Major Internet Outage?

I'm curious if anyone else is seeing a major outage this morning? Here in Texas (Austin & Dallas for sure), ShareASale is down (links down't work either), WebmasterWorld is down, webhost talk is down, AbestWeb is down, Quora is down, etc, etc. Its a huge stinking mess.

Oh, looks like ShareASale has made a twitter announcement, acknowledging affiliate links aren't working:

Yes, there are major outages around the country. Not sure what's causing it, but there is more info here...

ShareASale got themselves back online pretty quickly. I cant access the other websites in Austin (AT&T Uverse). I was able to access webmaster world by remoting into a server in Dallas. The outage is featured on their home page.

Cogent and Level 3 are having issues according to downdetector. This might be the root cause?

The internet works almost like the US airline system. The US airline system is a "hub and spoke" type system. So if you try to go quickly from NYC to tennesee, you might pass through detroit(a hub). If they close down, you are STUCK! Many THOUSANDS could be STUCK! But others might go through ohio, chicago, etc... and get through. So if a given server goes down, systems downline on that subnet could be out of service. It happens. THAT is why some companies provide multihomed service so someone could literally knock out 2 or 3 backbone carriers(there may be only like 4 such carriers in the entire US), and your system can still be accessible by others. Luckily, the chances of such an outage aren't that great. BTW it works both ways! AMAZON, for example, could be stuck in a hub and subject to a worldwide outage. I know for a fact though that they have GIGANTIC networks, and their main store is a load balanced cluster. The cluster is likely split on backbones, and they have done a lot with databases, so THEY are probably H/A with multiple gateways on multiple backbones, so they are probably about as bulletproof as anyone. But MOST could never afford all that.
