Today the IRS announced it can't provide emails from Lois Lerner to the committee investigating wrongdoing.....because it "lost" the emails.

The IRS told Congress Friday it cannot locate many of Lois Lerner's emails prior to 2011 because her computer crashed during the summer of that year.
Oh - and, wouldn't you know it, the time frame where the emails were "lost" just happens to be the exact time frame where it is claimed wrongdoing occurred.

May I suggest we take some of the data brainiacs at NSA and send them to IRS to recover the "lost" data????

I would hate to be the spokesperson who had to make this announcement today - and do so with a straight face. Unbelievable!

I expect this is what will happen to much of the VA documentation, too. It's why this information should have been SEIZED immediately by the FBI at the direction of the Justice Department.

I bet if you or I tried that excuse ... we would be in jail before we knew what happened.

Well you can't get a dept to "seize" info when it further implicates the head of that dept who is now fighting against removal (impeachment) themselves.

The heads of the dept that claims to have "lost" the emails should damned well just sit in jail until someone can get a tech there who can "find" it again. This crap has gone on too far - several admins too far. It's time to start arrests, recalls, and impeachments. Get rid of the whole Oligarchy.

Over here, when government departments "lose" stuff like this, it's usually some story like "an official had them all backed up on a couple of CD's but his briefcase was stolen on a train". (We've had two or three variations of that one, over the last few years, I think).

I guess it's a trick used by more than one govt? Definitely a trick, though.

If they lose CDs on a train, that is MULTIPLE offenses!

        Obstruction of justice.
        Tampering with an ongoing investigation.
        Perjury
Transmitting personal information without proper precautions,
        etc....

I act as an employee in a lot of cases, Employees often have SOME special protections. If I did the first three, I likely WOULD end up in jail, as well as likely other things! If I did the last 2, I WOULD be terminated and subject to any and all further penalties! In fact, in about 40% of corporate contracts I end up having to take a course that makes that ABUNDANTLY clear, LITERALLY!!!!!!!

In fact, on 20% of recent contracts, I am FORBIDDEN to send certain emails over the internet! If I DO, they ask ME, my BOSS, and HIS BOSS, for ME to explain WHY!!!!!!! If I can't give a good explanation within 2 days, they threaten to escalate it!

I have ALSO been in companies under investigation. Older records are archived and can NOT be deleted, and papers can't be shredded, and they say the same on ALL main trash bins.

So HOW does the government get off having FEWER limitations?

Nixon's second term run was the first presidential election I voted in. I remember thinking when Watergate went down how glad I was I voted for McGovern.

I was far too young to vote but I did attend a Tricky Dick speech way back in the day. I figure you may remember this map quite vividly!

Don I'm 61 and have been an avid Cannabis consumer my whole life, I'm lucky I remember Nixon, LOL.
Seriously though, back in the day I didn't follow or think about politics much. My parents where life long Democrats and up to (and including) Clinton I always voted straight D.
Since then I've voted third party.

This story just got juicier ....seems only HALF of Lerner's emails were "lost due to a glitch".

All of the internal emails to subordinates are fine - the emails "lost" are from Lerner to the outside agencies/departments such as Justice, WH, Dems in Congress, etc. That would be any email suspected of showing collusion between agencies of the govt to punish political rivals....poof!

Don't ya love how this kind of info is ONLY released on Friday afternoons - when they think no one is paying attention. I think there'll be a real stink about this one.

I haven't seen anything about this except what's been posted in this thread, but if it's as it appears, there should be a real stink about it. This is unacceptable for any administration. It won't surprise me if it's swept under the carpet though.

You would think by now that everyone can see all of the the bumps and bulges in the carpet. It's par for the course, and unfortunately it's not surprising at all.

Well, government is SUPPOSED to freely send such information, under FOIA, and they DO have rules regarding retention.

Do you think for a SECOND that if someone like MADOFF just LOST EMAIL that happened to be evidence that the government would accept this excuse? When I moved into my new place, I actually got a filiing cabinet and neatly organized TWENTY years worth of documents. No sooner had I done that did I have to get 5 year old documents to defend a stupid lawsuit! I now have 14 years of new documents, and am seriously considering moving THEM into there. YEAH, you heard right. I currently have about 34 years, about 1980-2014, worth of documents. MOST receipts of things I bought, contracts, invoices, statements. Do you REALLY think the government doesn't backup, etc?

What if they came to audit you, and you said the dog smelled dog food or meat on a receipt, hopped into the box, got trapped, and urinated on all the receipts? What if you claimed that there were some type of oil based stain nearby, and he knocked that over and they whole thing was just WIPED OUT! You now have NO receipts to present, and can't even prove you made a penny? Do you think they would just say forget about it?

The IRS is all about PAPERWORK! That is their bread and butter! You don't REALLY think they are there to simply collect the money, do you? NOPE! ONE COMPUTER could do that for the PLANET! MOST people do this all electronically now anyway. Their job is to look at PAPERWORK, spot discrepancies, and use them to harass people into paying AND, if there is a dispute, audit PAPERWORK. And they can go back three years to START!

IMAGINE! I was recently asked to pay a HUGE sum of money to the IRS. If I didn't have the paperwork to backup what I was saying, I would have to pay every penny, or go to court with nothing and let the chips fall where they may.
