What to charge a client (Quick question)

I have a client that emailed me requesting a Wordpress (big site with lots of content) + Flyers + Cards and asking for a price.

Should I go 2000 for everything? or Blog + Flyers and toss in the cards for free?

Or should a charge small amount on a monthly bases.
I'm looking for serious replies only please, thanks

Yup, it's a quick question. No quick or good answers can be the result.

    Define: 'big,' 'lots.' Define: "content."

Are you designing the flyer and writing the copy? Are you doing that and printing them?

    How about the cards?

How much do you want to make?
What is your time and expertise worth?
    How good are you?
What other options of making money do you have?
Do you have other hot leads?
How's your pipeline? How's your funnel?

The first thing you need to do is establish a fixed scope.

    Scope-creep is a pain.

Decide right now what the project entails.

Then, keep in mind that if you give a freebie once, they will expect a freebie every time.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

There are variables in this. Have you built a 10 page website before - for a client? do you have a portfolio already? I think in ways we know what the answer is....

You then say... the web work is a "redesign"? again another variable.. are you using the existing content and images? are you adding more?

You are wanting to discuss pricing, and as you can tell pricing deals with exacts. what are you specifically doing for the client? I nor anyone else would be able to set a price for you, but I at the very least could get you a lower - I have never done this price point to the Hey I do this all the time price point.

In regards to the flyers and Cards... as I recall from a previous post inquiry you were charging $200 for the Flyers? the cards.. you charge for those.. pretty simple, you produce something, you charge.

      Update
I had another client on the phone asking for a website & design and he wanted to do an in person meeting

I didn't want to drive to another city to do in-person consulting so I told him it would cost $50-$100 for in person and free for Skype consultation (I'd have to drive to another city 40 minutes away...cost of gas)

he just hung up on me after i said that he's not paying for my time. ugh these cheapskate clients are difficult

I bet he did. Maybe next time you will say "What time tomorrow are you available?"

especially after a potential client hangs up on you because you didn't value his time by driving to meet him.

Working with clients is interesting. when it comes to time... they hold the cards. You speak to them on their time. You meet with them on their time. A project timeline is determined most often based on the clients needs and time requirements. Communication during the project is most often dictated by the time available by the client.

You are right. But actually it is not a good thing. Most of newbie clients think that Web Designers are for free and they should be available all the time and they should not be paid more than $500 for a large website and end up complaining.

              Regards
              AB

Depends on quality you produce. IF you have awesome quality, $2000 is a steal.

A solution is to build the hassle factor cost of these in-person meetings into your regular pricing. That way the dollars are covered beforehand. If a typical trip costs you $200 and you know it takes 5 visits on average to land a client, add another $1000 onto your design price.

You can also use the Monkey's Paw approach: they pay you for the plan, and if they go ahead with you to implement it, you deduct that cost from the total investment.

As usual, these topics have been discussed before. Here is a thread from 2011 in which Chris Green shares his approach, and I share the Monkey's Paw in post #7: http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...l-clients.html

Another method, applicable to many situations, is http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...uch-again.html

Charge him $497-$997 for setup and $79-$179 for maintenance. If you're producing content monthly or doing ongoing SEO, charge even more per month.
