Soldiers Fight to Save the A-10 Warthog

I figured -- wrongly -- that actual wars could, at the very least, inject some common sense into weapons development. The A-10 Warthog has long been one of the most useful aircraft in actual combat. Yet, as before Iraq/Afghanistan, it is targeted to be cut. As before, they want to replace them with convoluted all purpose new gizmos (ever heard of the absurd "Bradley Fighing Vehicle" saga? See Video Below) .So, in other words, massive amounts of capital are going into weapons systems that haven't been proven to be useful in actual combat, but the ones that are combat-proven are cut. Maybe all of this development (much of it really corrupt and bogus) may help the economy, but doesn't seem to be useful in wars.

"'The A-10 is the premier close-air support aircraft that all the ground commanders and combatant commanders want and ask for by name,' said Brian Davis, who has flown A-10s in Afghanistan and now volunteers as president of the National Guard Association of Michigan.

Statistics provided by Air Combat Command said A-10s have provided 32 percent of combat sorties in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The sorties ranged from 27,800 to 34,500 annually between 2009 and 2012. In 2013, they have reached 11,189 as of June 30.

One lesser-known mission the A-10 and its pilots perform is combat search and rescue, Davis pointed out."'

Because we are dedicating so much to the F-35.....a 'magic' plane that is years behind schedule and billions over budget.

It's another move in the direction of long distance fighting? The claim to fame of the F-35 seems to be it can see you long before you can see it.

It may be an amazing plane but we are abandoning tried and true workhorse planes to follow the A-35 which seems to be down for maintenance more than it's in the air.

I think it's a weakness that our military abandons so quickly equipment tested and proven in the field to devote itself to new, unproven technology. We need the new stuff but it needs to prove itself just like the equipment did that it replaces.

The AF higher-ups don't like flying low and slow close-in ground support, and have said as much. This is all political, not what's best for the people who have the bullets flying at them. The A10 is primarily a tank-killer, and was designed for killing Soviet tanks. As we all know, Russia is now a cuddly-warm bear, has no more tanks, and is no longer a threat.

Decisions like these aren't made by men who have been in the field and know what's needed. They're made by politicians like Secretary Hagel, the Air Force command staff, and a Joint Chiefs staff that's more concerned about CYA.

Have you (rhetorical 'you') ever seen an A10 fly and maneuver? They are just amazing.

What needs to be down is the top brass needs to listen to the soldiers doing the fighting for them more.

I was responding to Mr. Johnson's mis-statement that Mr. Hagel never served in the field.

I know and I was showing how having prior military service experience doesn't qualify you for these positions like Steve suggested. I used your post as one example and added Shinseki as another.

And as far as I'm concerned it doesn't disqualify a person either.

I didn't say that he hadn't, but I can see how it could be taken that way.

Hagel, and all the top brass, whatever they were at some point, are now politicians and conduct themselves like politicians. Their decisions, especially the current bunch's, do not appear driven by the needs of the people under their command but by political considerations.

The sad truth is, the people making the decisions don't have a clue about reality.

I read a quote years, although it was in a bussines context, it came from a military strategy.
"The General never goes to the front lines."

So, how much knowledge of what's really going on, what works, and what's needed do the people 5 levels up from General in command have? None.
Their decisions are made by arms dealers lobbyists..
