Google Places Optimization

Hey Ive been reading this forum for a bit but this is my first post. I have not seen this spoken about before. Up to now my focus for ranking a client for google places has been to get the clients "city, category" on the first page of google places. Something occurred to me as I was searching for prospective clients, even though I live in a decent sized town (over 100,000) many of the types of business I search for start bringing in results from neighboring towns in google places. So it got me thinking that even though some of these business owners have done nothing to their places page. I am not really sure how much I could help them because there already on page one for their town with no effort. So I started searching "county, category" and "state, category" thinking results in google places for those kind of keywords might be very beneficial for clients. Does anyone know about getting these kinds of results for clients for places or has thought about it. Is anything done differently than if you were just trying to rank for the city?

    Hello Ocean1.

Unfortunately, the things are not working like that (if they were, it was not going to be called - local search) The thing is - of course for some not so competitive keywords, or for some small towns, places from the nearby towns, cities and even from a different county (in very few cases even from a different state) will appear, because this is part of the algorithm factors. One of the factors is proximity to city center, but this is only one factor (of course a very important one). So I would suggest you to stick to the "city+category" optimization, and be sure that even at the moment, some of your clients' Place Pages are appearing on page 1 for some of the small towns and villages around your city for some keywords.

Even though your potential client may be on page 1, are they in the Top 3? We know that the top 3 of search results (even the local search results) get the lion share of attention form searchers. I've had quite a bit of luck in regards to those that were in the "D" spot. Point out to them that they are not appearing in the Top 3 for searches made from their own city...and you really get their attention.
