Secret Service confiscates books & buttons from Ron Paul delegates - Updated
September 4th, 2008 | Breaking News, Constitutional Crisis, Minneapolis RNC, Ron Paul

By: D. H. Williams @ 7:29 PM - EST

Today at the Republican National Convention, as the Ron Paul Delegates were taking a picture in front of the model White House inside the Convention Center, they were surrounded by Secret Service which proceeded to search the bags of all the delegates. They took any and everything related to Ron Paul including signs, buttons, videos, slim jims, cards, even books.

Alternate Delegate Dennis Rothacker from Florida said “We were done taking the picture when Secret Service started walking into the room and surrounded us. There were about 30 of them. When they searched my bags they took my Ron Paul sign and turned a deaf ear to my complains, they just walked away.”

Delegate Ron Warner from Fairbanks Alaska added that as he was walking into the convention center today with about 15 Revolution Manifesto books, 20 DVD’s for Delegates, 20 Ron Paul buttons and a handful of other things, we was stopped by security which called on an obviously important higher up, who directed all the materials to be confiscated. She told him, and I quote “You can’t bring that in here, this is Mc Cain territory”

Dennis, Ron and the other delegates report being openly followed by secret service. He says that they had been monitored from the beginning of the convention, but that now they are being shadowed constantly.

There are also reports of delegates being approached by security and told that they will be summarily thrown out if they leave their assigned chair.

Updated: @ 7:37 PM - EST

The alarm was sounded at 6:07 PM - EST when a text message was hurriedly sent from the convention floor by Republican delegate Dennis Rothacker to ‘Boris in Miami’.

“We just had a group shot of all the RP delegates and alternates, the secret service came and started searching everyone and took anything RP related. We got it on video though…”

Updated @ 8:18 PM - EST

Ron Paul delegates report that they have been shadowed by Secret Service since the beginning of the Republican National Convention at the Xcel Center, following the confiscation of their political materials they are now being surveilled openly with an agent assigned to each delegate. When one of the delegates asked if they could retrieve their property after the convention they were told, “No.” not satisfied with that answer the delegate tried to follow the agent to make additional inquiries, he was told this action was causing a disturbance and a security agent was told to stay with him for the rest of the evening. For their safety the Ron Paul delegation have decided to stick together as a group while approaching the media with their story.

Updated @ 9:32 PM - EST

McCain delegates at large have approached Ron Paul delegates throughout the day in attempts to seperate them from their all important delegate credentials. Adam Weigold, delegate from Minnesota, reported he has been approached at least five times by other Republican delegates supporting McCain-Palin who asked him to borrow his pass to go the bathroom. Nathan Hanson (MN) delegate and attorney suspects this is an organized effort by the GOP establishment.

The Ron Paul delegation will be staying at the Xcel Center until the end of the nights events around 11:00 PM - EST.

Updated: @ 1:08 AM - EST

Several Republicans attending the convention have reported to Daily Newscaster mass confiscation of bumper stickers, literature and paper signs such as, “Calling the GOP back to its Roots.” The GOP has put together an organized machine of federal security forces, McCain operatives, delegates, floor monitors and other staff creating an effective political ministry.

Updated: Friday the 5th @ 10:08 AM - EST

The GOP’s left leaning wing known as the neo-conservatives are using extreme measures to put, “Country First.”

Neocon loyalist for McCain are hounding any Republican delegate known to support the conservative priniciples of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). Delegates for Ron Paul are being kept silent, if they dare approach one of the microphones it is turned off and any attempt to discuss Ron Paul results in a threat of removal from the convention floor.

        Thanks.
What I got out of all that is the Republican party sees Paul as a viable threat.
That's a good thing in my mind.
If Ron wasn't gaining support and not only speaking the truth but getting people to listen they probably wouldn't of bothered his delegates.

I figure this is about half true, unfortunately, this isn't a government financed and run operation.

A political party convention is a privately run function. Their venue, their rules.

Don't like it, here's an idea: Instead of wasting you time stuffing debate and internet polls and harassing disinterested talk show hosts, work your tail end off to ensure Ron Paul has enough votes to actually capture the nomination.

