There has been much talk about Google's driverless cars, however the technology is a LONG way off becoming a reality. Here's a list of things they can't do:

- distinguish between an empty plastic bag and a rock (one can be easily driven over, the other can't);
- operate in heavy rain or snow
- detect open manholes or potholes
- operate in bright sunlight
- find their way around 99% of the U.S.

Of course these things are merely obstacles that will no doubt be overcome, but the technology is nowhere near commercialisation yet.

Regardless of the current car limitations Google tech. is still years ahead of the big automakers.

Google should team up with Tesla.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

You should see popoyez and Annbose in the labor day thread, they both think it's a thread where we all say good morning to each other!

Can you imagine if we actually had a thread to say good morning each day?

I'm glad their not rushing these things. I don't think they're going to be nearly as safe as they want us to think they are.

I agree Sal. It fascinates me the concept and I'd love to see them and try one out but I'd rather let a few people go first.

Not the same as driverless cars but my folks had one of those new Honda Civics with the low gas emissions etc, basically a very eco friendly car. Trouble was it had this fuel consumption thing that meant every time the car stopped and you took your foot off the gas, the engine turned off. It would re-start when they put there foot back on the gas.

It was fine for a while until they noticed every time they went to the car in the morning all the windows were open and inch and then after a bit longer, the engine stopped as usual at a major road in London, only this time, the engine didn't start again band there was a lot of cars behind them.

It also had a computer inside to change the air con, seat heaters and all those luxuries. I swear it would have been safer to send text messages while driving than it was to turn the radio up.

Sometimes a good old manual car like they used to be seems safer and more reliable.

The technology is very interesting though and I'll be keeping a keen eye on it.

Drawing while on a driverless car is not just awesome, it's wonderful. Now you can enjoy the scenic view.

What we really need is a car that can evade traffic jams. Not even with Google and Tesla's technology combined can solve that.

I had no idea that they couldn't do all those things, but it wasn't an idea that I would go for. In fact, I'm glad I live in an area that they wouldn't catch on like wildfire because I don't think I'd even want to be driving the same highways that they are on.

Just having a Lincoln that a lot of functions are computer controlled and seeing how that works out when the computer starts flubbing up is enough for me.
