We are looking to develop a custom script that will send bulk SMS messages using Twilio as they seem to be the cheapest at $0.1 cent per message.

My question is...

1. What features would you want from a script like this?

2. How much would you be prepared to pay?

Why don't you just use OpenVBX to send out bulk SMS to lists? Its free.

With the free version of OpenVBX you are forced to use a 10 digit phone number to send messages with the free version rather than a shortcode. You have to pay premium prices for use of their shortcodes, or a lot of money to purchase your own.

      The difference is this:

Paid SMS service: "Text the word Football to 46522 to receive a coupon for a free order of onion rings"

OpenVBX Free: "Text the word Football to 602-555-1212 to receive a coupon for a free order of onion rings"

Customers are hesitant to text to those long numbers, not to mention that they are harder to remember if the person is mobile.

It is a tough call. Shared short codes are a pain, the prime keywords go fast. Short codes cost a bundle, $500 for random and $1,000 a month for custom. Twilio (which OpenVBX uses) doubles those prices.

The advantage of the long codes is you can basically use any keyword you want as the numbers are so cheap. If you did a gig for a pizza chain every store can have their own code pizza and a separate number. You can't do that with a short code!

Also, the text code and phone number are then the same, kind of neat in that regard.

Lastly, for on the go displays like an outdoor billboard then a short code makes a lot more sense. Sitting in the restaurant, then not so a big deal to enter 10 digits instead of 5.

you dont have the voice capabilities with short codes that you do with longcodes - that in itself if marketed properly is a winner right there...
