what a disappointment

I had taped the first installment of Utopia - forget it. I watched about half of it and it reminds me of some of the worst reality shows.

Drunks, woman scantily clad (if at all) and people yelling at each other. What a disappointment.

I'm really interested in the topic, but have a strong feeling the show will be more about creating drama than it is about social experiments. I won't be watching.

When I saw the thread topic, my initial thought was that you stumbled on to the "leaked" nude photos of Claude on a pogo stick.

On topic, I considered checking out Utopia until I saw the recent promos. Ugh. I'll pass.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

      Kurt -

That's exactly what it was. Majority of the men were macho in one way or another....except the older man who was a preacher. The women were mostly the new age "hand yoga" and "let's just hug" and seemed overly anxious to be as nude as possible. Felt very contrived.

It's a shame after all the promotion. I think they had a good premise but gave in to the "gotta create conflict" of reality TV.

I watched a few minutes of it out of curiosity, as I liked the concept, and then quickly turned it off. Sadly, they picked such a bizarre group of people (clearly for drama and absurdity) that it's essentially a really bad version of Jerry Springer meets Big Brother. With a different group of people I think it could have been interesting to watch. Drama will occur organically whenever you put a group of people in a situation like that.

I watched it up to when they said one person would leave every month and be replaced.

PBS is probably the only network with the internal resolve to put out a show like this and ignore the temptation to turn it into a giant orgy.

Mostly unrelated, but probably interesting to the same market that would be interested in a serious version of Utopia:

    PBS - Frontier House

    Very interesting show.

Sounds like an Australian show from 2005 where various immigrant families had to live in conditions similar to those of the "pioneer" days.

Yep. Frontier House premiered in 2002. Supposedly, there was to be a second season, but it never got off the ground.

Whatever, do you know offhand if the series is online anywhere?

Sadly no. I've just checked YouTube to see if there are any clips from it, but that didn't give up any results either.

That sounds like some of the worst trash shown on...wait a minute...did you say "Scantily clad women"?

Well, it wouldn't be fair to comment without checking it out, I guess. You know, for science.

I'm joking, not tempted at all. Um...how scantily clad?...No! it doesn't matter.

Has anyone seen my pogo stick?

REALLY scantily clad - check it out. The seem to wake up and put on bikinis to go feed the chickens.

I just lasted 10 minutes of this second installment - and turned it off.

They make a big deal of the location but they have FIVE acres..is this an LA idea of "wide open spaces">

My son has 10 acres and it's called a "lawn" or "a yard". I can't imagine setting up a new civilization on five acres. Also they have $5k to spend so they can order in from "the outside world". I think the people who thought this show up were either drunk, high or both.
