I saw this documentary that had an intriguing trailer about how parents came upon a unique approach to their son's autism spectrum condition. Seeing that their son's affinity to a horse inspired speech and engagement with other people, they they decided to go on a horseback riding trip across Mongolia. When I saw the documentary itself, I found the parents to be incredibly flighty and downright silly and ridiculous. They wanted to visit Mongolian shamans, who include horses in their shamanism, in the hopes they it could help their son. As ridiculous as the parents were in my estimation, the trip did have a powerful healing effect on their son, resulting in dramatic improvement in his behaviour.
Silly as I found the parents to be, the premise of their journey struck a personal chord with me, I'm thankful that my son is "neurotypical" (unlike me), though I was for a time ready for him to suddenly withdraw from the world as I once did. Anyway, this documentary also planted the idea in my head to someday take a trip across Mongolia on horseback, perhaps Inner Mongolia as well.
