Local Keyword Research Help

I am looking to build local sites for my local business and my friends businesses. I am comfortable with wordpress, link building etc.

The one challenge is keyword research. I know if I get the keyword research wrong, I can be number one on page one and get no calls. All a huge waste of time.

I have spent the last few hours reading every thing I could find in the forum on local keywords research. Your real world experience and advice with local keyword research would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some of what I have come up with so far.

1-Use Adwords tool to get keywords and related keywords on a national scale. E.g. cosmetic Dentist. Then add local modifier to keyword. E.G. Seattle Cosmetic Dentist or Cosmetic Dentist Seattle. Don't care about search volume since keyword tools do not provide accurate information for localized keywords.

2-Use auto complete info from the search engines to see what people are searching for locally now. Don't bother about the search volume again, the results from the keyword tools are inaccurate.

Any additional clarifications on the above and what other methods are you using for local keyword research and most importantly which methods are working for you reliably without having to do too much trial and error. I am worried about building sites that rank easily but do not generate any calls.

Thanks for your responses.

    1) and 2) are okay, except dont completely discount search volume like you said at the end of #1.

Honestly, I use market samurai and google so i really nail down the keywords, but using google keyword tool gives you a good indication of whats good.

Heres a free tip: Anytime you think youve found a good keyword that will get traffic, google it without quotes and see how many google ads pop up on the top and right of the screen. if its a decent amount, it means companies are making money off these keywords.

    good luck!

If you are going to get into this game, I would highly recommend Market Samurai. It will give you daily searches plus estimated clicks if you are in the number one position, which is much different than daily searches.

You can also open an Adwords account, set-up a fake campaign, put in your keywords, put in a high max cpc (like $50), put in a high daily budget ($10000), then use geo targeting to target your geographic area. Then you don't have to put those geographic modifiers in your search. Also, check for all match types.

You can always look at the source code for top-rated sites in your subject. I don't see why more people don't advise doing that. There's also new sites coming out that help you find keywords and check them for you.

That's a terrible strategy! Most local businesses don't have a clue what search terms to optimize for. So if you optimize a site for the same keywords, you won't get good results. Proper keyword research is the first step to success!
