How to make money with custom designed QR Codes

Hi there,

I saw some people here asking "How do you make money with QR Codes?" and they wondered how to sell them to customers.
Well, of course you cannot sell a simple QR Code which you have created with 2 clicks, but you can design QR Codes in order to make them look nicer and sell this service.
Of course you have to make sure that the QR Code is still readable.
Look at the fiverr gig i have just created: daikoku: I will create a cool eye catching QR Code design for $5 on fiverr.com
Those custom designed QR Codes are great for upselling, especially if you are selling mobile websites.
You are not a designer? No problem. I can do the work for you and you can sell it to your customers.

      Nice!
Yeah, most customers want to see their logo in the QR Code of course. I hope that qr codes will become more popular soon. Most of the business owners i am talking to even don't know what a QR Code is.

i code by hand normally but have recently been developing my own mobile web site builder to speed up the process and do everything i want it to - have found a lot of automated or mobile site building scripts dont have everything i am looking for, i would say i build more web apps than actual run of the mill mobile websites, I have been involved in mobile since the days of WAP and WML sites well before dot mobi was even around - although i stepped out of the game for a little while i've always been interested in mobile and jumped back in it with both feet - this time whats cool unlike last time am not looking for investors!

right now i am doing my best to push the limits of the mobile web and think outside of the box!

i wanted this type of buzz about 5 years ago - its been a while coming but its certainly been well worth the wait!

We also use QR codes as a "foot in the door" tool. They are a great way to demonstrate the difference between a reqular website and a mobile website.

When we approach clients we have two QR codes ready - one that goes to their desktop site and the other that goes to a mock up mobile website for their business. They are a very effective selling tool.

I copied this from my business site Patty.

      What are QR Codes?

QR codes have been around for quite some time as a way to scan inventory. Now they are really coming into their own as a way for people to scan (from their mobile phones) a code that will lead to a digital location or message.

All you need is a QR code scanner. Some Smartphones have these built in, others don't. If yours doesn't you can generally download an app from your mobile phone provider and they're generally free.

You then scan the code and let that take you where it will. You'll find these codes in some restaurant menus; these allow people to view more about the dishes and even pay their bill. They're also used in shops, libraries, and car show rooms to give more information on the item.

There's countless ways you can use QR codes in your business and they're a very cool link between the offline world and the Smartphone WiFi world. Don't forget, more and more searches are happening on Smartphones as people look for service providers and products. It's a great time to utilize QR codes.

Here are a few more examples. I've done a few more since this was done which have more intricate art work. As Can said, either outsource or do them yourself. If you do do them yourself - test, test, test. I'd made some really beautiful ones and a couple of them just didn't work in the end. You have to test them with each change.

You can create the raw black and whit QR codes here QR-Code Generator Just save them and work on them in an image program.

I have recently seen a lot more companies using QR codes and I am feeling like I need to get some type of service going for Offline clients.

I am already planning to do a seminar next month where I talk about Groupon and LivingSocial along with QR codes. However, I would like to figure out what I can offer. Do you basically only offer to create and track codes for people? It doesn't seem like a significant source of income.....Is it only useful as a means to get your foot in the door?

It can be thrown in as an add-on of anything or the hook-in.

Example 1- Client want's mobile website - you suggest business cards with the link AND a fancy QR Code. In that situation I would get the mobile website done, design (or outsource the business card design with my mark-up) and design the QR code.

Example 2 - The classic small biz car sales lot. Has 20 cars in his lot. You explain that QR codes allow the lot visitors to scan the code on their smarphones and get up-to-date info on the car in question. This allows them to effectively have a lot of people on the lot without needing to attend to them all immediately. So that's 20+ fancy QR codes and one mobile website which you can update on monthly retainer....

QR's can be the beef or they can be the gravy - you choose.

this is what i did for a client recently

its ties into my qr code tracking/analytics software at qrtrack.me

it picks up peoples GPS location from their phone if they choose to disclose it - so it tells you the persons exact location, down to street level, the phone they used to scan the qr code, the amount of time they spent on the site and if they went to a specific page or not.

unlike google or bitly qr code generation - it also creates a custom url of your choice which is great for branding purposes - plus i can also change where the qr code points to without changing the design of the qr code!

How do you make this kind of qr code? I was unaware that you can design a qr code like this.

Also the one Can Tonic made is interesting...How do you make something like this to work?

Jay and Can - when you both have finished your programming Geekery this Geekette wants to know.

