LOL. I'm not German, but if I were, I'd probably tell you to 'haben sie etwas Respekt!' for a comment like that.

I'm not German. I do have German (Jewish) background on my mother's side (some day, I might look into it more deeply). Sorry about not having anything useful to say here. Your thread topic just got me thinking.

You can also check out the goethe institut. If you are lucky, there may be an office near you. Learning German, Experiencing Culture*-*Goethe-Institut*

ALSO, Check out deutsche welle. I WISH I could have seen this site as a little kid. It is GREAT for learning german! Don't forget, this assumes almost NOTHING! They have courses that would bore you silly if you were fluent, but are GREAT if you know NOTHING! They also have ones you would have a lot of trouble with if you aren't fluent. I don't know your level, SO....

    LEARN GERMAN | DW.DE

BTW Goethe institut is a worldwide good will organization setup through the german government to spread german culture and language over the world. They cater to exactly this sort of thing.

Deutsche Welle is an old established german news organization that has partnered with several agencies to provide the same sort of thing.

One word about DW. Their courses are maybe 90% HOCH DEUTSCH(standard german). The rest cover various dialects called collectively platt deutsch. So don't be surprised if some odd variants pop up.

A nice midlevel course in the form of a soap opera is:

I am from Liverpool but speak fluent German. I know, it's a bit weird. I have a fascination with the German language.

That's not weird. As far as I can discern, it might be the about only thing that isn't weird about you.
