The moose, which is believed to be male, was later taken to the refuge centre...

I don't know much about moose, but is it hard to tell male from female at that age? Wouldn't a quick peek tell you?

Especially with male humans, one would think YES. Surprisingly though, as mammals go, humans are in the MINORITY!!!!

  Pluralities and names of groups CAN get pretty complicated in English. I bet if you listed 100 different types of animals, with various group types, that nobody could correctly tell you the groups of all of them.

  goose, geese, gaggle
  lion, lions, pride
  bird, birds, flock
  snake, snakes, ?
  mouse, mice,?
  moose, moose, herd But HEY: moose - Wiktionary So mooses and meese ARE fine BUT....
  
  I have seen people mention LOTS of names for a group of mice, family, plague, nest,mischief , but I think most are misapplications. For example a group of baby mice isn't a litter. A litter refers to the mice of one pregnancy. So a group of baby mice, or even adult mice , could be from several litters.
  
  And snakes spoke of nests and dens, pits, knots, tied, but again...

If ya go by the Urban dictionary, yeah!

Boy: I saw some meese the other day.
Girl: Wtf is a meese?
Boy: Meese is the plural of moose.
Girl: No. The plural of moose is moose.

Actually "moose" is treated as an invariant noun.

Only in Canada, eh!

Based on the age of the moose in the OP, I'm guessing the statutory moose laws in PA are pretty lax?

As far as I know, the wild life of wildlife is largely unregulated here. Except for penguins.

Ummm................I was just kidding people (meeses). It was a reference to an old cartoon. Seems that Jody "got it" at least.

The word "moose" is given to us via the Indians, and is both singular and plural, however, you will hear the "s" added to it now and again because people aren't always sure about variant plurals.

A group of moose is simply called a "herd".

As rarely as you will see more then one Moose at a time, a plural isn't really needed.

I've decided that with 1 or 2 only - it will be "moose".

If there are three, it will be mooose.

Sounds fair to me and down here on the coast, deciding which word to use won't be a common problem.

Around here 1 is Moose. More then one together it's "calmly walk away". Moose are solitary and you only see more then one when they are in rut or if a mother is with their young.

Good to know, though it apparently isn't that unusual. I can't say I hate meeses to pieces!