I'm not a programmer but I love the idea of the circles within the code. I'm already thinking of design ideas. But one question? Does this take into consideration the 30% error format or can the circles be tweaked even more? My digital crayons are itching to know. :p

Yay! QR Codes on Vehicles in Car Lots...to get More Info about a vehicle! Awesomely Appealing to Lot Owners.....due to the fact that in my State (Oregon) Car Lots are closed on Sundays and there's LOTS of traffic then....that could be "Grabbed" by a nifty "Special Discount Coupon"!....that appears on their Cell when they scan in the Code.

The "Special Discount Coupon" would appear on their Cell and "Motivate" potential buyers to COME BACK FOR A VISIT when the Lot is open.

Whala! Car Lot owners WANT "Interested" buyers! The people who show up with the "QR Code Coupon" on their cells....ARE serious about buying.

The "QR Code" can be a "Sticker" placed in the Top Corner of the windshield on the driver's side where the "Oil Change" guys put their stickers.

My thought on "What To Charge" for this WEEKLY Service would be similar to what the "Sales Sheet" guys charge. A buddy of mine had a business where he'd make up Special Sales Sheets he'd print out and stick on the rear window on the driver's side.

He got $12 per car and had a Route where he visited 8 dealerships a day and "Sticker" an "average" of 6 cars per lot....$72 per Dealership x 8 = $576 A DAY!

      He'd only work Mon thru Thurs....so he'd make $576 x 4 = $2304 AVERAGE PER WEEK!

I don't see why Dealerships would NOT be willing to pay $12 per vehicle to have their "Trades" (or even New)...."QR CODE Stickered"!

Heck! If this "service" brought in just ONE Buyer a week....it'd be totally worth every bit of a $72 investment!

In fact....the more I think about this "Vehicle QR Code Sticker Service"....the more I like it!

      So....you start off with one Dealer....then 2 then 30 a week.

In fact....I'd offer to "Sticker" ALL the "New" (meaning "New" to the lot NOT "New" as in "Brand New")...vehicles they got in each week for a "Flat Fee" of $100!....where I'd "sticker" ALL the new vehcles to the lot....at a certain day...each week!

I mean...c'mon! If I'm helping Car Lots BRING IN "SERIOUS BUYERS"...EVERY WEEK....with my "QR Code Sticker Service"....helping why shouldn't "I" make it "worth MY while"?

      So....$100 a day per Car Lot (I'm only visiting the Lot 1 Day a week) x 5 Car Lots = $500 A DAY x 4 = $2,000 A WEEK....to ME....for contacting 20 Car Lots a week...4 days a week! (The rest of the week I'm fishing or spending time with my wifee)

I mean....Hey, C'mon!....I just "Spelled Out" a GREAT "Opportunity" to make some "Serious" coin. The Used Car biz is Booming right now. Give THIS some thought!

      I AM!

Thanks for reading....I'm off to do some more research on THIS

Thanks for the link Bonn. I'm thinking with the auto dealer idea sending them to a mobile squeeze page, asking for name and mobile phone, in turn they will be texted a code number to get the discount. By doing this the dealer has a contact piont that a sales agent can followup on... "I noticed you were interested in one of our cars and wanted to followup..." If they don't return. I can't recall the statistic, but it's a short time from a prospect looking until they decide to buy, so time is everything on followup. If you just drive them to the discount coupon you (the dealer) has no followup if they don't come back in.

This also from a business model standpoint could lead to other business with the dealer, in my case working with the sales team to increase sales.

The more I think about this the more exciting it becomes. You could even have a sales team of your own, however due to the simplicity of it, I would have a non-compete, non-disclose clause with anyone I would hire.

        Great information, keep it coming.

Great idea with car dealers! we were workign with a car dealership to provide individual mobile sites forevery car on the lot --- really easy to get done with our platform. There would be a button on each site that they could click to do exactly what you were talking about --- Great stuff.

Let me know how it goes.

Out of the box they typically output a list of posts and lack a proper menu navigation system that you would normally see on a more business orientated mobile website... they also typically lack a click to call button too... they are great if your want a mobile blog but i think you will find more businesses want a functional mobile website instead of a mobile blog... ideally they should be able to have both. and also work on both smartphones and non smartphones too

on a side note i think wpnexus is for facebook fan pages and not mobile web...

      hope that makes sense

      cheers

I agree with you Jay. Most of the plugins that "mobilize" sites might make it easy but lack the main components that a mobile site needs. They need to load fast, have a clickable# like Jay mentioned, and local businesses will also want a directions link integrated with a mapping site. A true mobile site can be built very inexpensively so why try to cut corners?
