Do you guys remember Ethan Couch?

NO?

OK, HE is the guy that decided to get drunk, drive, and kill 4 people and injure 12. To say injure is an understatement. One person is paralyzed for life.

His defense? That he was a RICH SPOILED BRAT! OK, that wouldn't go well with the courts or jury, so they gave it a name like it was some type of DISEASE! Affluenza!

Wikipedia describes it as:

Affluenza, a portmanteau of affluence and influenza, is a term used by critics of consumerism. The book Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic defines it as "a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety, and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more."[1]
The news says:

'Affluenza' Teen's Family Will Pay Over $2M to the Family of the Boy He Paralyzed

It's the first approved settlement in the civil fallout from the accident, which gained national attention for Couch's unusual "affluenza" defense. His "affluenza," his attorneys and doctors argued, given him to him by his permissive wealthy parents(RICH), imbued the teenager with a sense of irresponsibility(SPOILED) that left him unable to understand the consequences of his actions(BRAT).
The parents liability insurance paid out $1.638 Million for two liability policies which TOGETHER will pay about $3,300/month for life.

And the boy? He gets 10 years probation where he is not supposed to drink, do drugs, or drive. YEAH, THAT will work! (sarc) Besides, he'll probably just get a limo.

FURTHER, he will be in "rehab" for affluenze! WOW! I would LOVE to steal something from a store and have them say "HEY! STEVE, WE DON'T LIKE THAT! For punishment, we will get you a house in the hamptons, and give you a full entertainment center!". You want to rehabilitate him? Maybe put him in a tenement, have him get a minimum wage job that he has to walk 5 miles a day to, and have him try to repay the liability company! If his problem is being spoiled, or thinking mummy and daddy will save the day every time, or not having a consequence, THAT would help. On second thought, maybe it would be good if the tenement were in a jail. After all, what makes HIM so special?

Why don't people riot HERE? THIS is the epitome of what the occupy movement talks about with the 1%!

His family's insurance company is paying. I agree - his 'treatment' for influenza should be to live without money or influence or privilege. Like that ever happens.

Yeah maybe do the 'probation' in a wheelchair - otherwise this will go 'in one ear and out the other' since the insurance will pay out for his crime -- he will still feel he is 'entitled'.

Or maybe they could give him one of those 'scared straight' routines where they take the kids to a morgue to see all the mangled bodies that are victims of drunk drivers. Yeah - that could be the program on the weekends to punctuate doing time in a wheelchair.

    sick sick sick.

There is a very effective treatment for affluenza.

    It's called prison.

Not sure who took over Fred Bear's program for troubled youth when he died, but his idea was to take them out in the wilderness in a small group and make them survive in the middle of nowhere. Taught them survival and respect for others since they had to depend on everyone to pull their own weight to get through it. No TV, no cell phones, internet, night clubs, or designer anything. Just you and some other assholes against a very rough environment.

Absolutely crazy. Maybe OJ Simpson too should have just pleaded this and not bothered trying to hoodwink the jury?

It is stories like this that show a major problem with society today. People do NOT want to be responsible for their own actions. Understanding that your actions may have consequecnces that you will have to own up to later is vital for people to act correctly and respnsible. If a person "does something", they are the person who "did it" and therfore they are the one who are respsonsible for doing that action! It is rather simple.
It angers me when people try to pass their actions off and blame other people, their up bringing, mental state, unhappy circumstances, made up reasons, etc.
