OFF TOPIC

Before him there was The Supremes, the Temptations and "Little Stevie" Wonder. Before them was Chubby "Lets Do the Twist" Checkers, and much of the Doo-Wop music in the 50's.

And of course, there was Jimi Hendrix.

Funny how you had to use "Michael Jackson" in the title of the
thread.

Not to say the other musicians were bad, they were awesome.

MJ is MJ.
Supremes is Supremes.
etc, etc

IMO, Great music and musicians should be remembered.

  about MJ and to get responses to find other great videos
  about him but all I get are negative responses.

  Simple solution. This is the Non-Michael Jackson thread (but it seems that's all that is being discussed in this thread anyway!)
  
  Actually Marcus except for Ash you are the only other person to mention him in this thread.
  
  I stopped watching Fox, CNN, all the mainstream national news networks because that's all they can talk about, Michael Jackson this, Michael Jackson that.
  
  Well at least some good has come out of his death.
  
  Well any hoot and as much as I hate to do it, but back on topic.
  Who do you think are some of our great American musicians or have made major contributions to American music?

  Nothings wrong really. I suppose each person would have a different list as Thom says. I guess you could make a case for all four of those, but I think three of them were known as much, or more, for being celebrities. The one I would put on my list of those four is Louis Armstrong.

  TL, though all those listed where great at what they did, it is really a perspective thing.
  If I was creating a list it would include (in no order)
  Link Wray
  Gene Krupa
  Frank Zappa
  Bob Willis
  Vassar Clements
  Hank Williams Sr.
  All of them (including the ones you listed) where pioneers and incredible influences on the American music scene.

Good list. I didn't expect Billie Holliday and Coltrane from you. They would be on my list as well, along with Dylan and Hendrix. I have others also, including some that Thom mentioned.

I guess it depends on how big of a list we're talking about. On any sized list, even if it's just one, I would put Miles Davis.

Definitely, Tim.

I have most of Coltrane, Holliday and Miles CDs and even one where Coltrane and Davis play together. I just haven't been in a mood for a while.

Yep, they are about as close to classical as I get, LOL, (although I deeply love East Indian Classical (Shankar, etc).

p.s. another one I left off of all time most favorites is Babatunde Olatunje - but then the topic was 'American' music...

No Lie? I was beginning to think I was the only one who even heard of John Lee Hooker, Mike. Only guy I can think of that ever chimed of bluezy and I still liked.

Jimi Hendrix had some influence.
So did the Stones.
And the one I don't believe has been left out..............

  I never saw him play but have been listening to his stuff for more years they I can remember.
  What started it was, I was leaving a Hot Tuna concert one night and I over heard someone say, "If you think Papa John Creach can play the fiddle, you need to hear Vassar Clements".