The next election is four years away, get cracking now and you just might have a chance.

That's how Lincoln did it (lost 8 different elections), that's how Nixon did it (after being stomped in 64 by Goldwater), that's how Reagan did it (lost to Ford in 1976), even John McCain did it (he lost in 2000). It's not a comspiracy, it's a process.

Floyd - when personal items of ideaology are being confiscated it is a conspiracy.

We can hope the the ensuing law suits will make major headlines ....unfortunately...the journalists at the convention are also being jailed.

A free press is supposed to be a cornerstone of our democracy. But
journalists are being arrested at the Republican National Convention in
            St. Paul, Minn.

Award winning journalist and host of "Democracy Now" Amy Goodman was
arrested by St. Paul police while covering a protest outside the
Republican National Convention. Though clearly identified as press,
Goodman was charged with "obstruction of a legal process and interference
with a 'peace officer.'" Two of her producers were arrested for "suspicion
            of felony riot."

You won't believe how upsetting this arrest was until you see it. Click

            http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=1376...1-_rBUFXx&t=12

Goodman and her producers were released last night. (An AP photographer
was also arrested and released). But the charges are still pending.

Amazingly, this story has been virtually ignored by the mainstream press.
The cable channels are providing extensive coverage of events related to
the Republican National Convention, but there has been a virtual news
blackout on the arrest of Amy Goodman and the "Democracy Now" team.

Americans deserve to know that journalists are being jailed for trying to
do their jobs. We must demand that CNN and MSNBC include this story in
            their coverage of the RNC.

when personal items of ideaology are being confiscated it is a conspiracy.
Come on, Sal. Ron Paul held his own one-day "convention" because he was not allowed to speak at the Republican convention (neither were a lot of other senators and candidates of other parties).

It's a Republican Party Convention - and Ron Paul is not a candidate for that party. They've had to escort out several people who got in and then tried to disrupt the convention with chants about their own candidates.

What would be the point of carrying so many Ron Paul "Manifestos" (which he did not personally write by the way) - except to try to distribute them to promote Paul's agenda and disrupt the convention? There is no other reason. They didn't get by with doing it - so once again it's "conspiracy" and "media conspiracy".

Maybe the real problem is that it's not acceptable to try to use another Party's convention to promote yourself...or to have your followers promote you.

              kay

Edit: About Amy Goodwin's arrest - some blogs and commenters are presenting "the other side" of the story.

Most of the estimated 10,000 people in the march were peaceful. But, according to police, a group of about 200 had fractured off and were breaking windows, slashing tires and harassing delegates.
small groups peeled off from the main rally, and that’s when things started to go bad. Road flares were thrown into garbage dumpsters, and then the fiery receptacles were pushed into position to to block traffic.

Shop windows were busted. So were police car windows. Protesters threw rocks, bottles, even garbage at the thickening rows of police in riot gear.

One group cornered members of the Connecticut Republican delegation as they were walking to a security check-point to enter the Xcel Energy Center.

“They linked arms and tried to prevent us from going in," said Heath Fahle, the state party's executive director. "They were pushing and shoving, and we were pushing back, just trying to get by."

He added: “They were grabbing at purses, at credentials, spitting on the delegates.”

One protester wrestled with 83-year-old Fred Biebel and stole his credentials. Another spit on Lila Healy, the mother of the state’s GOP party chairman, and hit her in the face.

When former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, who used to work for the CIA, stepped in front to protect her from the crowd, a bottle full of water and bleach was thrown in his face.

As the day progressed, the number of splinter protest groups grew -– and, say critics, so did the aggressiveness of law enforcement groups. Self-described medics from Portland and Illinois, in town to help with any injuries, were jailed.
This "peaceful protest" was turning into a lawless riot - damaging property of others, damaging public property and intimidating delegates entering the convention. When they do that - they lose their "rights" in my mind.

Reports from a person the scene stated that Amy Goodwin was asked three times to go to the sidewalk. She refused and then pushed past the police officers making the request - and then she was arrested.

The journalists were released within 4 hours - and the first ones with press credentials should not have been arrested unless they were contributing to the problem. However, press credentials do not give you the right to interfere with police or to disobey their orders - when you do that you are no longer an "observer".

