the dedicsted server... I went from needing 200 for two years to almost 800... I asked... and I received... just barely though. The google ads should cover us from now on with plenty left over to spare. It's earning at least 90 a month on them but last week with some tweaks we were pushing ten a day for a few days so I'm hoping that's a trend we can keep up.

I like building communities and would like to find another niche to build up like this one. Considering I've learned most of what I know from the establushment of the hobby site... I could go into a new one much stronger.

I've made a lot of mistakes over the years and I've learned much from each. I've got the current site running well with a staff that keeps it running even if i don't show my face for a couple months... I even dropped out of site for a year a while back just to see what would happen and it kept on trucking along.

Anyway... hard work... love what you build... and don't give up on it... I guess it also helps that I never intended for it to make money. I just wanted a place where foljs that shared an interest could get together and have fun with it.

By that criteria, I judge it a success. That It turns a minor profit is a bonus... Now I'd like to multiply those profits.

Thanks for the advise, you are probably the first person l have come across here, that explained the whole thing in detail! :p

I always thought that l needed some top secret trick to get it kicking, but l guess a toy and game inventing site is just a dud niche? But l always hang onto it, since l could add computer games into it, etc. And l do have Adsence on there, eventhough $3 a month isn't really life changing!

As for Graphicriver, phew, big subject, but l will do my best.

When l first started l created a filter for a graphics program, (overscreen colors, etc) but they wanted me to improve it, so l had to overhaul it, (only way to fix it) and they binned it!

Then moved into mobile phone 3D designs, and spend up to 6 weeks doing a huge 3D render of iphones from 3 angles, ect. And they binned that as well.

The laptop almost became airborne that day!

But l dusted my ego off, and tried again, then finally succeeded with a flat design!

So far l have done 2 of these products, and they have both sold, but it takes a lot of effort to create, and doesn't make much!

I have also done a Facebook Fanpage graphic, but as said before a lot of work and not much back!

The area l would recomend for maximum profits, and relatively quick creation is Flyers!

Or posters, most of the most successful people on this site, do flyers, for Beach partys, etc.

Usually the amount of effort required to do these wouldn't make them any more viable than the other things l tried, but there is a trick!

If you Google photo sites, and run through their terms, or copyright conditions, you will usually find that they allow up to 250,000 sales by third party buyers!

There are several sites around, but l like Shutterstock!

Just go there figure out a suitable design, then buy the elements done by other artists!

So l might go there, spend $50 get 5 images, coconut, palm tree, etc, and put it all together.

I am currently scaling up to $250 which will give me 750 designs!

Eventhough the initial design bombed using this method, with the $50 level, l have learned a lot and will take a calculated risk by scaling. I have seen designs a monkey could do, so l figure l will get it through!

Flyers, typically make $20 a month, but can make up to $150!

So if l do 2 to 3 flyers a month!!!!

But as said before this isn't easy, and you need to be fanatically persistent to get it working!

And it would be good if you know Photoshop back the front, or other accepted graphics program, but you are your own boss, so it is up to you!

Also don't try to hard, because you will usually slip up, and get soft rejected. It takes time to get into the Moderators heads and understand what they want and allow!

Also try this little trick l use, which is to go to "most recent" when searching for the flyer niche you want to try, it will bring up the most recent ones that got through.

Evato does update their rules, and if you pick flyer, put it in the flyer Template niche category, or the mods will probably soft reject it , and tell you to resubmit.

I am almost through sorting, (which is a big job) and then just need to get it down to 750!

Then figure out what l need for the first few, and download them first, etc.

I have also seen some terrible Facebook fanpage graphics, (fuzzy image, etc) get accepted, and some actually sell?

It seems that if you come across as a professional or wanting to be, they will only accept the very best from you.

But if you come across as a newbie, that isn't that interested in making a career out of this, then they might slack off?

It is good they want the best from you, but putting everything you have into a project that gets binned isn't easy, but like anything in life once you reach 99 to 100 % competency, then you start to make decent money from this.

Top authors are making 20 -30 thousand a month with this, so l figure it is worth it. And since l am nuts about tropical stuff, and great at graphics, it will work out in the end!

Good luck, and let me know what you nichname is over there, so l can say hello!

