Hi,

Can I tell if a website is mobile friendly without using a mobile device?

Best,

There are a lot of mobile emulators out there, just search for them on Google. The other thing to do is just lay your phone up against the computer screen, you'll see good enough. Frankly, the sites that are OK already will be few and far between.

      Thank you.

Went in to Emulator | dotMobi and took a screen capture of how a prospects website would look through a mobile phone.

They get to see it with their own eyes, which is way more powerful than words.

      Appreciate your help.

      Best,
      Ewen

if you are designing mobile sites for smartphones using the dotmobi emulator or ready.mobi is not going to be of any use to you as you will get false positive results,

it will rate your site on a non smartphone experience of your site - many newer source code tags are not compatible with "feature phone" browsers particular with webkit css browsers

looks at the slideshow on ready.mobi and you will see one of my mobile sites with a straight 5 rating - so if you need help meeting that criteria just ask, i designed that mobi site using joomla about 4 years ago and have been doing cooler things ever since!

also resizing your browser to be about the same size as your phone is not accurate enough - many non smart phones render code differently in particular when it comes to images and tables - quick note dont ever use tables with for mobile layouts EVER! lol

if you want access to emulate lots of different phones both smartphone and feature phones you MUST use something like: Keynote MITE

Why not use tables for mobile? What's the alternative?

Hey mate thank for that, would it be best practice to learn HTML first and move onto CSS or can someone with no coding background pickup CSS from scratch?

I always think it's handy to understand the basics of HTML you actually style your HTML with CSS they kinda go hand in hand, the more you get into it you will probably find a need to progress to php and mysql and then even perhaps stuff like Ajax and jquery

For me knowing how to format HTML lists and how to style them with CSS was an absolute must for mobile web, possibly one thing I use more than anything

Fellow warrior quintin has a mobile web design wso I haven checked it out yet but I've heard only good things about it

Am on my iPad at the hospital right now our new addition came a little earlier than expected lol when I get home let me see what resources I have

There's a site called tizag.com which I have found useful for all aspects of coding in general, good easy to follow tutorials

Lynda.com has tons of video tutorials but I just don't like that type of training just doesn't work for me

Ha ha on the laying the phone against the screen. My point was that if you hold the phone up on the screen you'll easily see what you are missing. Nope it wasn't something Billy Mays tried to pitch. They say I look like Billy when I have my beard. His was jet black, mine has gray in it ;-)
