A QR code doesn't collect anything by itself. It can take you to a website, send a text or dial a phone number etc... so you could have one send someone to a email signup form or send a text to signup for a sms list, but you'd need to use an email or sms service to do those things.

In today's Oregonian (Portland Oregon's main street rag) they had a big article on QR codes and towards the end of the article it said 'QR codes can collect certain types of data, such as your age, location, and other stuff'. Made me go WTF?

I'd be curious if anyone else has any further insight here?

Technically, the QR code could send you a facebook "add as friend" or a "like" button... but you would still have to confirm sharing of those details just like any other Facebook Connect.

Word of advice - dont focus too much on QR codes just yet. There is still a ways to go with them as there is no set/integrated QR reader or QR Maker. Using a QR code in the first place already limits your potential customers to smartphone only users. While smartphone penetration in the USA is expected to be 85% by the end of the year that is a 300% growth in 12 months. That means many users who have never had more than a feature phone - hence another 6 months to a year before they even venture into QR Codes. That doesnt even get into the fact that there are other 2-D Barcodes that hold more info than a QR Code and could have a universal integration. I look for QR Codes to be taken over by another type of 2-D Barcode that has the ability to be universal - think laser disk vs. DVDs in the late 90s.
Depending on what you are using it for there are more effective alternatives right now. The technology behind QR Codes will definitely be very marketable soon just not yet. Even Google recently dropped their free QR Code Maker in favor of NFC (Near Field Communications). You can PM if you want some ideas and are willing to share what exactly you are trying to accomplish with the QR code. Hope this helped.

I just wanted to know if I could build a list from/through them. I also wanted to know how they functioned so I could brainstorm different ways to use them. I saw a HUGE one on the back of a public transit bus today for a real estate co. Had no direction on wth to do with it. It only asked "do you know about qr codes ?" ..I thought it was pointless w/o out some direction to downloading an app and using your phone being included in the message

A QR code on a BUS?? I don't know, but that sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me! It's one thing to scan a code while reading a newspaper or in the store, but put one on a moving target...no thanks!

Have to say that even though QR codes and readers may just be starting to get popular in the US, I don't see any reason not to use them for those that can take advantage of them. If you can only afford an ad with just enough room for a QR code I wouldn't bother, but in a store display or on an advertisement large enough to get your message out to everyone else, I think giving up a square inch for a QR could make sense and provide more info about your products/services.

Take a look at QR Stuff - QR Code Examples - Put A 2D QR Code Barcode On Nearly Anything for some ideas of what you can do with QRs, or google "QR code examples" and you'll get a number of good ideas.

      Cheers,

      Steve

Yes you can build lists with QR codes. Make sure that your QR code landing page (squeeze page) is optimized for mobile phones.

So QR Codes are ONLY for Smartphones?

That's the first I heard that.

I'll have to look into that a bit more unless someone can confirm or deny.

Combine the QR Codes with a SMS bounce back ad system. This way you cover all your basis. Those who can't read the QR Code can still send a text message and no one will have to feel left out

I had one prospective client talk about Scanlife's ability to provide QR tracking analytics:

Great tips and info, thank you everyone...@ Steve, yeah a bus it was 2.5 feet x 3 ft HUGE. Im curious to see what "event" triggers the education/interest in them by the masses. Looking to brainstorm...sticker them all over the college for deals at local restaurants ? run a contest giving them out at a event...only one (fill in the blank #) is winner..or everyone is a winner but some win more than others ?...and at the same time builds a list
does anyone know "what" brought on the popularity in other countries ? would like to be a forerunner in this...have to do some research
