Newbie wants to help a friend go online

9 replies
Hi;

I am a newbie so --- my apologies in advance if I seem at too basic a level for this forum. I have spent the last few months absorbing a HUGE amount of material for transitioning into this as my main business without actually applying any of it. As it turns out, we have a friend who would really benefit from taking her business online. She is an experienced cookbook editor working freelance with mainstream publishing companies. What immediately became obvious to me is that she could put her expertise on the Net with blog about cooking. She could use this blog, among other things, to showcase her talents. She could post articles, do cookbook reviews, make her availability known for editing and other collaborations--etc.

I have become excited about the possibility of setting all of this up for her. This would allow me to apply some of the ideas I've been learning and give me some momentum with "offline" clients---all the while helping a good friend who is super-talented but not Net-savvy.

Any guidance is welcome

    There are lots of tutorials to help you.

    Another thing you can do is set up a mobile site for her and include a QR Code for her to add to her printed matrerial.

      Hi Quentin:

      Thanks for the reply....helping this friend will be my catalyst to finally installing and learning Wordpress. It looks simple---much simpler even than Front Page or X Site Pro which I've dabbled with in the past.

      The QR code you're talking about---I'll have to do a search about that. I saw the WSO recently on this subject and it did look intriguing. But I've been on a "WSO shopping spree" for the last month so I've decided to go through a long phase of "doing" before buying more. Do the cake and not the icing

      Thanks again!

    You should consider a YouTube channel with some step by step recipe videos.
    Look for a popular recipe that a large number of people would be interested in, but may be a bit difficult to follow in text form.
    Use a few of these to link back to her blog.

    Terrific idea! After listening to this lady describe some of the subtleties of cooking, I am certain that your idea about putting some of the demos on video makes sense. You guys are great. By the time I print this thread I will probably have a complete strategy for my friend

    And if you were to meet her, you would immediately realize that this is a worthy cause. Even though we're not "foodies" , we have appreciated being exposed to a much bigger view of the possibilities of cooking through this friendship. For instance---we contributed the hambone from our Christmas ham to this fine lady and received a generous portion of the resulting split pea soup as a "commission." Wow it was good ! She has truly unusual potential for going "live" with her talent on the Net because not only is she a seasoned cookbook editor but also a good cook and generally---a multitalented person who brings a deep intellect and lots of context to everything she does. All she's missing is the toolbox to connect with the world. Hopefully that's where we come in. I am her connection to WF, for one thing

    Here's an idea...

    If she already has a business license, get her a Google Places listing set up. She doesn't have to have a physical restaurant or book store-front that people are going to come in for meals or buy books at...

    And definitely, post youtube videos and link them into her Google Places account.
