$1,000 per hour by cold calling?

I was just telling a story in another thread about how I was cold calling out of the phone book (YP) one day last year...

In that cold calling session, about 5 hours, I set several appointments, and I closed one guy on the phone, because he just wanted a small favor, and wasnt interested in any major services...

'He said I just need my files uploaded to hostgator"... So I charged him 100 dollars and we closed the deal right there.

So within 72 hours of that call session I had run all the appointments and, including this guys 100 bucks, I pulled about $1700 in business from that five hour call session.

However, little did I expect it, but this $100 guy started sending me referrals from his face book page... and I have done around 3k in business off referrals he has sent to me in the last year... I mean he has dropped business right in my lap since then and continues to.

He sent me another referral a few weeks back but I didnt have time for the gig so I referred it to one of our TMF members, and it looks like it maybe be a several thousand dollar deal for them.

Here's the point:

If you count what I closed immediately, and add the referrals this guy has sent me over the course of the year... I have made about $5,000.00 from that 5 hour call session.

Thats $1,000 per hour.

Not bad at all... I have to tell you, in that five hours I probably ran through 300 numbers (manual dialing)... and guess what?

295 of them rejected me.

Food for thought.

    John,

    Good story... great persistence.

I think a lot of folks don't see the payoff. Thanks for letting us see the bigger picture of picking up the phone.

    Cheers,

Thanks Millard. Its a good reminder for me too.

As with all success, it only goes to the people with their eyes on the prize... you start looking around for things to discourage you, you will find them, and they will choke you out of doing the right thing.

Keep your eyes on the prize and dont pay any attention to anything else.

You find whatever you are looking for.

If you are looking for a reason to stop cold calling, you will find it. If you are looking for a SALE, you will find that too.

        John,

Perfect way of saying it - i've printed that quote off in big, in my face letters and taped it to the wall above my monitor.

Very easy to forget that an overnight sucess took a good few years to become....an overnight sucess!

        Cheers for the reminder!

        Regards

          John,

I always loved the "go against the grain" approach to marketing. Cold calling is what I use now in combination with online, direct mail, and direct contact methods. Combine all these and it has to be the most economical way to market instead of all the "automated" or "silver bullet" systems out there!

Thanks for remind us all about the good "old school" way.

There is so much "marketing" you can do with a phone and computer on your desk!

Hah! Great real life experience John!

    Love that.

A lot of people are afraid of being rejected, a lot of others just don't like the feeling of calling the unknowns.

Back to those days when I was trying to get my feet wet in some MLM stuff, I was doing that as well, it wasn't fully cold calling, I would say it's a semi-cold-calling. I was calling friends that I don't contact that often, or some of them which I've just got in touch with them for once.

I got some results out of those cold calling session as well.

So yea, thanks for sharing your insightful experience.

I was just talking with Luis at TMF about how its funny that while you are working toward those little $100 - $500 deals... along the way its amazing how big deals seem to fall in your lap...

Really , when you include call backs and referrals that inevitably come... a cold call session is worth alot more than whatever business you get on the front end... most every sale has a kind of a butterfly effect...

I suppose its the laws of nature, rewarding us for doing the right thing and holding our vision.

1.66% conversion but well worth it.. that is the issue though most people are afraid to fail 98% of the time but it is in those small victories that you gain success. In life you fail a heck of a lot of more than you succeed you just have to have the gumption to continue to dust your self off and continue forging ahead.

    GREAT POST, very inspiring!!!

Great story John, determination and persistence pays off. I'm not quite at $1000 an hour (yet!) but have certainly increased the call volume and income a lot since I started last year. What I like about cold-calling is that at the end of the day, even when you've been through the wringer and feel mentally exhausted, you can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction at the new connections you've made. Not to mention feeling proud of yourself for moving your business forward. The "rejections" of the day are quickly forgotten.

That reminds me of one day in mid-December last year, near the end of a long session on the phone. I was sitting in the car, having gone almost right through the local paper classifieds and making no sales, feeling a bit frustrated. I'd made a handful of contacts but I always try to make at least one sale per session.