Get used to it Kay -- they are shutting down our freedoms and all you have to do is read the legislations being made to realize that.....and they are gearing up police forces all over the US.
I said about 6 months ago the face of our protesting was changing because of the lack of response other than to hire more police. They started as "fair" atmosphere with booths and educational literature -- and the unconstitutional laws kept coming. About 6 months ago people started marching instead of holding fairs. I pointed that out in here - and now the violence is beginning. It might all be "justified" in the minds of some, but it's going to keep getting more violent as the laws keep "cracking down" on our rights. Some people are not comfortable with "free speech zones" or continual war - or the patriot act, or legalized spying, or amnesty for telecoms and laws permitting them to keep right on going.

It was a convention this time and many think it was all justified. But raiding people's homes before the convention, the gun boats in the harbor, the chain linked fences, and the 50 mil of our tax money spent on procuring 3,500 militia police and bringing in troops? If what the gov has been doing is so very justified, why do they need this kind of defense just to hold a damned convention -- and why are SO MANY protesting? If they had acted like a constitutionally run body in the first place instead of the Nazi Gestapo blacking out Ron Paul because he was not who they wanted us to elect even though WE were interested, none of that militia or that tax expenditure would have been necessary. If they weren't making laws that usurp our inalienable rights, and if they weren't leading us into WWIII, we wouldn't be having protests at all -- and if they responded to any of our demands (um...we are supposed to be their bosses) we wouldn't be facing violent rebellion now. Why are so many IRAQ veterans joining these protests? Why are delegates trying to crash conventions supporting other candidates? That's not a normal state of events, you are right about that. And when it is taxpayers that funded the damned thing in the first place - if that's the way that many feel, is it really so wrong to speak up and say so?

It is also not the first time Journalists were jailed in this country since Bush/Cheney took control. One was arrested and jailed a few years back for not telling her sources because they didn't want some of their dirty little tricks revealed...protecting the source is a necessary law if the press is to remain free. Who will speak the truth if they are endangered for doing so? It is not the only recent event where the press has had cameras confiscated, been pushed, tased, and beaten just because they didn't want us to know something. Yet this is nothing to worry about? Come on, yourself. What kind of a country targets journalists for doing their jobs?

Yes there is something wrong when people feel the need to riot in the first place - very wrong -- with the whole scenario - and we are going to see protests become more violent until our constitution is restored. Some people still care about the USA not becoming the USSA.

Sorry, but you cannot equate those stories (I've heard similar stories form the DNC as well) with the confiscation of Ron Paul material the OP is talking about.

The convention is a private venue, and the constitution doesn't exactly apply. That means you don't get much in the way of rights there.

Should churches allow atheists to protest in their pews? I don't think so.

Actually a lot of these were alternate delegates if I understood this corretly. So they did have a right to be there.
Kay's post has me completely confused because Ron Paul WAS a presidential candicate or the Repuplican Party and he most certainly had a right to be there if possible, as did his supporters.
Lets take a look at the dem convention, Hillary did not get the nonination and not only was she there, but she was allowed to give a speech.

I was at a Medical Marijuana protest in LA in March. People in wheelchairs, I had my walker, people with canes and other assistive devices. People with kids, people in suits, and the police in front of us...one guy with his hand on his gun, another with his hand on his baton.

We held signs, and were demanding health care freedom to use medicine that works for us without harassment. For our "governator" to uphold State's rights that we voted for and made law in California. The police were in riot gear, and made sure we all were aware they were armed AND ready to use them. About 200 sick people! and they had riot gear! Wow! what a threat!

Maybe I'm on the wrong band wagon. You're usually pretty good at proving me wrong...so go for it. Read up on this stuff and then let you me and Sal discuss it.

At least educate yourself, if you haven't already so that you know where this country is headed.

                  Dorothy:

I seem to remember Ron Paul getting way more media coverage than he actually deserved.

The problem he had was simple: The ballot box stuffing antics he was pulling ticked everyone off from the Left Angeles Times to Rush Limbaugh.

