When you're ranking a website to sell to a business, is there any benefit in .info vs .com?

Of course there is. The .info will usually be thought of as secondary to the .com. It's more used than something like .mobi but it's not as if it's a dominant TLD and usually of very limited scope from my experience.

I would keep away from .info, .com is the one to focus on, or .net but not .info or .me or anything like that.

.coms get higher valuation, that's pretty much a fact.

I think that .info domains are good if the content is good.
    .info are also cheaper!

      Sorry guys,

But so far every one of you who have replied to this post is completely wrong and any evidence you have to back up your position is PURELY anecdotal at best.

I rank dot info's all the time in some very competitive niches.

Matt Cutts of google has already said that there is no difference in authority between a .com and .info. I too have ranked .info without issues. It still comes down to the quality of the site, the quality of the links and the content.

Visitor perception is another story. I try to stay away from .info and .biz because they are not as popular.

Well it is possible to rank both, and i don´t think you will notice any difference..... however, when the prospects sees a .com vs .info, some will stay away from clicking the .info, so just for that reason, the .com will be better, regarding the "trustworthiness" from the buyer.

If you tell someone visit mysite.info and this time next week they are looking for your site I can almost guarantee that if they didn't bookmark it they are going to type in mysite.com

.com and .info may be the same in the eyes of the google algorithm, but in the mind of Joe user very few of them even realize that .info is a valid substitute for .com. If I told my parents over the phone to go to mysite.info they would probably type in mysite.info.com lol

In my opinion, people nowadays do clicks. They search for something in google and if they find it on first page they click it. So I don't think info is less better than com. On the other side of the road, .com is always been favorite. So I reckon, .com is popular.

While I agree that you can rank well using extensions other than .com, I have always tried to stick to .com for other reasons as well.

A good example is a site I'm building now where the company insists on using a .biz because the .com version is taken. He has his domain lettered on his work truck. Now if someone can remember the domain to type in, and they do not put the ".com" at the end, my browser automatically adds the .com and takes them to that site.

There are reasons, imo, other than seo why a .com is the right choice.

If you're building a site for a business, I'd say go for the .com. Not that it is any better SEO wise, but "the masses" tend to trust .com & .org more than .net, .info, etc.

For ranking a site, it makes no difference. For resale value, .com has more recognition and higher resale value.

.Info are usually looked at as spam that is why they are so cheap. Although they can rank in the serps it will much easier to rank with a .com. Although I do have a few pr 2 and 3 info domains. lol

They might be looked upon as spam by you and other people, but they are not looked upon as spam by an Algorithm. They are treated in the same manner as other domains and their rise and fall in the serps happens in the same way and for the same reasons as a .com.
