Optimizing an old site

9 replies
Hi Warriors,

I just signed a new deal with a guy who runs a metal design and manufacturing company.

They've got an old corporate site that he wants optimized (on-site SEO) and then he wants a new site built just for a brand new product they're launching.

I offered to build him a brand new site for both the new product and company site because his corporate site is a few years old and it was build with a free website builder software from the webhost 1and1.com

=======
The problem
=======

The site is msdf1.com

He designed the site himself and said that they get a lot of compliments about it, so he doesn't want to change it, just wants me to do whatever I need to do to get better rankings.

My idea is to make sure each page is centered around a KW, with that KW in the title, the h1 tag and throughout the page, as well as naming that page /keyword.html. Currently his pages are /1.html, /2.html, /3.html etc

=======
The kicker
=======

Despite having almost no backlinks, the site has a PR of 1 and is actually doing pretty well in the rankings for several of his products/keywords.

There are only 6 companies in the US that provide his government certified steel products and he's usually around the first page.

I want to improve his site's structure (on page) because it needs to be done, and he's paying me for it. Then I'm going to be building links and getting him ranked higher with off page SEO.

I would like to come back and show that I made X changes on each page and once I start the off page stuff, he will see an improvement.

I think renaming his pages will help in the long run, but I don't want him to drop off the map up front or he probably won't have much confidence after that.

Do you recommend renaming all of the pages and putting in 301 redirects to pass on the PR and link juice from the old pages to new ones? (example /11.html --> /steel-design.html)

Thank you so much for your help and recommendations

    I think you'll get a lot of bang by simply cleaning out the keywords, adding titles to each page, updating the descriptions, and adding Alt tags. Adding 100 or so backlinks and I suspect your goal will be accomplished without out dealing with renaming pages and all that 301 money business!

      And do you mean adding 100 backlinks to each page with that page's keyword, or add 100 backlinks to the homepage with 5-10 backlinks per keyword

      How should one split the backlinks between homepage and other pages?

      Thanks a lot

    I think 100 backlinks to home page but be sure links are of quality and active

    I've no experience, but read tons on this subject. One thing that seems common, that I've heard from webinars hosted by Maria Gudellis and even Will Irish (see some of his WSO's), is something called the Google Dance, where significant changes, even in the right direction, can sometimes cause a high ranking website to drop way down for a few weeks, but ALWAYS come back stronger than ever. They say that it's common to advise potential clients in advance that this will mostly occur and not to panic...
    Seems nerve-racking to me, but is definitely something to think about.

    well if an old site will be optimized is quite a light task if the site had a stable pr status and traffic status. Since all you do is maintain and update your contents for more incoming visitors to visit.

    I think 100 to the home page spread out over two or three keywords will be fine. This is a pretty specialized niche which is great for you doing the SEO and the company itself. It's always easier to achieve success in a specialized niche, especially if the competition (website wise, not business wise) is weak, which I suspect they are. And yeah, it might dance around a bit but if your work is solid the site will be back stronger than before.

    You might also consider having them do a blog, either separately, or as part of the second site. Google loves new and fresh content. I'm sure your client has some tremendous info that he could share with existing and, hopefully, new customers. You could also tie it into Facebook or use other social media sites, especially Linkedin. Good luck either way!!

    Should you change page names you most definitely want to 301 redirect the old page urls to the new ones. The most important reason is that you want users to not get a 404 error or Google either.

    You have a solid plan so get to it.

    Hey Jordan
    Looks like a great local client to begin with.

    As already suggested here, if you can build backlinks and add title tags etc you should already improve the ranking of the site for specific keywords.

    Then the second site you can build from scratch and have it all set up correctly from the beginning.

    Let us know how you get on.
