Offline Questions That Need Answers

Hi Guys and Gals,

You know the saying 'no question is a dumb question'? Well, here it goes...

1. How do you find out who the business owner (AKA decision maker) is?

2. If you can't find the decision maker's name, how do you address an email or phone call?

3. Do you write up a contract and if so, do you write it up yourself or pay to have it written for you?

4. What if you don't have the finances to have a contract written? Anyone willing to share an example contract, omitting any private info of course?

5. How do you collect your payment? Paypal, cash, check, credit card?

6. If the business pays by check, have you ever had problems with the check bouncing when you tried to cash/deposit it? How did you handle this problem, if you have ever run across it?

I've done a little bit of looking around the forum and for some of these questions I found no answers. Other questions were answered vaguely.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice,

Ayesha

I'll answer number #1. Call the company and ask. Tell them what you are wanting to do and they will give the name of the person you need to talk to. Be kind and keep your sentences short and to the point.

Finances? It's not like you need a lawyer to write you up a simple contract. Just outline what you plan to do, and all the stipulations involved. Then you both sign on the dotted line. Don't promise more than you can actually deliver. Actually, overdelivering is much better.

If you happen to screw up, no big deal. Everybody screws up, no matter what they tell you.

    I'll try few...

    3. Contracts, I usually just write a simple Letter Of Agreement. It says I will provide "this" and client agrees to "that"....I keep this very simple. Many deals, I do not even use a Letter of Agreement - I get at least 50% deposit (sometimes it is entirely prepaid) so my risk is minimal.

    5. Almost always I am paid by check....overseas clients pay by PayPal.

    6. never had a check bounce! ..if so, I would let the client know. I'll assume it would be a mistake. He/she is probably embarrassed anyway, so I would not overreact.
    Hope that helps..

    1. How do you find out who the business owner (AKA decision maker) is? Depends on the company. If small, the only way is to get through the "gatekeeper." i.e. Call ... sometimes the website will list the president / owners.

    2. If you can't find the decision maker's name, how do you address an email or phone call? Email ... Hello, my name is ... leave out decision maker. Phone call ... may I speak to the owner or, perhaps, the marketing officer.

    3. Do you write up a contract and if so, do you write it up yourself or pay to have it written for you? Yes, I always write up a contact, especially for my celebrity clients. You can probably even find a baseline online.

    4. What if you don't have the finances to have a contract written? Anyone willing to share an example contract, omitting any private info of course? Easy to find online. I had mine done by my attorney though.

    5. How do you collect your payment? Paypal, cash, check, credit card? We accept all of the above.

    6. If the business pays by check, have you ever had problems with the check bouncing when you tried to cash/deposit it? How did you handle this problem, if you have ever run across it? No bounced checks yet ... thank goodness.
