I was always just a little disappointed in him as a host. He wasn't that bad - just I thought they could have done better. After Johnny and Ed though, any late night talk host had a hard way to go. They were the kings of the trade.

Happy Retirement to Dave at any rate.

Just once, I'd like one of the talky-talky celebrities to announce "I'm retiring"....and then just leave.

Avoid the long goodbye, the reminiscing, the "last time you'll be on my show" with half the guests, the "best moments of"....just go.

This yokel has been phoning it in for years. I have not watched him since the night he psychologically raped Lindsay Lohan, even after she begged him to stop. I have never witnessed a more mean-spirited spectacle on TV.

I have no personal feelings for Ms. Lohan, whatsoever - but the sadistic glee shown by this loser was pathetic. - Frank

Everyone has their price. The amount they pay him has kept him for the past 5 years that he's been sleepwalking.
I honestly don't feel sorry for the guests.
I felt a little sorry for her, but more sorry for him. Someday his son may get to see that tape and realize what a scumbag his old man, was. He's a turd with legs.

Because of Frank's post, I watched the inteview on HBO and IMO, it was hardly as bad as Frank is making it sound.

With about a minute or two left in the video Lohan was in tears. Not because of anything mean Letterman said, but because he was supporting her. As a matter of fact, she told Dave that she "loved seeing him" in the last minute of the video. Hardly the response of someone that was "psychologically raped".

Maybe people should watch it and make up their own mind:

I watched it live and I've made up my mind. It was cruel, thoughtless, heartless and totally uncalled for. This is a woman, who at the time, was going through a very rough period in her life. I guess I just don't get my jollies from that type of behavior. I have no problem with those that may disagree with my assessment of his behavior, at all. We all are entitled to react to what we see in our own way, based upon our own sensibilities and belief of how we should treat one another. He's still a turdfest.

Instead of simply opining, I posted the video of the actual event so people can make up their own mind. I hope if they do watch the video, they watch the entire video and consider the last couple of minutes.

But saying she was "raped" is BS and an insult to any person that has truly been raped.

I am in total agreement with your comment, however, that is not what I stated.

I said that like someone who has been raped, she was traumatized.

If I say about someone, “Like a combat veteran, he is suffering from PTSD,” am I say that person is a combat veteran? No.

I’m the one with the GED. I’m amazed when I write a sentence that only requires a 5th grade comprehension level that I am forced to decipher it for someone that I would be willing to wager has a fair degree of college under their belt.

Your intent seems to be solely to make me look bad in the eyes of others. So be it. If you are not prepared to engage in honest discourse, then I cannot engage you in same. Let’s just say that I’m a bad person and leave it at that. Hopefully, that will give you what you need to claim victory. Mission accomplished.

I do not believe that a powerful ‘host,’ after inviting someone to their ‘home,’ when it is a known fact that they are ‘weak,’ demonstrates good manners or a compassionate consideration for others. I think that the only thing you have accomplished is to illuminate the fact that we have different levels of empathy.

I have nothing else to say on this matter other than I will not surrender my beliefs, regardless of how they make me look in the eyes of others.

                Cheers. - Frank

I dislike the fact that the US have turned every TV show into a reality TV show. I think most talk shows are very boring and it's the first time I hear about Letterman but it was a pretty good interview.

Usually I am bored to death during celebrity interviews but it was very funny.

By playing the foil, he actually makes her look good.... It's not humor as in hahaha humor or even tongue in cheek humor.

It was Chaplin kind of humor. Now Chaplin was never particularly funny but he knew how to play on people's heart strings by making people care about the characters and it was the juggling between comedy, tragedy and tenderness that people loved.

So good job on that one Letterman.

The woman knew she was the butt of late night show jokes on every network - because of her activities. Chances are it was the only show interested in having her on. I thought she took it pretty well.

If she wanted kid gloves and sympathy she should have been on Dr. Phil. Letterman did what he normally does - I've never found him particularly funny or entertaining.

I agree. I just watched the whole thing. It wasn't really an attack. He was joking, and she handled herself very well. She wasn't tearing up because he was attacking her. She was tearing up because she could tell that he cared about her. At least that's my take.

The only time I think he crossed the line was asking her about getting money from Charlie Sheen. But she answered it like a pro.

To me, it was some very good give and take on both sides.

He made her look great. But I think it could have gone the other way, if she wasn't prepared for him.

I don't generally watch him, but only because The Colbert Rapport is on a the same time. He's a skilled host. And so is Craig Ferguson. Some humor is pulling "funny" out of misery. Had he just been gentle and understanding...it would have been boring, and a bad interview. He actually showed empathy in going to the line...pulling back...going again..pulling back. Giving her opportunities to look good.

Letterman has a kind of humor that isn't appealing to everyone. I get that.

I've only watched Letterman a handful of times, as I've never been a fan of any late night TV shows. However, the times I did watch I always got a bad vibe from him, like he was smirking at the world and all the lowly everyday people beneath him.

I recall he liked to come up with ways to interview people in the street, making them look as stupid as possible. Of course, that's something you see all the time now but back when he started it was more cutting edge (though not necessarily in a good way). By today's standards, anything negative you could say about Letterman is very typical on reality TV, YouTube, etc. He was just one of the pioneers of this style, which to me isn't anything to be proud of.

Jeez Frank. You just made me glad that I don't watch him. I've seen headlines about how nasty he has gotten a few times, but didn't read them because..........well, because I really don't give a rat about what celebrities do.

I always preferred Letterman, even though I'm not big on late shows. Leno was never funny to me.

...the ones showing the greatest promise these days are Jimmys Fallon and Kimmel, and that's not saying much.
