Morning. Please tell me what the term "swiping" means. I am only familiar with it as a term for capturing cc data, but have seen it mentioned in relation to solo ads.

I'm clueless. TYIA. Cheers. - Frank

P.S. For that matter what the heck is a solo ad??? lol Sorry, I have been living in a cave.

Not sure about anywhere else but swiping is rather like pinching, or stealing successfully performing content, ads, sales letters etc to give them ideas. Other less scrupulous marketers simply use it as there own. It's basically swiping other peoples ideas to get ideas of your own, or the idea of how to right a good sales letter, advert etc.

Solo ads are when you find someone in your niche with a nice, preferably large and targeted list. You then pay them to send your email to their list.

I'm assuming you've been told to "swipe" some good solo ads?

Oh, so it's just a another word for "stealing." Got it.

      I see.

No. I just see them mentioned quite frequently and since I came here to learn, I might as well not be afraid to ask what some may consider "huh" questions. I'm that new at all of this, regardless of the fact that I'm older than dirt.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Cheers. - Frank

As for asking, if you don't know, I couldn't care a dam what the question is, just ask Frank, nothing "duh" about that at all.

It's not technically stealing, when done properly. I often see things in sales letters, adverts and can see it's working, I'll often test things they've used. That's not stealing, it's what most people do. I adjust the idea for my audience.

It's when people swipe a sales letter and virtually use it word for word, or simply swipe someone's article and post it themselves or some other blatant thieving.

I think it depends really on who has said it too. If you swipe to remind yourself of good ideas you've seen, to test later, it's not stealing. If you swipe it to use word for word for example, then that makes one a thief.

Having said that, you know the difference between stealing and seeing a good idea, making a note of it and applying it to your campaign in some way or another.

Edit - Dan has replied as I was doing so in his usual easier to understand vocabulary. I have an awful tendency to ramble, Dan tends to explain it with less fluff than me. Thank you Dan.

Your patience and assistance is truly appreciated. I do look to learn more than one thing, each day.

To say swiping is stealing depends on the usage of the swiped material. You might "swipe" material to study it, see how it works and utilize a similar process in your own work.

Sometimes people sell their own material as "swipe files," thus allowing the purchaser to use it how they see fit.

I understand. Stealing was a poor choice of words based upon further clarification by you. Thanks for that.

There are solo ads and then there are solo ads that have been bastarrdized by the MMO crowd. Real solos go something like this. Someone has a newsletter or ezine (same thing, actually) in a particular market. They have a healthy sized list they mail to regularly. They might offer a top level ad, (position in the publication) a mid level ad and an ad placed near the bottom of their publication.

Obviously, the top ad will get more views and consequently, it will cost more. The ezine owner will sometimes offer an advertiser a solo. This is a single ad within the publication. Then there's a solo that is sent to his/her list with no content other than the ad itself. There are no guaranteed clicks. There are no swipes. There is no "done for you" magic. The advertiser is responsible for writing everything. And there are no guarantees by the seller. The results you get are based on the relevancy of the ad YOU write.

Then there's the MMO/IM solo ad circus. You pay to have an ad (only an ad, no content other than the ad) sent to a list. You are guaranteed a certain number of clicks. In this case "swipes" are often provided by the list owner, supposedly because he/she knows what his list will go for.

MMO/IM solos are sometimes, if not often, fraudulent in that a list owner has plenty of ways to "manufacture" results. They do this with software along with networks of other solo ad hustlers with proxies and multiple email accounts, resulting in the sucker, er... buyer of the ad getting the promised clicks, signups and occasionally a "sale." When a crooked solo ad seller is taking in so much money, they can certainly spring for a purchase every so often to keep the clientele happy.

    Hope this helps.

Ouch! That's another one I don't know the meaning of. Actually, I don't recall coming across that one and I do peruse each section of the forum, some more than others, of course. I totally missed that one.

Yes. That sort of covers it all, I'd imagine. That brings me back to one thing that I realize about being here. I have nothing to sell anyone. I guess at some level I can be excused for not being the sharpest pencil in the drawer as much of what goes on here has no true relevance to my life. I know that some of the brightest minds are among the people here, so I read every day in an effort to glean anything that may be relevant to what I am trying to do.

That being said, I do learn a few things each day that at some point in the future may be very helpful as I get my project off the ground.

The level of graciousness in attempting to help me and others keeps me coming back for more. Be careful, lest you create a monster.

Thanks for your valuable time in explaining things to me.

      Cheers. - Frank

Don't worry about it Frank. The WF has a long history of creating Monsters. I was in the same boat as you when I got here - it was my first week or two online at all that I fell into this place. I had to figure it out for awhile before I was able to make my first post.

One thing I've seen over the years is that people here will bend over backward to help out people that are well grounded in reality and are able to talk intelligently about varied subjects even if they know nothing of the online world yet. There are millions of bits of information that have nothing to do with IM that people need to run their businesses or just are good to know to make life easier or to make good decisions. If you are helpful in your own way - or even are good for a well-needed grin sometimes, you provide your own value to this community.

Never feel bad for not knowing something to do with this particular game. I've been here almost a decade now and there's still a major amount of things I am clueless about. I do my own thing and contribute as I can or want to. That's why it's called a "community".

Sad to say that I have been online since there has been an online. Never worked online for income. Only pleasure - for lack of a better term. I have arrived at this place very late in the game.

So - you are saying that I'm immediately disqualified???
and are able to talk intelligently about varied subjects
As in breeding over 100 species of Corydoras. That knowledge and $1.00 will get me a cup of hot coffee, most places. Doubt it will be of much use to anyone, here.
even if they know nothing of the online world yet.
There we go. You're singin' my song.

      Grins I can't guarantee. A wince on the other hand . . . . .

Well, I hope that I can be a contributing member of the community. At this time I have nothing of importance to offer. My "niche" is so incredibly small and specialized that I'm not even going to mention it. When I'm a bit more comfortable, I will. Even though I have always been a top producer in my field it is so specialized that most of what I know and teach goes against what most would agree with, here. Trust me on this. The last thing I need is a flame war.

Fortunately, my working days are behind me and what I do now is mainly to kill time until I settle down for the big dirt nap. I have the luxury of picking and choosing my endeavors based upon my mood.

I'm blessed and I know it, but it wasn't easy getting here.

Greetings Terra. Corydoras are small South American catfish, common in the aquarium trade. The range in value from from 25¢ up to $250, depending on rarity and the degree of difficulty in coaxing them to breed in captivity.

Compared to many incredibly beautiful freshwater tropical fish they are a bit nondescript, but to those who love them there's nothing that compares.

I really have spawned over 100 species and that puts me in the company of just a handful of breeders in the world to hit that milestone. I can lay claim to being the only breeder in the world to ever document a captive spawning of CW016 (CW means that the ichthyologists have not applied a scientific name to the little critter), one of the most beautiful of all Corys, if I do say so myself.

I could go on but that would probably cross the line regarding blatant self-promotion.

I hope that helped, a little. Cheers. - Frank

Yep. I use them as a replacement for psychotropic meds to treat my PTSD. At one time I had 320 tanks. I closed my commercial operation due to an extended period of severe health issues, but I still have 53 tanks going at the moment, just for personal pleasure.

There are almost as many ways for fish to spawn as there are families of fish.

In the case of "swiping" context is everything. A swipe file is a collection of headlines, bullet points, sales letters and other copywriting content that a copywriter saves to use for inspiration and idea generation for writing his/her own sales copy. It's a long-accepted practice as long as you aren't plagiarizing the content, but instead using it as mentioned, for inspiration and to generate your own ideas.
