In just one quarter!!
Twitter shares hammered after hours on half-billion dollar loss - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Are they all driving around in gold-plated Ferraris or something??

Seriously, what are they spending that kind of money on?

      Bitter much?

They've been struggling with how to turn a profit for
a very long time now. In the beginning they were
      hopeful, now they seem desperate.

I've often wondered if they are going to be able to
survive until technology improves enough to multiply
the amount of characters that can be sent in messages?

Otherwise they won't be able to place advertisements,
because they gave almost all of the space to users.

I'm still skeptical about how well social media works as a publicly traded company. There was a lot of hype and a lot of interest but I can't shake the feeling that most of that came from people that don't really understand social media.

Sites like Facebook and Twitter are wonderful for people like us who need to reach customers. It's great for regular people who just want to waste some time and connect with friends. It is not, however, a traditional business.

Social media companies don't really produce anything. They facilitate communication more than anything else. I just don't see what you would be investing in. Every trend, fad, and craze on the internet eventually dies out, at which point it''s replaced by the next big thing.

There's no real equity, there's no perpetuity, there's just a limited peak that always dies out.

Also, about 90% of their revenue comes from advertisers. Where does the other 10% come from?

I hope it's not the government. (I'm only being partly sarcastic here)

I don't know... Burberry, Nutella, Target, Disney, Coke,
they all seem to be doing well on Facebook/Twitter?

And Pringles has always been strong when it comes to
social marketing, even before the Internet.

All of them have had similar success to more modern
companies such as Netflix and Eat24.

The primary difference, in my humble opinion, is that
a lot of corporations don't embrace social media--
They think of it as mere Public Relations, a necessary
evil that might also help with marketing.

Then after using it with methods that are the complete
opposite of what is proven to work, they blame social
media itself, because after all, they already have some
degree of success without it and shouldn't have to worry
if some of the cheese has been moved to a place they
    don't like!