Methinks you tried a few submits there... they succeeded! DOH!

Thanks a ton for the good advice. I noticed right off the bat that flyers are what the top sellers are moving and I've got a notion to make some up. I live in Florida so I can get tons of my own palm tree photos to get me started. I like you're stock reuse trick though and I'll definitely have to give that a shot too.

I really appreciate all the advice. I registered with the name duvik over there too. That's my general online name for forums and such.

I'll be sure to let you know when I get something approved over there. I'm looking forward to it.

Quite alright TJ, and to be honest the trick l use, is what most if not all the top authors over there, use, to save time and money and produce a professional design.

Certainly a lot easier to buy off the shelf than to find a graphics artist in the Philippines!

Other tips are, to not reinvent the wheel, l learned that one the last graphic l tried to get through, just do what everyone one else is doing, especially initially!

If you want to do a car design from different angles and sizes, while everyone else does it same size, then there is probably a good reason for it!

Try to use high quality background designs. Don't use a design created by someone else, as it may been seen as low quality, since its elements aren't realistic only simulated!

And Shutterstock does have women models on there as well, which fall under Shutterstock's Copyright rule allowances, (l contacted them to double check).

You have probably noticed most flyers have attractive women in the middle!

Another important tip when downloading a ton, is don't forget Silhouettes!

Those things are invaluable when burning or grading in background elements into your designs!

Download small elements as big as possible, as they will be standard size on a standard flyer size, and don't download highly complex designs, remember you will still have to clean up the edges, and some designs like water will drive you nuts trying to clean it up.

Ok, that will do, l will find your name over there and say hi, good luck!

      And have fun! :p

Well, I requested a cleanup of the duplicate posts and it appears that another post or two got snipped out... ah well. I think the most informative posts in here are remaining...

I have one question I'd like to bring up as I'm not sure if I read it in one of the replies to this thread or in another thread on here last night... I've come across so many good tips here and tried sharing a few of my own... Information Overload!

Anyway, my question for now is... Have any of you tried the Warriors for Hire forum and if so, what were the results? It looks like it's saturated with mainly web designers and content authors.

I recently had to learn AfterEffects and found that I enjoy editing videos. Do you think that's something I could work marketing as a service there successfully (provided I can produce what I promise of course)

I guess the real question is... Is it worth paying $20 to advertise a service there? I believe I read that the best bet for a newb with a slim portfolio and no testimonials would be to offer his service at a heavy discount to some members with clout that could then provide some weighted testimony in exchange for the discount.

Of course, I realize that with the right service even one gig could make the $20 expense worth it. I'm just wondering which skill I'd be best served advertising.

I think video editing might be something interesting and like I said, I didn't see it on the frontpage. I should really dig a few pages deeper just to make a better judgement now that I think about it.

If I find that I'm wrong and vids are more prevalent than I thought, well, even if they are, The automation I spoke of earlier might be another option. I'm thinking I could ask around to see what sorts of tasks the folk around here find themselves doing over and over online and if something strikes me that I think I could create a bot for, I could offer to create it in there. Either that or package it as a WSO if the demand were there.

I need to run a search for similar threads while I have that in mind too before I waste folks time askiing about something that may have already been covered.

I'm definitely starting to gain some focus though. This site is just a wealth of information I haven't even begun to tap yet and I'm lovin it.

Edit: Found a guy 3 pages deep that was doing nice looking videos for $10 per minute.... I'm thinking that's waaaay cheap... not sure if I'd want to try to compete as I'd feel like my time would be worth more than that. Figure it would take 1-2 hours minimum to create an original well designed video of that type and it's just not something I could compete with. If the members are used to getting skilled work like that for so little... sheesh... I'm not seeing selling any service like that. I can't fault the guy selling the service so cheaply... when ya need cash ya need it and I see some offers more higher priced work in his thread but still... bah. I'm just in shock. I expected a higher price bar...

Edit 2: and searching for the automation software brings up tons of results. It's called ubot and it's definitely well known around these parts I see. Still, might be I can find some ideas on something to create anyway. Thank goidness for Google too... seems my galaxy won't let me use the forums built in search function. I also have a problem with that WarRoom triangle in the bottom right of the site expanding to fill the screen if I pinchzoom in...
