I just got off the phone with someone that came to a seminar I gave months ago.

His site's a mess, but that's another story.

He wanted to know why his business wasn't coming up in the search engines, and I was little puzzled that he wasn't coming up in Google Places.

I looked at his listing and his assisted living facility was listed under painting and air conditioning.

    Haha you should have stuck a bill in for £397 for that little gem of advice! Not even I've done that (I don't think). Maybe in the early days. I guess we've all said "doh" at one point.

    I did once advise a guy who actually DID have a website on painting and decorating. He was one of these people who loved the sound of his own voice, so you couldn't tell him anything. He was getting 1000 unques a day on his very simple DIY website but had no idea how to convert. I have to say I gave up in the end. Some people eh?

    I know. Most of the small businesses I work with don't blink an eye at paying four to five figures a month for traditional advertising, but they still are a little resistant to online promotion. It seems like hocus pocus to a lot of them.

    Either that, or they start getting into it but don't have enough experience to separate fact from fiction.

    I set up a site and did copywriting for someone and got them on page 1 for several keywords just with onsite optimization.

    THEN he lets a friend that is "good at web stuff" fiddle with it . . . completely wrecked my silo. Ugghh.

    Why pay me if you're going to go in afterward and mess it up?

    I like it best when they just give me a check and let me do what I want.
