Good referral to the other thread. However a way to get into this in a small way is to use something like Odesk for small tasks. The cost is a little higher, but you learn what works and the quality and timeliness of the work. I use Odesk a lot and it sure beats the aggravation. At some point I'd like to be at a place for a part time or several part timers.

Start with stuff you hate to do or is very aggravating!

Outsourcing is contracting with another company or person to do a particular function. Almost every organization outsources in some way. Typically, the function being outsourced is considered non-core to the business. An insurance company, for example, might outsource its janitorial and landscaping operations to firms that specialize in those types of work since they are not related to insurance or strategic to the business. The outside firms that are providing the outsourcing services are third-party providers, or as they are more commonly called, service providers

Outsourcing is a great idea to minimize cost and maximize profit. The only disadvantage is you do not know personally the people you are working with.

You may NOT KNOW THEM AT FIRST, but you can always get to know them if you want to.

I don't really know if I'm outsourcing abroad or local, its the quality of the work that counts, and usually - its very well done. I use Elance.

I don't use elance or odesk.

I have used digital point forums to find someone and I look at their itrader points.

I also use onlinejobs.ph to hire FT guys. I am on my second one; both were good.

Try to get one that does both graphics / coding and writes great english.

Make sure they send you a DAILY REPORT of what they did! This way, there is some accountantability when they start especially.

Look for these when subcontracting your work: accountability, timeliness, quality of work, customer service. When the company's price is too low, you usually get what you pay for.

Also, what services have you used them for?

My VA is from the Phillipines, and he's great.

My developer is from Pakistan, and he's too new to tell, but I anticipate it'll go well, and my SEO team is from India, and they're about the most organized group I've ever worked with.

I've had good and bad experiences with outsourcing.

My worst experience was actually on oDesk when I tried to hire someone and they thought they were the boss and tried to tell me what to do. Apparently they had things vice versa.

My best tip for outsourcing is this -

Unless you have the money to spend on people who charge $50+ an hour (and this really depends on what you want done), I'd recommend seeking out freelancers with talent who haven't been discovered yet.

I'd check out a site like freelanceswitch.com or ask your friends who'd they'd recommend.

The only time I'll hire someone now is if a personal friend of mine recommends them, this way I know they are good and won't waste my time and money.

Because I used that method, I was able to find a developer who is just as good as someone who charges $50-75/hour and he only charges $20/hour.

My gut says that everyone is going to have a different preference on this as most people have different quality standards and different particulars on what they judge quality by.

Personally, I rarely outsource overseas anymore.. I've just had way too many problems and WAY too much time in training people. The turnover rate for me was way to high.

So, now I outsource to local people mostly. College kids, work at home moms, etc. People that I could meet in person if i needed to.

Again, that's just how I choose to operate my business, others have had huge success with overseas workers.

I saw a statement in the main forum earlier today that kind of outlines my feelings on outsourcing now: "Cheap is too expensive!"

Meaning that cheap work often times cost more than just paying someone to do it right the first time.

My experience of outsourcing to the Phillipines is that in general you get good work for 3 to 6 months and after that the same workers start working for 2 or 3 other people and all you get is excuses.

Really not good value for money

I've been outsourcing for more than a year now and find the above happens consistently

    Just my honest view.

I guess it all depends, there are many factors to consider. For example, I used Elance once to hire someone in India, and I had a great experience - very organized, prompt and they did the work to my satisfaction for pennies on the dollar literally -

What I did was that I interviewed him over skype, and explained exactly what I needed done, and made sure that he knew that I was the one hiring and paying - so everything was clear from the beginning.

You have to be very specific on what you want them to do, how you want them to do it and what's the time frame you need the work absolutely completed.

You are the boss, you should be in control all the time, you are the one pulling the money out of your pocket - but always be courteous, remember that no matter if they are thousands of miles away from you, they're still people a not robots or slaves. As a matter of fact many of these guys overseas have very high education and degrees.

I hope this helps a bit, and good luck on your search!

    Henry

Well, lets see if you are a chinese government official, the pros to an american business outsourcing to china or india is a crippling effect on the US economy which is great for China. The con, your job could be next. Hmm.

The pros- it's easy, you get more done for less cost. Don't forget to factor in what your time is worth. I don;t have a full or part time person but for tasks I don;t want to do or will take too much time I pop onto oDesk and I usually have a few candidates within in few hours.

Definitely hiring in the Philippines is great. Try using software like Time Doctor to manage the staff and find them from odesk, vworker, forums like digital point, or job sites like onlinejobs.ph or gopinoy.com or bestjobs.ph
