Local Newspaper Competition

Hi Guys,

Iv just set up a new Web Design company in my local town. I've already acted on my first strategy which I want to share with you:

In the town there are 2 sign writing companies. I went to both and ordered 250 business cards.. while I was there I got talking to the owners and asked if anyone every asked for web design services... both of them said that they get asked all the time.

When I went back to collect my cards I took along with me a few of the sites I had made in a folder, along with a price list. I told them that this was THEIR price list... if they wanted to order a website on behalf of a client then thats the price they paid.. they could charge the client what they like. I suggested that they offer package deals such as Business Cards, Flyers and a Website.

The one company said they didnt have a website, so I quickly agreed to make his website for free in return for all the website work he gets - he was estatic.

I am in the process of building the site now, and the other company have already printed out leaflets with their new web deign service and will be sending them out with their invoices to existing customers - and they have now added a web design package to their offerings.

My next idea is to contact the local newspaper and put it to them that I am a new local business in the area who wants to give something back to the community - as such I will be giving away a free website to 1 local business. The competition will be simply to write to the paper and tell them why they think they need a website.

I will use this information to create marketing material as this is what the local business think they need from a website

My final idea is to approach the council. In August there is a new round of funding and every year they offer a £500 grant to local businesses to get a website. I will be getting a copy of the application forms and approaching local businesses owners and asking them if they would like a basic website for free - they just need to fill out the application form and send it of.. If successful then I will keep the £500 and make the site.. if not then the owner will have the choice of paying £300 and I will make the site.

If the owner can get the site for free then this leaves me wide open to offer upsel services such as Google Places and SEO.

I hope you guys can find some decent ideas in here and let me know if anyone puts them to use

I like the idea about approaching your local printing company. I have one in my town and I think I will use that idea.