This backfired on him, and caused most of the coverage to be negative from all sides. The LA Times dug up stuff that tied him to racism, the Hot Air blog dug up faux paus to make his supporters look like mind numbed robots, and everyone in between got in the act as well.

This is why I get so upset at Ron Paul supporters. They made their own bed, and now are whining about having to lie in it. Instead of simply accepting their fate, and planning for 2012, they are now planning to file lawsuits. As if that will do any good.

Between school, and ACT, I've been keeping up on Ron Paul, and something like that, I would have dropped him like a hot potato. I never heard anything about what you described above. What I saw was the momentum he was gaining and the press shutting him out during the primaries.

Actually, Floyd, I'm a supporter of ANY solid, candidate who upholds the US Constitution, human rights and civil liberties. Ron Paul is a little too extreme on some points---but still a solid candidate. Which is why I was glad to see Alan Keys and Chuck Baldwin running on the Independent and Constitution Party tickets. I don't feel McCain nor Obama will make good presidents. I also know MANY people feel the same way.....so, let them know there are choices other than Elephants and Donkeys.

                    Thanks for the info!

Who can say that the police or the feds did NOT have undercover agents dressed in black breaking windows and lighting dumpsters on fire in a concerted effort to encite the otherwise peaceful protestors into acting in ways that would allow the police to legally arrest them?
Isn't this a case of believing what you want to believe and creating facts to make it so? You cannot prove a negative - but you can conjecture about it all day long.

Because people I respect here have advocated Ron Paul so often, I've looked into his agenda. I found so many disconnections that I honestly don't know why he has the support he has.

Yes, he believes the internet should not be regulated or taxed. That's good, right? Or is it? He also believes onling gambling and porn (including child porn) should not be regulated.

He wants to legalize some drugs - and allow Christian religion in schools. He has published a newsletter that has contained graphic racist and anti-Semite comments - but now says he didn't know that info was published. It was HIS newsletter, under HIS name - shouldn't he know what's in it? What kind of "administration" is that?

He wants to abolish federal taxes as much as possible - but when it comes to health care all his proposals are tax credits!

He talks about personal freedom - but is anti Roe v Wade, pro-life and anti-abortion and sees nothing strange about combining "personal freedom" with "ron paul beliefs". 73 year old Ron Paul's agenda is peppered with puritanical attitudes toward anything involving sex or gender. Somehow he justifies to his followers that he is for "freedom" while also supporting "don't ask, don't tell", favors sodomy laws, opposes same sex unions.

Paul wants to reduce Federal govt - a good idea. However, he wants to move the responsibility to State governments. Many states are in the red now and raising taxes/fees - what good is eliminating federal spending if you just move it to the state level and tax it there instead?

Asked if he thought ISP providers could be trusted (without regulation) to deliver equal access to users, Paul's answer was

"Well, quite frankly I don't understand all the details, but if you believe in the free market you try to work out a way to solve those problems through contractual arrangements, not through depending on government regulation, so yes they are difficult and like I admit, I don't understand all those problems that we face, although the point I make is I have a healthy disregard and fear of the bureaucrats doing it because once you do that, those big companies are going to regulate, they're going to be the lobbyists and the politicians that regulate the law, and I think you'll be in worse shape.
                      Well, OK - whatever!

A summary of Paul's "economic plan" reads as:

Tax Reform: Reduce the tax burden and eliminate taxes that punish investment and savings, including job-killing corporate taxes.... Spending Reform: Eliminate wasteful spending. Reduce overseas commitments. Freeze all non-defense, non-entitlement spending at current levels.... Monetary Policy Reform: Expand openness at the Federal Reserve and require the Fed to televise its meetings. Return value to our money.... Regulatory Reform: Repeal Sarbanes/Oxley regulations that push companies to seek capital outside of US markets. Stop restricting community banks from fostering local economic growth.
Looks like a bunch of goals - not a plan. Very seriously - what is it about Paul that people like so much? Is it a dream or vague plans? I see liberals praising him as a liberal - and conservatives claiming he's a true conservative. All things to all people??? Strange.

With me Kay it's pretty simple.
He believes in upholding the constitution and he believes we should get our own house in order so other countries will want to be like us and we stop shoving our way down their throats.
He is also honest enough to admit he doesn't have all the answers, but he is also smart enough to get the people that do.
I don't agree with everything he says, but for me those two points I mentioned above are what we need to do in this country and he agrees.

