Do you want to accept checks written to your business name? You'll need one to open a bank account in your business name.

I think it would be more professional to have them written to my business name. Has anyone ran into any problems with potential clients that only want to do business with those who have a registerd business rather than operating under their name alone?

I am starting my offline business and literally registered my DBA yesterday ($26.00)

You will also need a business license in your city, which is $150.00. I believe the benefit is you get a lot of deductions but than again you get charged business tax which is a lot..

I would like to hear the benefits of the DBA if there is one I just know you can take payments using your biz name as already mentioned.

    Jimi b,

You need to take your business seriously, (not saying you don't).

This means creating a real business entity, this can be an LLC, Business Trust, or a Corporation.

Just like what Rus sells says, you need to create a real business entity since clients/customers are surely will be checking on that. And as for you as a consultant, it does matter since it will add to your credentials and at the same time, will be read by your clients and is an advantage to your case.

It is better to study the nature of your business and its working requirement. It can benefit you a lot.

    Two issues: Legal and image.

From an image perspective, you will always get a better reception from potential customers if you are a "legitimate" business.

From a legal perspective, it depends on your jurisdiction. You just need to inquire. In some areas, there's a fee, in some there's not, in some you also need a business operating license, in some you don't. A quick check with the bureau-rats in your area will tell you what you need to know and how to get it done.
