No. I used to when i was younger when in Australia, but only for about an year and then slowly gave it up. Only took it up cos everyone else was smoking and its pretty cold down there in the winters and its the best way to chat up women :p

Wait a second.

You were in Australia and thought it was 'cold' so you took up smoking? And it's the 'best' way to chat up women? Are you sure they were women?

Yeah, while I'm freezing my nuts off in such a terribly cold place like Australia, I too make sensible decisions like taking up smoking. I only stopped because I kept having to beat the women away with a shitty stick.

I think he's trying to say that because workplaces are now smoke free, in some of them, the only way to meet your fellow employees is when you go outside for a puff.

  I can't speak for Suzanne but it's precisely the reason I stopped smoking cigarettes. In fact with the lovely blackcurrant flavour I currently have to vape today, smoke flavoured smoke doesn't do much for me at all.

I smoked once, and gave it up. I was about 7 years old. I took a puff on one of my Dad's cigarettes. I coughed, threw up...and decided to quit. It was a pretty easy decision.

I used to have the occasional cigar, and brandy, but with the new rules, (having to sit outside) l had to forget about it.

But, a bit silly trying to smoke one, and cough, occasionally.

These days l just watch other individuals have to go outside the coffee shop, etc, and brace the cold, for one of those things.

People going outside with their 3 year old's is a concern, but it is their children?

Pretty soon, smoking outside a restaurant, will be banned as well.

From what l have heard Melbourne's CBD will be a no smoking zone, apart from select areas.

In AU, it just seams that smokers are shuffled around to keep everyone happy, well, at least keep non-smokers happy!

You're certainly no fool chap. Are you still off the baccy? You best be, I like the vaping as I'm virtually down to no nicotine and I genuinely like the flavours. I know it's not harmless but it's at least a temporary and less harmful thing than smoking.

I smoked Marlboro reds for 31 years, but quit on June 30th, 2006. I just celebrated my 8th anniversary of being smoke free. My wife quit the next day, so I'm one day ahead of her.

I'll be honest, there are times when I miss it, especially if I'm stressed out, but I know that it was necessary. I'd like to be around another 25-30 years and it definitely wouldn't happen if I'd continued to smoke.

Also, the cost of cigarettes is outrageous now! We're talking $60-$70.00 per carton. We'd be spending between $400-$500.00 per month if we still smoked. Crazy!

I smoked from about age 13 to 52. I was severely hooked on cigarettes. On Friday, June 15th 2000, as my wife and I prepared for a outing surrounding a Father's Day celebration at a nearby campgrounds, I started to have difficulty breathing.

Soon, I was gasping for air, and I told the wife we need to go to the Emergency Room. I could feel myself fading fast when, I asked her to call the ambulance to come get me. I was thinking I might die at any moment. In only five minutes, an eternity when you can hardly breath, the ambulance arrived and took me off to the hospital.

For the next three days, laid on my back hooked up to a variety of machines. I received oxygen and fluids through an IV and the nurse put a catheter up my urinary track. It was an absolute horrible experience.

The doctor told me if I wanted to live, I should NOT smoke again. Quitting was the hardest thing I've done in my life. I used to wake up from dreams where I was having a cigarette. I awoke feeling guilty. Cigarettes had me by the soul and would not let me go. It took me a year to shed the cravings, the dreams, and the desire to have a smoke. I used to hang around people who smoked just so I could get a bit of second hand smoke (what craziness) .

The bottom line is that you can quit. It isn't easy. In fact, it is hard. But you can do it if you want to. It isn't all bad -- quitting that is. Besides all of the health benefits, you will stop smelling up the place, you will find that people will like you more, and you'll keep the money you would have spent on lighting up! Oh, I am still alive and going strong15 years after quitting. I have never felt better!

That is the 100% truth!!!

My friend's husband is a recovering addict - heroine. About a year before I quit smoking, I was over at their house and explained all of the trouble I was having quitting. He looked at me, touched my arm and said, 'I feel your pain. That is exactly what I went through in withdraw.'

So yeah, non-smokers don't get it. Former smokers do.

I had to quit for medical reasons and I was not happy about it. I used Chantix and that helped, until after you stop taking the pills anyway!

I made it though! It'll be six years this November, tobacco free!

Last year I started with electronics, so now I vape. No tobacco, no smell, no ashes, no hiding, and I get the ones with the very least amount of nicotine in them. The nicotine actually has less side effects and danger than the Chantix!

So happy to say that I just reached 7 months with no cigarettes and 3 months with no nicotine (from electronic cigs or patches).

If you have any doubt about how horrible this poison is, watch some of the stuff about people who have lost their teeth, or those who have lost fingers or toes. Seems silly to say it but seeing people mutilated seems to hit home more than stuff you can't really see like lung cancer, throat cancer, head and neck cancer, stomach cancer, etc. that will definitely kill you outright.

It's no joke, Yo. It will take some serious work and maybe lots of attempts -- and I recommend cutting way down before you try to quit completely - Use the crutches - nicotine patches, e-cigs, whatever works for you. Just keep getting back up on the horse if you fall off.

Thanks, ExRat! I have thought about you when I saw the various threads about smoking now that I have actually taken action to quit. I am glad you 'touched base' and to hear you are still a quitter!

I am hip to the midriff routine - you know I had always wondered whether cigarettes speed you up or slow you down since there are definite 'before or after' times when you (used to) crave a cigarette.

I know now that is definitely speed. I am not eating any more than I ever did but gained some weight when I finally quit all the way from the nicotine - I am exercising 5 of 7 days and more or less live on a diet but see that my metabolism has slowed down.

What is helping is taking kelp which is iodine and speeds up your metabolism (your thyroid) (without the sodium in iodized salt) - I think it is really working. Other things you can do to speed up metabolism are #1 cinnamon, #2 paprika but it is hard to really do enough to make a difference so the kelp capsule really works for me. (also helps protect your thyroid from radiation)... and then of course whatever exercise if you do it faster that will also speed up your metabolism

Any way - chubby or bubbly no more slow and subtle suicide.

I have no business posting in this thread, really ... but at the same time, I find myself reluctant to let this comment pass unnoticed/uncommented-on, and nobody else seems to have picked up on it.

It's kind of the opposite to Winston Churchill's reason for pretending to smoke those big cigars all the time, perhaps? (He used to keep a half-smoked one in one of the pockets of his suits, so he could quickly put it in his mouth, to "look the part", if there were any photographers about).

My father has some bizarre alleged reasons for smoking cigars, too, but I don't think altruism is among them ...

When I was a kid (and I mean a YOUNG kid) I begged my folks to let me smoke one cigarette... remember it to this day. Cured me forever!

One of the best things my parents did for me.

Stopped 10 years ago after 20 years of smoking, but got addicted to nicorette gum! Chewed that for 2 years, then managed to substitute it for normal wrigleys gum

Down to 1 pack of gum a day, but it's cheaper than ciggies and my breath smells fresh