I also, don't agree with EVERYTHING Ron Paul says -- but I agree with MOST of it and I fully believe that we should be following the Constitution as the principle on which this country is founded. And I believe wholeheartedly in Gov staying out of corporate business. It is for people to vote for or against companies by refusing to be customers or employees of those working against our interest. IF people aren't doing that it is their own damned fault and not a reason for the Fed. Gov to step in and take over for those that don't watch their own asses. I don't want a babysitter.

As far as state taxes -- that is where taxes should be coming from, not federal income tax - which goes to paying off the interest on the debt only. You want to pay off the debt the only way to do it is to pay for the simple surface rights to your property. Another well hidden fact -- Central Bank, the FED WANT you to not know how to pay that debt off - it has been their livelyhood and control for how many decades now?
If states have to raise funds on their own, that is how it was MEANT to be -- otherwise you have the Feds coming in and stepping on state laws and developing a military industrial complex - which leads to martial law. Great alternative to state sovergnty.

People have gotten so used to crying for the Gov to step in on every little issue that we have allowed an uncontrollable, leathal monster to grow. Fix things ourselves as only a free people can do is the message of Ron Paul -- and it is the only message that will keep us free -- and when you lose that, it's pretty damned hard to get it back.

Decide who you want wiping your butt and issuing squares of toilet paper - yourself or Uncle Sam?

                            Sal,

I COMPLETELY understand you defending Ron Paul. In spite of my disagreements with him, I've been endorsing him from the beginning. However, he's not running for president....from what I am hearing from both camps. However, Chuck Baldwin has Ron Paul as Secretary of State once HE'S elected. Have you read Chuck Baldwin's platform? To date, ( to my knowledge ) Ron Paul hasn't endorsed any candidates, but Chuck Baldwin endorsed Ron Paul and they have a commercial together.

I want to back the best person for president, and that person isn't running! So, I'm going with the closest candidate to his platform:

Chuck Baldwin Live Election TV Video Radio Chat

( for all you Ron Paul supporters out there )

                            I've been looking for
The problem he had was simple: The ballot box stuffing antics he was pulling ticked everyone off from the Left Angeles Times to Rush Limbaugh.
and I didn't find it. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. What I see, is that Ron Paul ( if he were running ) is the BEST choice for President. Since he's not running.....Chuck Baldwin is an acceptable second choice.

Also, please listen to CNN tonight, Lou Dobbs is going to be covering an announcement from the Ron Paul camp. I don't know what it is, there is a lot of speculation, but nothing I can say. It's been a politically CONFUSING day--a lot is going on.

We need to back someone who can kick elephants or donkeys---who is going uphold the constitution. That person also HAS to be on the ticket. Write-in votes won't count, so we need to vote for a candidate who IS constitutionally-upholding, so that it WILL COUNT. Sal, at this point, Ron Paul isn't on the ticket....I wish he was.

                            Love you all,

A political party convention is a privately run function
OH reallly? Well exactly why were the taxpayers charged 50 million for it then? REPUBLICAN delegates were also harrassed there - via OUR financing. They want PRIVATE conventions they can just dig up the funding elsewhere than my damned pocket - I don't want that fascist freak for president, why do I have to pay for his private party?

How is it that Ron Paul was able to hold his own convention and it cost nothing to anyone that didn't damned well voluntarily donate? He had 12,000 attendies and there was only normal security at the place - no gun boats, no military police, no chained wire fence, no battle action garbed militia police --- and there was not one riot. Minneanapolis finally got embarrassed and sent over a handful of cops to stand in front of the place so McCain didn't look like such a fascist war pig in comparison - and the cops sent over stood around bored as hell.
Now THAT'S a private party -- AMERICAN fashion.

It's called security. It's also done at venues like the World Series, The NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics. Even the DNC rates this stuff anymore.

Your portion of the bill is to make sure people like Osama Bin Ladin don't turn these events into a forum for making their views known to the American people.

The only alternative is appeasement, which history shows doesn't work.
