I couldn't let this day pass without wishing a very happy birthday to one of the crew I first met when I joined here; a crew member that has turned out to be a really cool friend!

So, Happy Birthday Thom!

If weather permits, have a soul moving birthday as four wheels move the body but two wheels move the soul!

Thom is so old, that when I asked him what he thought was the best thing about being his age, he replied "No peer pressure".

Fortunately for you it's Saturday night and I have a beer to hand so now I'll stand, raise said beer and honour you Thom.

Many happy returns to you both!

You share your birthdays with Sid Vicious, Bono and Fred Astaire amongst others.

On this day: 1794 - Elizabeth, the sister of King Louis XVI, was beheaded.

On this day in 1975 Claude Whitacre completely failed to sell his first Vacuum cleaner.

Haha! Would you care to elaborate on that? Huh? Would ya?

Honestly, I had never heard of him before so I searched and found this.

Are you sure this guy is, um, er, playing with a full band? His cymbals are in full working order? He isn't a few strings short of a guitar? This is the kind of crap music the Brits used to like? I'm shocked!

The only thing in common we have is a birthday, and the only thing it explains is that May 10th was tainted when he was born and was fully pardoned and redeemed when I was born. That is my most lowly and humble opinion of course!

Thanks Birthday Buddy! I will never ever forget your birthday, I promise. The first thought that went through my head upon waking this morning was, "It's my birthday!" The second thought was, "It's Thom's birthday too!" I kid you not!

Anyway, I hope your birthday was as awesome as mine! I got all of my flowers for my gardens, hanging planters and deck potted flowers and they're gorgeous! I also got to go on a shopping spree and got a complete new spring/summer wardrobe complete with several pair of matching sandals, purses and jewelry! And yes, there's pink included in all of the above!

Sounds like you had a good day.
Mine was boring I guess (though I'm having fun).
Started out listening to Little Feat and the Band with a morning fatty. Then off to Jacks Drive in for some mini dogs and a milk shake. Back home for more Little Feat and fatties. Dinner was Chinese (Steamed Dumplings and General Tso Chicken) and now it's Jimmy Buffet time with more fatties, dreaming about the Keys.

Haha! No, I've never heard of the Sex Pistols before this. But I do know punk rock. I only know of The Ramones and Elvis Costello, though.

When I was younger, I went on a date with a guy who took me to a club where the band there was playing The Ramones and Elvis Costello tunes. It was fun even though everyone dressed kind of funny and the dancing (if you can call it that) was just jumping up and down and being crazy. It really didn't take any talent or dancing skills whatsoever, lol!

It ended there with the guy and with going to punk clubs although I still listened to the above artists occasionally.

Okay, now I'm going to go listen to my new birthday song. I'll even listen to it all the way through just for you.

                      Terra,

You probably didn't recognize slam dancing. You were likely a bit young for the concept. What you call lack of talent or dancing skill, they called freedom and lack of conformity. And there was a code to it all. I'd go in wearing my western-style boots, fringe brown leather jacket, and broad-brimmed fedora and get along famously with the people with purple mohawks and black biker leathers.

They didn't look at your clothes. They looked at you. And they rejected bullsh_t.

I had a friend back then you'd have loved. She was 4' 10", with a pink mohawk and a badass attitude.

Hey... I turned you on to Chris Young, and that worked out okay.

Covers of pop punk weren't the same as seeing the real thing, live. Even with the volume maxed, the Ramones recorded don't hold up to being there. Punk had an energy that very few genres have since.

And thanks for listening to it. Like it or hate it, it's what punk was all about.

                        Your friend sounds awesome!

What I wore that night to the club was my purple parachute pants, a black blouse under my purple suede fringe jacket, and black stelatoes. I'm pretty sure they liked me as I got asked to dance/jump a lot and accepted. I liked it. My date however, didn't. Thus, the end of him!

It certainly was like entering into a whole different world though, I must admit. It just didn't stick is all.

                        Terra,
This is my favorite Elvis Costello tune.
Doesn't suck. My favorite of his is "Watching the Detectives."

He did a pretty cool country crossover, called "Wild Horses," that you might like. The female vocalist in this is really good. I didn't know her name (Lucinda Williams) until I went to YouTube for the link. I'll be looking for more of her stuff.

                        Yeah. Elvis does covers.

Anything by the Ramones was good. Even "Sheena is a Punk Rocker." My favorite of theirs is "I Wanna be Sedated."

"Teenaged Lobotomy" is a lot of fun, too.

Thom probably remembers all of these.

True as that is, I was speaking in terms of stature, not in knowledge and wisdom.

No one wants to reach a point where they are no longer able to continue to learn new things every day especially those things we learn via experience. What a dull, drab and boring existence that would be. May we never stop growing in that aspect!

Ummm... That was kind of in line with my point, ma'am...

                                    Sheesh. Some kids' people...

That is my clue that I've had too much birthday and probably should go get some sleep. :p

I'm calling it a night, enjoy the rest of yours.

The "Dancing" is called Pogoing, like bouncing on a pogo stick. Punk was (although it had anarchistic overtones/lyrics) was a backlash against progressive rock and the rather sedentary music scene. It was supposed to be that anyone could again, form a band, learn a few chords and play and sing since quality vocals were not that importent ! It put a lot of energy into music even though most of it was crap. Songs became brash and simplistic.

It then started to get more sophisticated and diverse and when the synth finally took over as a lead instrument a whole new style of music was born so punk faded away.

Here is surely the Sex Pistols finest track. "God Save The Queen" Top of the UK charts and totally banned from any tv and radio play. Was not sympathetic to the Royal Family and establishemnt.

After that the infamous Bill Grundy interview with the Pistols. 6 o'clock news magazine program on national tv. He rather provoked them to swear and was fired because of it.

                        Terra,
                        Your friend sounds awesome!
She was. Even though she had pet rats named after Anne Rice's vampires...
It certainly was like entering into a whole different world though, I must admit. It just didn't stick is all.
Punk wasn't for everyone. I have a couple of friends who're metalheads who don't grok the connection.

They all like Johnny Cash, though. Fancy that...

                        Ian,
Here is surely the Sex Pistols finest track. "God Save The Queen"
Certainly one of. I still prefer "Anarchy in the UK," but I wouldn't argue the point with anyone who picked that one.

Strangely, "God Save the Queen" didn't get much play here...

Thanks! Thankfully, I still have my head about me. :p

OKay, now we've got to give Fred equal airtime as he is much more talented than that Vicious character!

Terra and Thom have been good friends since childhood when they used to gossip about Jesus never going to amount to anything.
