Google Places and Citations

I recently added my new business to Google Places since it is a service business, I work from home.

I do have 2 crews and trucks and I let them take them home so I put the service area I cover and hid my home address as my business. I did this as I could not use my PO box..

Anyhow as I have read about "citations" I am going to be adding my business to a bunch of these other sites as I seen talked about 4square, yelp, etc.

Do they have the same feature as Google where you are able to hide your home address? And if not and I put a different address will this hurt my citation ranking?

    Hi Nevin,

The actual address you use is not so important as making sure that the address on the Citation is exactly the same as it appears on your GP listing.

Re: hiding your home address, no not really. The purpose of doing the Citations is to have your business address seen across the internet, again matching what you have on GP listing and hopefully your website too.

    Hope that helps.

    • Hiding your address usually kills your rankings.
NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is the whole foundation of Google Places.

The other key component of Places is a map. G can't put you on the map very well
if she can't show your location.

Actually when I added my places listing with my home address but hidden I became number 1 on both desktop and mobile.

Now this is with my website built but no content yet....

My company did not even show up before and now it is spot A...

I believe things have to be optimized...but I became number 1 within 2 weeks maybe 3.

Again this is a service business lawn services, I understand about the address but no one needs to come to my office. So they can call

What I am trying to avoid is having my home address all over the place.

Google Places allowed me to hide my address as it told me not to put my PO box I use for mailings.

As far as the map they do show a map, they show my service area.

Your address MUST match your GP listing, otherwise Google will know there's a disconnect.

    Keep addresses consistent!

My address does match, however Google has given you the option to hide your address.

This makes sense for service businesses that do not have an office.

I have a Landscaping business...I let the crews take the trucks home so they have much of the equipment and trailers with them.

Other material and such are in the garage..

Google does not penalize if they are offering this option. I am telling my customers what services area I cover and I also answered a question that people or my customers do not come to my office.

I just wanted to last add that most of the people that responded either did not read every detail or really do not know what they are doing in Google Places.

Please do not offer hit and run advice

Everything must match EXACTLY, sir. NAP is not a myth. And hiding your address will not help. Fake addresses will kill, too. No hit and run here...watch the videos in my signature to get the real deal on Google places...It's free if you opt-in...
