Yes seen that a few months ago. I loved it. Made me jump more than a few times. Bit of a disapointing ending I thought but really good spooky film overall.

I love it when they say "Based on a true story". What that means is "Based on a story someone told someone else, and said was true".

I have a friend that is still convinced that "dramatic re-enactments" are the real event being filmed, and not just based on what was said.

I think the word 'based' is fairly broad too.

Interestingly, these to paragraphs from Wiki stood out for me...

The book was written after Tam Mossman, an editor at the publishing house Prentice Hall, introduced George and Kathy Lutz to Jay Anson. The Lutzes did not work directly with Anson, but submitted around 45 hours of tape-recorded recollections to him, which were used as the basis of the book. Estimates of the sales of the book are around 10 million copies from its numerous editions. Anson is said to have based the title of The Amityville Horror on "The Dunwich Horror" by H. P. Lovecraft, which was published in 1929.

The various owners of the house since the Lutz family left in 1976 have reported no problems while living there. James Cromarty, who bought the house in 1977 and lived there with his wife Barbara for ten years, commented: "Nothing weird ever happened, except for people coming by because of the book and the movie."

I have a friend that is still convinced that "dramatic re-enactments" are the real event being filmed, and not just based on what was said.

I was shocked the first time I talked to someone like that -he was arguing "facts" of a case with someone else and I realized the man was basing his opinion on the re-enactment.

When the other person pointed out "those were actors" - the guy argued "they wouldn't be allowed to show that if it weren't true". Shake your head and keep walkin'.

  To some people, these events are very real.
  
  If you hear voices, or noises, or see movement from no apparent source;
  Depending on your beliefs, they can be interpreted as many things. And some of them are pretty scary.
  
  I was talking to a childhood friend, (this is years ago) and she was telling me about her experience with an Ouija board. She was telling me that it flew across the room, and there was a loud sound..and she saw red eyes floating in the air.
  
  I asked a few more questions, and I realized that I was there (with 3 or 4 other kids). The only thing that happened out of the ordinary, was that her dad told us to stop laughing so hard, because he was on the phone.
  
  I decided not to mention that my experience was way different than what she was remembering years later.

Based on a true story still means that subjectivity will likely come in to play. Ed and Lorraine Warren, the American paranormal investigators and authors portrayed in the film had a number of very unusual and unexplained experiences throughout their careers, by many accounts. I know the Science types on the forum may 'rubbish' or downplay the whole paranormal angle, but I for one am still challenged and puzzled by some of the events described in 'The Conjuring'.

Can science explain all mysteries and solve all problems? Nope. But the perceived arrogance of some scientific investigators will sometimes lead them to dismiss any experience that falls outside the boundaries of their 'superior understanding'.

Um.....was being sarcastic. Michio Kaku is my favorite physicist. He has said pretty close to the same thing as your bottom quote here. Sorry to sound like that was "aimed" at ya. LMAO. But now that we know............we will use it to your disadvantage whenever convenient. :p

Come on Sal, you must have seen all those Amityville Horror films? It's the same house.

Except for a couple of scenes, I didn't think the movie was scary at all. I like my horror stuff to have a basis in reality. Like the Saw series or being thrown in a pit full of snakes.

And how dumb are those people? If they knew there's a spirit trying to get them that shows up the same time every night, why would they sleep in separate rooms?

Some of my Christian (Catholic) friends were scared to death. They lost me at exorcism, however.

That's where you and I differ. I don't like "slasher" type horror fiction at all. I like a good story about the supernatural - Poltergeist, Omen, Fantasm, etc. To me it's the story that makes it good - not the truth value. I didn't know The Conjuring was based on a true story until it was mentioned in the thread. I just enjoyed the story. If I wanna see real life true scary crap and wildly bizarre forms of dementia, I can go downtown places like Detroit or Chicago. I watch movies to escape reality, not to observe it.

"Based on" can be pretty loose. Is it a fact or part of the screen play that events were so wild that the church would agree to an exorcism? Events have to be both verifiable and pretty intense for the church to step in. As for the interpretation of events, yeah, that varies from philosophy to philosophy.

Very strange occurrences do happen in real life. To be so skeptical as to think that wild things do not ever happen is not skepticism - it's completely closed minded. I watched the trailer a few days ago and that was enough for me to not be able to sleep right for about two days.

I still want to check it out though.