So it was getting dark, cold, and I'd been listening to people making excuses (real and not) for 5 or 6 hours, saying something along the lines of "yeah I'd like to but it's so close to Christmas and I need to save some money, so give me a call in Jan/Feb".

I was looking at this one little box ad, the only one I hadn't called, thinking "meh, can I be bothered to call this guy and listen to another "excuse" or shall I just call it quits and head home?". I sat for a couple of minutes and finally thought "screw it, I'm just wasting time now" and called him up. It turns out this guy had pretty much been waiting for me (or someone offering the same) to call and offer him a website + promotion. That call was worth $700 (and paid for Christmas!), plus monthly residual, for a solid little 8 page site and I got paid 50% by cheque the next day to get started.

So now that's how I try to finish each session, not necessarily with a sale as it's just not always possible, but on some sort of high note like a new contact, lead or opportunity.

Its going well. I havent given it as much energy as I had hoped to so far this year as of yet because I have a couple of liquidation deals Im closing which are fairly significant deals... also I have been working alot on the TMF (In january we jumped from 700 members to over 1100).

We have made a couple of offline sales this year though, Im gonna crank it up once I close these export deals. Giving that alot of focus particularly this week.

In even better news one of the guys I teach exports to just made his first 15k commission.

Im glad to see you are still rockin! Looks like you are making this a fulltime thing now?

While I've never done cold-calling myself, just out of preference, there's one thing about this post I wanted to comment on as a message for those considering this path.

Do not view it as making $5,000 after suffering through 295 No's...

View it as getting paid $16 for every "No" you receive!

Now the the real question is...how many No's would you be willing to hear if each one meant $16 in your bank account?

    ~Dexx

I personally never get on the phone without making a profit. Not trying sound arrogant...Just a fact. Back when I just started... there were days here and there with no progress, but the point is not to get up until there is.

      You have to demand profit.

Its not about "did the call session fail..." ?

Its more about "Did I stop calling before I got the result? Am I recognizing and taking advantage of every buying signal when Im on the phone? Am I present in the conversations, alert and aware...? Am I exuding good energy? Am I connecting with people? Am I paying attention for openings"?

If you follow all the basic principles of a call session you should be able to at least set an appointment or two, and create some profit.

      Edit:

      But Wait!

To start thinking like Dexx here...Lets say you failed for 30 days, thats roughly 150 bucks for every day you failed.

When you wish as hard as I was the day I made those calls.... you will have that income. Its truly about just having a made up mind that makes the difference. Its truly about saying, "I will not let go until I have a result".

Some say "how far do I have to go..."?

Others say: "I dont know how far I have to go, but i know Im not coming out of this room until I have the result".

The latter ones have already made up their mind... they cannot fail.

We all start with the same thing... if you have access to the warrior forum, and have a phone, you have the same things I did, and you can create business.

      Just a bit more encouragement.

The warrior forum is what taught me the internet. It was LITERALLY one of the first sites I found and I learned everything I know between here and a telemarketing sales job. Prior to this I couldnt even use a typewriter.

The stuff I read at WF is what made me WANT to learn. So proud that I can be a part of that for others now.

I can honestly say that if you ordered the internet for the purpose of expanding your financial possibilities and learning to make money from home... then you need look no further than the Warrior Forum. I really can say from experience that its all here... no matter where you are starting from.

Telemarketing is just a numbers game. You're going to fail 95%, but it's the 5% of the time that you are successful that really counts. The important thing is to exponentially expand your calling base so that your 5% success rate makes you money. 5% on 100 dials is 5 sales, but 5% on 1,000 dials is a lot of money.

You're absolutely right about this, Many times you may not even get 5%, but cold-calling is still immensely profitable as there are no advertising or huge expenses to deal with - all that is really required is your time and a phone!

The issue that many people have is that they find it hard to deal with rejection, but this can be easily resolved if they just change their mindset a little, and focus on the prize.

What an inspiring story, John. Who'd have thought that cold-calling still works so brilliantly to this day? It's a shame that more people don't try it. It's really not that hard, because you're not meeting anyone face to face, and as a result it's a lot less stressful. You'll still have to step out of your comfort zone, but it's nowhere near as difficult as many people might envision it.
